Police Defend Sowore Arrest Over Forgery, Cyberstalking Allegations; Deny Torture Claims
The Nigeria Police Force says activist Omoyele Sowore’s recent arrest was based on “credible” allegations of forgery, cyberstalking, and other offences, insisting his detention was lawful and within constitutional limits.
Force PRO DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi denied torture claims, stating the bandage seen on Sowore’s arm was his own and predated the arrest. Police said he twice declined independent medical checks and that his remand was backed by a valid court order.
Sowore, released Friday evening, accused the police and IGP of unlawful conduct but thanked supporters. His detention drew condemnation from Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, the NLC, and Amnesty International, who called the charges “bogus” and politically motivated.
