  • BREAKING: Super Eagles Threaten AFCON Boycott Over Unpaid Bonuses
    January 7, 2026 – Sports / Nigeria

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have threatened to boycott their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match against Algeria in Marrakech due to unpaid winning bonuses from previous games.

Journalists on the ground in Morocco, including Adepoju Tobi Samuel and BBC’s Olúwashínà Okeleji, reported that players and coaching staff have yet to receive win bonuses from four matches (against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Mozambique). The squad has stated they will not train or travel for the Algeria fixture until the payments are made.

This is not the first time the team has raised issues over unpaid entitlements; in November, they had also threatened to boycott a World Cup qualifier against Gabon over the same concerns. Attempts to get a response from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have so far been unsuccessful.

The players emphasized their commitment to the competition but drew a firm line over the unsettled payments.

  • AFCON 2025: Primate Ayodele Defends Controversial Prophecy on Ademola Lookman After Super Eagles Star Shines

Primate Babatunde Elijah Ayodele, founder of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, has responded to widespread criticism over his prophecy concerning Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The cleric claimed his statement was misinterpreted, stressing that he was referring to Lookman’s overall impact in the tournament, not a single match. His comments came after Lookman delivered an outstanding performance against Tunisia, earning the Man of the Match award and helping Nigeria secure qualification for the knockout stage with a dramatic 3–2 win. Despite the backlash, Primate Ayodele insisted his prophecy remains valid and urged critics to wait until the tournament concludes before passing judgment.

  • Ex-Super Eagles Star Criticises Eric Chelle Over 54-Man Provisional Squad for AFCON 2025

Former Super Eagles striker Abubakar Balarabe has condemned coach Eric Chelle for inviting 54 players to camp ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, describing the list as unnecessary and wasteful. With CAF’s deadline only six days away, Balarabe argued that Chelle already knows his final squad and should have limited the provisional list to about 30 players. Sports journalist Clement Oloruntoba also insisted that Chelle must win AFCON 2025 to redeem himself after Nigeria missed out on the 2026 World Cup. The Super Eagles, drawn in Group C with Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda, are targeting their fourth continental title as preparations intensify.

  • Mass Deportation: Nigeria deports over 50 foreigners for internet fraud, others.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has deported 51 foreign nationals convicted of cyber-terrorism, internet fraud, and related financial crimes back to their home countries, marking the completion of a large-scale repatriation exercise that involved a total of 192 convicts.

According to official sources, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) coordinated the deportations in collaboration with the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), in line with court directives and immigration protocols.

The deported convicts include citizens of China, the Philippines, Tunisia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Timor-Leste. They were expelled in coordinated phases between August and mid-October 2025, following their conviction by the Federal High Court in Lagos on charges bordering on cybercrime, money laundering, and Ponzi scheme operations.

The crackdown originated from a major sting operation conducted by the EFCC on December 10, 2024, at Oyin Jolayemi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, which led to the arrest of 759 suspects.

The first batch of 42 convicts primarily Chinese and Filipino nationals was deported on August 15, 2025, while the final group of 51, including 50 Chinese citizens and one Tunisian, was repatriated on October 16, 2025.

Investigations revealed that the convicts were part of a sophisticated cybercrime and Ponzi network operating under Genting International Co. Limited, where they allegedly trained recruits and managed fraudulent digital platforms targeting victims both locally and abroad.

The deportation, authorities said, brings the multi-agency cybercrime crackdown to a decisive close and reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to fighting transnational digital fraud and financial crimes.

  • Tunisian Man Sentenced to Death Over Facebook Posts Criticising President.

A Tunisian court has sentenced a 56-year-old man to death for allegedly insulting President Kais Saied and undermining state security through Facebook posts, his lawyer and the Tunisian League for Human Rights confirmed on Friday.

The ruling has been described as unprecedented in the North African country, where restrictions on free speech have tightened since Saied assumed sweeping powers in 2021.

The defendant, Saber Chouchane, a day labourer with limited education, was arrested last year after publishing online criticism of the president.

His lawyer, Oussama Bouthalja, said: “The judge in the Nabeul court sentenced the man to death over Facebook posts. It is a shocking and unprecedented ruling.” He added that an appeal has already been lodged.

