  • Smoking, drinking don’t boost creativity’ Veteran musician, Bright Chimezie

Veteran musician, Bright Chimezie, has countered the claims by some artists that smoking and drinking alcohol boost creativity.

The ‘Because English’ hitmaker dismissed such claims as false.

Speaking in a recent episode of the CreativTea Podcast, Chimezie insisted that artists who smoke or drink are only having “fun” and not doing so to boost their creativity.

“The claims that you need to drink or smoke to get music inspiration is false. If you are drinking or smoking, you are just having fun. That doesn’t mean it will boost your creativity,” he said.

The veteran singer added that music inspiration comes naturally.

Crisis is brewing in the House of Representatives as members prepare for a showdown with the Speaker, Dr Tajudeen Abbas, when the House reconvenes on September 23, investigations by Weekend LEADERSHIP have revealed.

Already, some angry members have started compiling what they described as the ‘iniquities’ of the Speaker and the House leadership.

They alleged that Abbas and others short-changed members of the House in the sharing of privileges.

Members of the National Assembly, which comprises the Senate and the House of Representatives, are currently on their annual legislative recess.

The lawmakers are expected to reconvene on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

On July 23, the Speaker of the House declared the adjournment and advised members to take advantage of the break to engage in constituency work, attend to local issues, and monitor federal projects within their areas.

The annual recess is a routine part of the National Assembly’s legislative calendar. It allows lawmakers to balance national duties with constituency responsibilities and personal commitments.

Investigations by LEADERSHIP Weekend showed that the irate lawmakers are using the holiday to form caucuses to discuss issues affecting them and their welfare.

  • Crisis in Ibeju-Lekki as Residents protest Killing of Unarmed man by Police.

Hundreds of aggrieved residentsmostly youths poured onto the streets of Onosa on Friday, mounting roadblocks and halting traffic to protest the fatal shooting of an unarmed man allegedly by police the previous night. Two other persons were said to be in critical condition at a nearby hospital.

The demonstration, which began in the morning as word of the killing spread through the community, quickly gridlocked movement across Onosa and adjoining routes.

A video obtained by POLITICS NIGERIA showed a large crowd marching while police officers were visible on the scene, apparently to deter further unrest. In another clip, protesters piled tyres across the roadway; the victim’s body was visible inside a car.

“The protest was against the police in Ibeju-Lekki after the killing of an unarmed citizen. It happened at Onosa,” a resident confirmed.

“Two people are in the hospital now,” another eyewitness said.

Community members accused the police of excessive force and demanded accountability, urging authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible. As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Police Command had not issued a formal statement on the incident.

The episode has renewed public anxiety over law-enforcement abuses nearly five years after the EndSARS protests, a youth-led movement that drew global attention to allegations of extrajudicial killings, torture and extortion. Although the federal government announced the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) on October 11, 2020, rights groups have continued to document reports of unlawful arrests and excessive force, further straining public trust.

  • 4,000 inmates freed as FG pays fines to decongest prisons.

FG records 70% surge in 48-hour e-visa processing

The Federal Government has released more than 4,000 inmates from Correctional Centres across the Country after offsetting fines and compensation for non-violent offenders, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, has said.

Speaking at the Mid-Term Sectoral Performance Retreat of the Ministry and its Agencies on Thursday, the minister said the move was part of efforts to decongest prisons, cut down Government spending on inmate upkeep and give low-risk convicts a second chance at rehabilitation.

While outlining the reforms carried out under his leadership, he declared that the Ministry had dismantled inefficient systems, modernised critical processes and positioned Nigeria’s interior management for greater efficiency, transparency and security.

He emphasised that holding public office was “a call to service” and not just a political appointment. He said the reforms were driven by a “private sector mentality” where efficiency, accountability and legacy matter.

On prison reforms, Tunji-Ojo disclosed that the Ministry secured private sector funding to pay fines for over 4,000 non-violent inmates whose release had been delayed by inability to settle minor penalties.

“This has decongested correctional centres by about 5% and saved government billions of naira in feeding costs”, he added.

He urged States to take advantage of recent Constitutional amendments that moved Correctional Centres to the concurrent list, allowing them to build and manage their own facilities or enter into partnerships with Federal Government.

  • Police Seal Off Edo NLC Secretariat, Block Inauguration.

Heavily armed police operatives on Wednesday sealed off the Edo State secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), popularly known as the Adams Oshiomhole Labour House, to stop the inauguration of the union’s Caretaker Committee.

Main gate of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) was also manned by security personnel, while an armoured personnel carrier was stationed at the Labour House. Witnesses said suspected thugs were seen loitering around the secretariat.

Despite the security blockade, the inauguration eventually took place at another venue in Benin City, where Prof. Monday Igbafen was sworn in as the Caretaker Chairman.

It was learnt that NLC leaders had initially gathered at the UNIBEN ASUU Secretariat for the inauguration, but called it off at the location after receiving security reports.

Some labour leaders from neighbouring states, who had planned to attend the inauguration at the Labour House, lamented being denied access to the venue.

