• Delta Police Accused of Extortion and Harassment After SaharaReporters Exposé on New Year’s Eve Arrests

The Delta State Police Command is under scrutiny for alleged harassment, intimidation, and extortion following a SaharaReporters report exposing arbitrary arrests on New Year’s Eve in Asaba. Sources revealed that police operatives arrested over 40 individuals, including churchgoers attending crossover night services, allegedly demanding ₦150,000 to ₦200,000 for bail.

The situation escalated when police reportedly rearrested a worshipper, Benjamin Eboka, after he was initially released, accusing him of leaking information to the media. Eyewitnesses described assaults, tear gas deployment, and wrongful detentions, highlighting claims of deep-rooted corruption within the Delta State Police.

The arrests were reportedly orchestrated by DCP Adejobi Olumuyiwa, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, with many victims alleging extortion and abuse of power. Affected individuals include members of the Federal Road Safety Corps, traditional rulers, and innocent worshippers, raising concerns about human rights violations.

SaharaReporters’ investigation paints a picture of a pattern of abuse, where officers allegedly label innocent citizens as hoodlums while extorting them and denying due process. Legal experts and victims have called for urgent government intervention and accountability measures within the police command.

This story underscores ongoing issues of police misconduct in Nigeria, highlighting the need for transparent policing, protection of citizens’ rights, and institutional reforms to prevent arbitrary detentions and extortion.

  • Delta Police Rearrest, Detain Church Worshipper Granted Bail After Alleged ₦200,000 Extortion Under DCP Adejobi Olumuyiwa’s Watch in Asaba

The Delta State Police Command has reportedly rearrested and detained a church worshipper who was earlier granted bail after being among dozens of people randomly arrested on New Year’s Eve in Asaba. The operation, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Adejobi Olumuyiwa, targeted more than 40 individuals, many of whom were worshippers attending or returning from crossover night church services across different parts of the state capital.

According to police sources, the suspects—arrested at locations including Inter-Bau Roundabout and Direct Labour Agency (DLA) Road—were later handed over to the Eagle Net unit. While the police described them as “hoodlums” involved in violent conduct, multiple detainees told SaharaReporters that they were innocent worshippers who were allegedly framed and extorted before being released on bail. Some claimed they were forced to pay between ₦150,000 and ₦200,000 to secure their freedom.

One of those rearrested, Benjamin Eboka, a staff member of the Delta State Fire Service, was reportedly invited back to the command under the pretext of retrieving his impounded vehicle, only to be detained again. Sources said he was accused of leaking details of the alleged extortion to the media, even though he denied speaking to any journalist. His arrest, they alleged, was ordered by the DCP Operations.

Eboka had originally been arrested alongside friends while driving to a church service on DLA Road. As of the time of reporting, he remained in custody, sparking renewed allegations of intimidation, abuse of power, and corruption within the command. The incident has prompted calls for the Commissioner of Police to intervene, investigate the alleged extortion, and ensure the unconditional release of the detained worshipper, as concerns grow over police conduct and the treatment of innocent citizens in Delta State.

  • Court Denies Bail to Bauchi State Finance Commissioner Yakubu Adamu and Three Others Over Alleged Terrorism Financing, Money Laundering Charges

The Federal High Court in Abuja has denied bail to Bauchi State Commissioner for Finance, Yakubu Adamu, and three co-defendants arraigned by the EFCC over alleged terrorism financing and money laundering. Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the ruling on January 5, 2026, remanding the accused at Kuje Correctional Centre pending trial.

The defendants, including Balarabe Abdullahi Ilelah, Aminu Mohammed Bose, and Kabiru Yahaya Mohammed, face ten-count charges involving conspiracy, conversion of public funds, and alleged financing of terrorist activities. One of the counts alleges that Adamu received USD 6,950,000 in cash outside financial institutions, while another claims USD 2,300,000 was provided to support terrorist activities connected to Bello Bodejo.

All defendants pleaded “not guilty” to the charges. The EFCC has linked the offences to acts committed between January and May 2024, citing contraventions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

  • From Church To Cell: Delta Police Accused Of Random Crossover Night Arrests, Assault And ₦200,000 Extortion Of Worshippers In Asaba

Worshippers arrested during crossover night celebrations in Asaba, Delta State, have accused the Delta State Police Command of carrying out random arrests, physical assault and extorting between ₦150,000 and ₦200,000 before granting bail. The arrests reportedly occurred on New Year’s Eve at multiple locations, including Inter-Bau Roundabout and Direct Labour Agency (DLA) Road, and affected over 40 people, many of whom were attending or returning from church services.

