Gumi made the call during his weekly Tafsir session at the Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna while speaking on “How Wives in Islam Can Also Divorce Their Cruel Husbands Without Compensation.”

  • ABU Debunks Viral Claim Linking It to Nuclear Weapons Development.

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has dismissed a viral social media video alleging that the institution was secretly involved in developing nuclear weapons for Nigeria.

In a statement by the university’s Director of Public Affairs, Malam Auwalu Umar, ABU described the AI-generated video as false, misleading, and deliberately crafted to misinform the public about Nigeria’s peaceful nuclear energy program.

The video had claimed that Nigerian scientists in the 1980s enriched weapons grade uranium in Kaduna, with ABU researchers allegedly obtaining centrifuge equipment from Pakistan’s AQ Khan network.

Umar, however, debunked these allegations as baseless and unsubstantiated, clarifying that during the 1980s, most scientists at ABU’s Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT) were still undergoing training abroad and could not have been involved in any uranium enrichment activity.

He emphasized that all of Nigeria’s nuclear activities have been transparent and strictly for peaceful purposes, in line with the country’s commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Pelindaba Treaty, which ban nuclear weapons development.

According to Umar, the Centre for Energy Research and Training, founded in 1976, operates in partnership with the IAEA and other international collaborators from the U.S., Russia, and China and has never engaged in any secret weapons project.

“ABU has consistently focused on the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology to promote national development,” he stated, adding that the university’s founder, Sir Ahmadu Bello, had shown early interest in peaceful atomic research after visiting the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the U.S. in 1960.

He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to advancing science and technology for the benefit of humanity and to upholding Nigeria’s international obligations on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

  • Obasanjo Finally Reveals Why He Rejected El-Rufai as His Successor in 2007.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has opened up on why he refused to choose former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, as his preferred successor when he was leaving office in 2007.

Speaking at the second edition of the Ajibosin Platform Annual Symposium held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo disclosed that El-Rufai was one of his trusted aides during his administration.

However, he turned down the suggestion to make him president because he believed the former FCT Minister was “not yet mature enough” to handle Nigeria’s leadership at the time.

According to Obasanjo, the idea was pushed to him towards the end of his administration, but he refused to yield, insisting that El-Rufai still had a lot to learn before being ready for such responsibility.

The former president made the revelation while reacting to a speech by former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, who delivered the keynote address at the event.

Chidoka had recalled how El-Rufai introduced him to Obasanjo at age 34; a meeting that later led to his appointment as the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Interrupting Chidoka’s remarks, Obasanjo said with a smile, “Let him tell you. He didn’t mention that when I was leaving government, he was pushing that his friend, El-Rufai, should be brought in as my successor.” Turning to Chidoka, he added jokingly, “No be so?” to which Chidoka nodded in agreement.

Obasanjo continued, “I did not yield to the pressure. Later, he asked why I didn’t agree, and I told him El-Rufai needed to mature. Many years later, after seeing his performance, he came back to me and said, ‘You were absolutely correct — El-Rufai needed to mature.’”

  • Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has renewed his call for the Federal Government to initiate peace talks with bandits, insisting that dialogue remains the most effective route to achieving lasting security in Nigeria.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Gumi referenced the recent peace deal between Israel and Hamas as proof that even long-standing conflicts can be resolved through negotiation.

According to him, if the United States could broker peace between Israel and Hamas—two groups once at bitter odds, then Nigeria should also be able to engage its own armed groups in dialogue.

“Peace between Israel and Hamas, whom they call terrorists, was brokered by the USA. Who says peace can’t be made with terrorists? Make peace with bandits and let us have peace,” Gumi wrote.

The Kaduna-based cleric, who has long advocated for engagement with non-state armed groups, reiterated that meaningful dialogue is key to ending the violence that has plagued many parts of northern Nigeria.

  • Tinubu Grants Presidential Pardon for Herbert Macaulay,  175 Nigerians

On Thursday, the Council of State approved the exercise of the presidential prerogative of mercy for 175 persons across different categories.

The decision followed a presentation by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s recommendations based on the report of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy during the council meeting held at the State House, Abuja.

Although the full list of beneficiaries is yet to be released, pardons were granted to Herbert Macaulay, Nigeria’s nationalist icon, and Maj.-Gen. Mamman Vatsa (retd.), a former FCT minister, was executed in 1986 under the Babangida regime. Members of the Ogoni Nine and Ogoni Four were also named among the beneficiaries.

Macaulay, regarded as the father of Nigerian nationalism, was twice jailed by the British colonial authorities — in 1913 for alleged fund misappropriation and in 1928 for sedition following his newspaper’s publication during the Eleko of Lagos crisis. Historians have long questioned the fairness of his convictions.