According to The Nation, Comrade Augustine Igben of the Maritime Workers Union expressed dismay at the police action, describing it as unnecessary.

He said, “I felt embarrassed about the whole thing. How can the police barricade the Labour House when there is no war? It is a Labour issue. They should allow Labour settle the issues themselves.

“I was not allowed entry. Where am I going to pass through? There were lots of security men, and I also saw some civilians mixed up with them.”

  • Won’t Contest For Any Position, I Don’t Want To Go To The Senate El-Rufai.

A former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has stated that he has no interest in contesting for any political office.
'Pointing One Finger At Others With Four Pointing Back' - APC Slams El-Rufai Over Recent Actions
According to El-Rufai, his renewed involvement in politics is driven only by the need to support credible leadership at the state and national levels.

He lamented that Nigerians can see the failures of the incumbent government without further explanation.

El-Rufai spoke in Kaduna on Wednesday while receiving a group of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) youths who defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) under the leadership of Aliyu Bello.

“This is a government that does nothing but lie every day. Everyone’s conscience tells them the truth. I am not contesting for anything; I don’t want to go to the Senate. I am not contesting for any position. That is why I am calling on you: let us join hands and ensure we remove the oppressors,” he added.

He said his initial plan after leaving office was to retire completely from partisan politics, but that recent developments had compelled him to return, though not with personal ambition.

“When I finished my tenure as governor of Kaduna, my intention was to step back and rest. But given the way things have turned out, I believe we must play our part to bring about better leadership. That is why we are back in politics,” El-Rufai said.

He stressed that his role now is to support young people, women, and reform-minded Nigerians to take ownership of the political process and drive change.

The former governor urged young people to get registered and participate fully in the electoral process.

In his remarks, Aliyu Bello, who led the PDP youth defectors to the ADC, said his mission has always been to empower young people rather than encourage thuggery.

After the briefing, the people in a statement signed on behalf of the Oworo Foundation by Mr Yomi Berida in Abuja, the people argued that historical records confirm that Ajaokuta was a district in Oworo Division, while Osara and Lokoja were integral communities within Oworoland.

The Olu of Oworo stool they stated further was established in 1825, saying it predated the Ohinoyi stool, created in 1860.

The Olu of Oworo stool they stated further was established in 1825, saying it predated the Ohinoyi stool, created in 1860. According to them, the historical context underscored Oworo’s deep-rooted connection to these lands. The approval of traditional stools by the Executive Governor of Kogi State, including the Ohi of Ajaokuta, Ohireba Aniebira of Lokoja, and Ohiekura of Osara is uncalled for as it has sparked widespread concern among our people. “Historical records confirm that Ajaokuta was a district in Oworo Division, while Osara and Lokoja were integral communities within Oworoland. • Sowore Asks Abuja Court To Dismiss ‘Defective’ Forgery, Cybercrime Charges, Wants IGP Egbetokun Sanctioned For Violating Police Act.

Sowore is facing allegations bordering on criminal defamation, forgery of a police wireless message, and cybercrime. However, through his counsel, Abubakar Marshal, he argued that the charges are “defective, incompetent, and an abuse of prosecutorial powers” in violation of the Nigeria Police Act and Section 174(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Human rights activist and publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore, has urged Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja to strike out the charges brought against him by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

At Wednesday’s proceedings, prosecution counsel Barrister Madaki informed the court that efforts to serve the second defendant, SaharaReporters, had been unsuccessful.

He explained that although the court granted an order for substituted service, the process of publishing the charges in national dailies had not yet been completed.

He, therefore, requested additional time to perfect the service.

Defence counsel Marshal, however, informed the court that he had filed a preliminary objection challenging the competence of the charges.

He insisted that the objection must be heard before any arraignment could take place.

  • Married man sentenced to prison for faking his death before fleeing US to live with mistress he met online.

A Wisconsin, USA man who staged his own kayaking drowning to abandon his wife and three children for a woman he met online has been sentenced to three months in jail.

Ryan Borgwardt, 45, of Watertown, appeared in court on Tuesday and was convicted of obstructing an officer. He received an 89-day jail sentence – matching the number of days he successfully misled law enforcement about his whereabouts.

The sentence was nearly double what prosecutors had recommended in a plea deal, according to FOX6News. “I deeply regret the actions I did that night and all the pain I caused my family and friends,” Borgwardt told the court before sentencing.

Judge Mark Slate, who presided over the case, said: “He obstructed law enforcement for a total of 89 days.” He added that the longer sentence serves as a warning to anyone considering faking their death to escape responsibilities.

Borgwardt was reported missing on August 12, 2024, after telling his wife the previous night he would be kayaking on Green Lake, about 100 miles northwest of Milwaukee. Investigators initially treated the case as a potential drowning. After 58 days of unsuccessful searches, suspicions grew that Borgwardt had staged his death.

Evidence revealed he had obtained a new passport three months earlier, applied for a $375,000 life insurance policy, reversed his vasectomy, and moved funds to a foreign account. Investigators later discovered he had been communicating with a woman from Uzbekistan and planned to meet her abroad