Although the police described the arrested individuals as “hoodlums” involved in violent conduct, several victims told SaharaReporters that they were innocent worshippers who were rounded up without cause, detained at the state police headquarters and allegedly framed. Some suspects said they were only released after paying large sums of money for bail, which is legally free.

Victims and witnesses accused officers under the leadership of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Adejobi Olumuyiwa, of abusing power and violating human rights. A Federal Road Safety Corps officer and a lawyer both confirmed incidents of extortion, while another victim narrated how police allegedly assaulted her and broke her tooth during the arrest of her brother.

Police insiders also criticised the DCP’s operational style, alleging repeated mass arrests and disregard for due process. Efforts to get official responses were unsuccessful, as the outgoing and incoming commissioners of police distanced themselves from the incident, while the police spokesperson said the matter involved his superiors. The allegations have renewed public outrage over police brutality, extortion and abuse of authority in Nigeria.

  • APC Slams Promoters Of Christian Genocide Claims In Nigeria.

The Lagos Chapter of the All Progressives Congress has described the members of the opposition political party as “politically-frustrated loudspeakers” for their supposed involvement in President Trump’s recent declaration of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern.”

This was disclosed in a statement signed by Seye Oladejo, the chapter’s spokesperson, obtained by TVC on Sunday.

According to the statement, the chapter condemns individuals or groups who amplify the voice or statement encouraging foreign military intervention, describing them as “traitors to the flag and enemies of the Republic.”

The statement reads, “The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is compelled to address a dangerous and disgraceful trend perpetuated by a faction of politically-frustrated loudspeakers who believe that because they failed woefully at the ballot box, Nigeria must burn for their ego to breathe.

“To even daydream about a United States invasion of Nigeria is not only delusional – it is the height of treachery and emotional bankruptcy. This is what happens when desperation meets intellectual emptiness: people begin to flirt with national suicide.”

  • Court orders two Nigerian universities to halt admission process.

In her ruling, Justice Segun-Bello asked all parties to maintain the status quo as regards the admission processes, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

A Federal High Court in Enugu has directed the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, and the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, to halt all admission processes arising from the recently concluded Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) conducted by both universities.

Justice Mabel Segun-Bello delivered the ruling on Tuesday, following a motion ‘ex parte’ filed by five candidates, suing for themselves and “on behalf of all other affected candidates of the 2025 UNILAG and OAU Post-UTME.”

The candidates are Chibuzor Succes, Zainab Oyeleye, Adedeji Samuel, Monsura Aduragbemi and Bassey Nsikak. They are represented by F.K. Nnadi and Co., an Enugu-based law firm.

Also added as a defendant in the suit is the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), where the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) used for offering admissions is domiciled.

The spokesperson for OAU, Abiodun Olarewaju, said the university is aware of the ruling but has not studied it as a result of the public holiday.

Mr Olarewaju said the university will look into the ruling and make its position known.

“After the university deliberates on this issue, we will come out with our own position,” he told our reporter in a telephone interview on Wednesday.

Efforts to reach UNILAG spokesperson, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem were unsuccessful, as her phone line was unreachable and a text message inquiry went unanswered.

  • Muyiwa Adejobi: A Symbol Of Arrogance Of Power! – By Tope Temokun

Former Police PRO Muyiwa Adejobi has been accused of ordering the violent snatching of activist Omoyele Sowore’s Ray-Ban glasses during a protest — an act that critics say goes beyond petty misconduct to highlight the deep culture of impunity in the Nigerian Police Force.

As lawyer and rights activist Tope Temokun argues, Adejobi’s alleged actions reflect a reckless abuse of office, contempt for citizens’ rights, and misuse of state power. The Nigerian Constitution guarantees human dignity and protection of property, yet such violations persist under the cover of uniform and authority.

Temokun stresses that this is not about sunglasses, but about the principle that no officer is above the law. The role of a police spokesperson should build trust, not instill fear. Allowing such abuses to pass without accountability only entrenches tyranny.

He concludes that Adejobi’s record must not be forgotten, and that the wheels of justice must one day hold him to account. For Nigeria to progress, law enforcement must be subject to the very laws it enforces.

The Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, has been named the new Force Public Relations Officer, replacing DCP Muyiwa Adejobi, SaharaReporters has learned.

Adejobi, who is redeployed to the Delta State Command, leaves behind a controversial tenure marked by allegations of shielding police abuses, repressing dissent, and personal scandals. Despite criticism, he was controversially promoted to Assistant Commissioner of Police.

  • APC Lagos Dismisses Speculations on Jonathan’s Possible 2027 Comeback

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to growing speculation that former President Goodluck Jonathan may contest the 2027 presidential election, describing his political relevance as uncertain in today’s Nigeria.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Jonathan — who lost his re-election bid in 2015 to the late President Muhammadu Buhari — is being urged by some of his supporters to return to the race.

In a statement on Friday, the APC Lagos spokesperson, Mr. Seye Oladejo, said while Jonathan’s peaceful handover of power in 2015 earned him widespread respect, Nigeria has since moved beyond the politics of “sentiment, nostalgia, and symbolism.”

“The challenges of today and tomorrow require bold, capable, and forward-thinking leadership — not a return to the comfort of a past that was far from perfect. Let it be clear: good luck alone is not a governance strategy,” Oladejo stated.

He argued that Jonathan’s administration (2010–2015) left behind deep structural problems, including corruption, insecurity, and economic stagnation. He cautioned Nigerians against viewing the period through “rose-tinted glasses,” stressing that emotion cannot drive economic reform, and sentimentality will not fix insecurity, unemployment, or the power sector.

Oladejo also pointed out the constitutional and political complications of a possible Jonathan candidacy, noting that having already served more than one term, any attempt to return could spark legal battles and political instability.

He further highlighted Jonathan’s “flirtation with the APC” and absence from the PDP’s rebuilding process, saying such moves raise doubts about his political clarity and loyalty.

The Lagos APC insisted that the party is committed to progressive reforms and fresh leadership that reflects the aspirations of Nigeria’s youthful population.

“The future of Nigeria does not lie in recycled leadership but in visionary governance rooted in integrity, innovation, and resilience,” Oladejo said.

While acknowledging Jonathan as a respected elder statesman whose legacy of peaceful democratic transition is secure, the APC urged Nigerians to prioritize capable and transformative leadership over “emotional shortcuts” as the 2027 elections approach.

  • Lagos APC Fires Back at Peter Obi Over ‘Killing Field’ Remark

The Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly condemned Labour Party’s Peter Obi for describing Nigeria as a “killing field” under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.

APC Spokesman Mogaji Seye Oladejo dismissed Obi’s claim as “a disgraceful distortion,” insisting that Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda has delivered major victories against terrorists, bandits, and oil thieves.

From over 9,400 terrorists neutralised to billions in stolen crude oil recovered, the APC says Nigeria’s Armed Forces have recorded tangible successes in restoring national security.

Oladejo urged Obi to “acknowledge progress or stop playing politics with people’s lives.”

The Nigeria Police Force, in an operation executed through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) Abuja, has successfully repatriated a high-profile fugitive, Mr. Dai Qisheng, to the People’s Republic of China.

Naija News reports that this was disclosed in a statement on Sunday signed by Force Spokesperson, DCP Muyiwa Adejobi.

This decisive action, carried out in collaboration with INTERPOL NCB Beijing and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria, underscores the Force’s unyielding commitment to its fight against transnational organized crime.

Dai Qisheng, a notorious gang leader wanted in Guizhou Province, China, for orchestrating and leading violent organized crimes, fled his home country in 2024 after a warrant for his arrest was issued by the Public Security Bureau of Zhijin County.

Following his arrest, the fugitive was repatriated on 15th August, 2025 to Beijing under the established framework of police-to-police cooperation, coordinated by INTERPOL.

The statement added: “This operation not only reaffirms the Nigeria Police Force’s resolve to ensure that no fugitive finds a safe haven within Nigeria but also reflects the strength of international partnerships in addressing the increasingly complex threats of global crime networks.

“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun Ph.D, NPM has reassured of the Nigeria Police Forces commitment to continuously improve on international alliances, leveraging intelligence-sharing and operational collaboration to ensure that borders never become barriers to justice.

“He emphasized that the arrest and repatriation of Dai Qisheng is a clear message to criminals worldwide that the Federal Republic of Nigeria will not be a hiding place for fugitives.”
