  • Exposed: Alleged Embezzlement of Police Funds Under IGP Egbetokun Sparks Outrage

Recent reports have surfaced alleging that the quarterly allocation of ₦4 million (approximately $2,500) designated for state police commands has been misappropriated by the Police Management Team under the leadership of Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun. This revelation has intensified concerns over financial mismanagement within the Nigeria Police Force.

Further compounding these concerns, an investigation highlighted that divisional police offices across the country operate on meager quarterly budgets ranging between ₦15,000 and ₦30,000. This inadequate funding reportedly hampers effective policing and may inadvertently foster environments where corruption can thrive.

Adding to the controversy, the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has been embroiled in a financial scandal. Members of the PCRC have called on IGP Egbetokun to investigate the National Chairman, Mogaji Olaniyan, over allegations of misappropriating funds totaling over ₦60 million. Despite petitions submitted, there has been little to no action taken on the matter.

These allegations have led to public outcry, with citizens and civil society organizations demanding transparency and accountability within the police force. The hashtag #EgbetokunMustGo has been trending on social media platforms, reflecting the growing demand for leadership change.

  • Panic in Enugu: Residents Protest Discovery of Live Explosives in Farmlands, Blame Army Shooting Drills

Residents of Ochima in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, Enugu State, have staged peaceful protests following the recent discovery of a live explosive in their farmland. The community alleges that the explosive is a consequence of the Nigerian Army’s shooting exercises conducted by the 82 Division, Enugu.

The community expresses fears over their safety, citing previous incidents where bullets, bombs, and missiles from military exercises have caused injuries, death, and property damage. They recall a tragic incident in February 2022 when a resident named Gloria was killed by a stray bullet during military activities.

Protesters carried placards with messages such as “Nigeria Army should leave Ochima community alone” and “Government should come and rescue Ochima community from Nigerian Army.” They report having found live bombs twice, last year and again recently, which required intervention by the police and bomb disposal experts.

The community reports that the military’s presence and activities have led to trauma, displacement, and disruption of farming and daily life. They previously protested in 2024 against military encroachment and took legal action, with the case pending in court.

The Town Union President General, Mr. Gerald Okwesili Ubaka, voiced concerns about the danger posed by the military shooting range and called for intervention from government authorities.

All efforts to get a reaction from the Nigerian Army, 82 Division, Enugu, proved abortive as the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, did not respond to calls or messages.

  • Urgent Call: South-East Governors Must Halt Land Allocations to Armed Herdsmen and Jihadist Elements

A recent report by the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) has raised alarms over the occupation of approximately 950 locations across the South-East region by armed herdsmen and jihadist groups. These areas, predominantly forests, have become operational bases for criminal activities, including kidnapping and violence against local communities.

The report implicates certain state authorities in facilitating this occupation by issuing land certificates to these groups, allegedly in exchange for political support. This practice has been linked to the increasing insecurity and displacement of indigenous populations in the region.

Intersociety’s findings indicate that about 40% of the 1,940 communities in the South-East are under significant threat from these groups. The organization urges immediate action from state governments to revoke any land allocations made to armed herdsmen and to implement stringent security measures to protect the affected communities.

  • Local Firms Drive Growth in Nigeria’s Oil Sector

Nigeria’s oil and gas industry is witnessing a transformation as local companies take the lead in driving growth and innovation. Following divestments by global oil majors, indigenous firms are expanding operations and investing heavily in previously underutilized assets. Notably, Green Energy Limited launched Nigeria’s first locally developed onshore crude terminal, Otakikpo, capable of handling 360,000 barrels per day, potentially unlocking over 40 stranded fields. Conoil Producing Limited has also initiated shipments of a new crude oil blend, while subsidiaries like Oando Trading are actively marketing new supplies. Renaissance Africa Energy plans a $15 billion investment to boost crude and gas production, while Seplat Energy is reopening 400 dormant wells with a $320 million investment to ramp up output. These initiatives are crucial for achieving the government’s goal of increasing oil production by an additional 1 million barrels per day. However, these local firms face significant challenges including security threats, community conflict, oil theft, and ageing infrastructure. Despite this, local producers now contribute over 50% of Nigeria’s oil production, up from 40%, marking a pivotal shift in the country’s energy industry.

  • BREAKING: Suspected Arms Supplier to IPOB/ESN Arrested in Anambra – Major Security Breakthrough

    Anambra, Nigeria – June 3, 2025
In a significant breakthrough in the fight against insecurity in the Southeast, security operatives have apprehended a suspected arms supplier believed to be providing weapons to members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

The arrest took place during a covert operation coordinated by a joint task force of the Nigerian Army and Department of State Services (DSS). The suspect, whose identity is currently being withheld for investigative purposes, was reportedly found in possession of high-grade firearms and ammunition intended for delivery to militant cells in the region.

According to preliminary intelligence reports, the suspect had been on the security watchlist for months and is believed to be part of a wider arms trafficking network fueling separatist violence in Anambra and nearby states.

A senior security official involved in the operation confirmed that digital communication devices, logistics plans, and records of transactions were recovered from the suspect, shedding light on the scale of the weapons distribution network.

Authorities say the arrest is a “critical link” in dismantling the illegal supply chain that supports violent agitation and criminal operations under the guise of secessionist movements.

The development is expected to lead to further arrests and intelligence breakthroughs as investigations continue.

The Federal Government has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on armed insurrection and urged citizens to report suspicious activity in their communities to aid ongoing efforts to secure lives and property.

The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) has condemned the University of Ibadan's (UI) recent decision to increase tuition fees for the 2023/2024 academic session. The new fees, ranging from ₦230,000 to ₦412,000, represent a staggering 453% to 750% increase from the previous session's fees of ₦64,600 to ₦69,600 .

ERC describes the hike as "callous, unjustifiable, and anti-poor," highlighting that previous fee increases have not led to improvements in students' learning and living conditions. The group also criticizes the Students' Union's approach to the issue, urging for a more democratic and inclusive response from student leadership .