Although Tunisian courts occasionally issue death sentences, the country has not carried out an execution in more than three decades.

Chouchane’s brother, Jamal, expressed disbelief, telling Reuters: “We can’t believe it. We are a family suffering from poverty, and now oppression and injustice have been added to poverty.”

The judgement has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with activists and citizens accusing authorities of attempting to silence critics through fear. Observers warn the ruling could intensify political tensions and further erode freedom of expression.

Since dissolving parliament and ruling by decree, Saied has faced mounting criticism from rights groups and opposition leaders, many of whom are imprisoned on various charges after being labelled “traitors” by the president.

The latest exercise, carried out on Thursday, raises the total number of convicted foreigners repatriated to 102 since August 15, 2025.

They were among 192 foreign nationals arrested in Lagos during a sting operation targeting one of Nigeria’s largest foreign-led cybercrime syndicates. • 52-Year-Old British Woman Alleges Sexual Assault by Parasail Operator in Tunisia.

A UK woman claims she was sexually assaulted while parasailing during a holiday in Tunisia. Michelle Wilson, 52, recounted the dist¥rbing incident that took place off the coast of Sousse, where she was strapped into a harness with a parasail operator.

“He was pulling at the back of my bikini bottoms, tugging the strap,” Ms. Wilson told The New York Post. “It seemed like he was adjusting the harness to pull me closer.”

Ms. Wilson had planned to parasail alongside a friend, but staff informed them that due to windy conditions, they would need to go separately, each accompanied by an operator. Her friend’s ride went smoothly without incident.

Describing the operator as a man in his twenties, Ms. Wilson said, “His legs were wrapped around me. One hand was on the parachute, but the other was free. Then I felt him touching my leg"

She added, “He was gr%ping me, pressing himself against me, and speaking in Arabic. I kept trying to lean forward to get away. I felt vi%lated, sc@red, and disg¥sted.”

Back on the ground, a shaken Ms. Wilson immediately reported the incident to local authorities. “You might expect some light-hearted comments from men in places like this, but this wasn’t that—it was s+xual a+sault,” she stated.

Ms. Wilson was vacationing with her 17-year-old daughter, her friend, and her 16-year-old twin sons on a trip costing approximately $8,000. She believes the operator has been detained.

British officials and her insurance provider are supporting the investigation, and EasyJet, the travel company through which she booked the trip, is looking into the matter. The ordeal has left Ms. Wilson’s holiday in ruins.

In a bold move to recalibrate global trade, U.S. President Donald Trump has officially imposed 15% import tariffs on Nigeria and several African nations, effective August 1.

The sweeping tariffs — under the Executive Order "Further Modifying the Reciprocal Tariff Rates" — also target Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, Malawi, Madagascar, Uganda, Mozambique, Mauritius, and Lesotho.

South Africa and Libya face even steeper tariffs of 30%, while Tunisia will pay 25%. Outside Africa, countries like India (25%), Japan (15%), and the UK (10%) are also included.

    > This marks the second round of tariffs on Nigeria this year, following an earlier 14% hike in April.

  • NIGERIA'S SUPER FALCON BEATS TUNISIA TO KICKSTART WAFCON CAMPAIGN.

Super Falcons of Nigeria on Sunday beat Tunisia 3-0 in their opening match of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco.

The Super Falcons would open the scoring in the 3rd minute as a well-delivered free kick from Rinsola Babajide found Asisat Oshoala, who headed in the ball to give Nigeria the lead.

Justine Madugu’s charges kept up the pressure and were duly rewarded in the 45th minute of the first half, as Babajide, who provided the assist for the first goal, turned goal scorer as she beat the Tunisian goalkeeper for the second.

She pulled out a Diogo Jota’s trademark celebration, paying tribute to the Liverpool star, who sadly passed away last Thursday alongside his brother, Andre Silva.

Super Falcons had chances to put the game to bed, but couldn’t convert, and returnee Ashleigh Plumptre tried her luck with a floating strike from distance, but the Tunisian goalkeeper managed to tip the ball over the bar.

The continued pressure paid off for the Falcons as in the 80th minute, with Chinwendu Ihezuo finding the bottom corner with a composed left-footed finish to complete the routing.

The Super Falcons are hoping to put aside their semi-final exit in 2022 to Morocco by going all the way to lift a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