Vatsa, a poet and member of the Supreme Military Council, was executed by firing squad for an alleged coup attempt, a case that has remained controversial for decades, with repeated calls for a posthumous pardon.

Of the 175 approved cases, 82 inmates received full pardons, 65 had their sentences reduced, while seven death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State said the decision reflects President Tinubu’s “commitment to justice, fairness, and correctional reform.”

The meeting, chaired by the President, also ratified key appointments, including Dr Aminu Yusuf from Niger State as Chairman of the National Population Commission and Tonge Bularafa as Federal Commissioner representing Yobe State.

    Both nominations were unanimously endorsed.

  • Arise News anchor’s murder suspects got arms from Niger Republic Police.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has revealed that the armed robbery gang responsible for the killing of ARISE News anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, sourced their weapons from a supplier in the Niger Republic.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement on Friday while announcing the arrest of 12 suspects linked to the September 29, 2025, robbery and murder at Unique Apartments, Katampe Extension, Abuja, where Maduagwu and a security guard, Barnabas Danlami, lost their lives.

Adeh said preliminary investigations showed that the syndicate procured its firearms including a locally fabricated AK-47 rifle, a pump-action gun, and a pistol — from an arms dealer operating across the Nigeria–Niger border.

“All the suspects are from Kaduna and Katsina States and have confessed to obtaining their weapons from a yet-to-be-identified supplier in the Niger Republic,” Adeh said.

The police listed the arrested suspects as Shamsudeen Hassan, Hassan Isah (22), Abubakar Alkamu (27), Sani Sirajo (20), Mashkur Jamilu (28), Suleiman Badamasi (21), Abdulsalam Saleh, Zaharadeen Muhammad (23), Musa Adamu (30), Sumayya Mohammed (27), Isah Abdulrahman (25), and Musa Umar (31).

Adeh said the suspects confessed to carrying out operations at Katampe 1, a hotel in Apo and Zuba, before the robbery that claimed the lives of Arise News anchor and the security guard.

“They have also confessed to participating in other armed robbery operations at Katampe 1, a hotel in Apo, and another in Zuba, all within the FCT, ” the statement added.

Adeh said further investigations confirmed that Hassan Shamsudeen fired the shot that killed the security guard during the attack.

  • Bill for Creation of Ibadan State Passes Second Reading in House of Representatives.

A bill seeking to create a new state in Nigeria’s South-West geopolitical zone has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.

Sponsored by Hon. Abass Adigun, representing Ibadan North East/Ibadan South East Federal Constituency, the bill proposes an amendment to the 1999 Constitution to establish Ibadan State from the current Oyo State.

During Thursday’s plenary, Adigun argued that Ibadan, once the capital of the old Western Region, deserves statehood, noting that other regional capitals like Enugu and Kaduna have since become states. He described the proposal as a “monumental step toward equitable development and true federalism.

Adigun cited Ibadan’s large population and landmass as justification, claiming that “one local government in Ibadan is bigger than three in Bayelsa State.” His comment sparked protest from Bayelsa lawmaker Obuku Ofurji, who called it “disrespectful.” Adigun later apologised but maintained that his statement was factual.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, referred the bill to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for further consideration.

The proposal aligns with renewed agitation for state creation across Nigeria. In September, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, appealed to President Bola Tinubu to ensure Ibadan State is created before 2027.

Creating a new state under Section 8 of the 1999 Constitution requires approval by two-thirds of the National Assembly, the affected state’s assembly, local councils, and a referendum supported by two-thirds of residents in the proposed area.

No new state has been created in Nigeria since the return to democratic rule in 1999.

  • Kano Politician Blasts President Tinubu for Ignoring Insecurity Victims, Says “He Prefers Weddings Over Condolence Visits”

Alhaji Ibrahim Ali Amin, popularly known as Ibrahim Little — a former Kano governorship candidate and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) — has taken a swipe at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over what he described as the president’s lack of empathy for victims of insecurity across Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview reported by Daily Post on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, Little expressed disappointment that Tinubu has failed to visit communities devastated by terrorist attacks, banditry, and communal clashes since assuming office.

According to him, the president’s absence from crisis-hit regions sends a troubling message to citizens who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. He accused the president of prioritizing attendance at weddings and funerals of political elites instead of consoling grieving Nigerians.

“In the time since Tinubu took office, he has never travelled to any region affected by Boko Haram or banditry. On the other hand, he was in Kaduna for the wedding of a senator and in Plateau for a burial,” Little said.

He added that Nigerians expect their leader to demonstrate compassion and leadership by visiting affected areas to provide moral support and renew public trust in government’s commitment to tackling insecurity.

Little maintained that the president’s approach makes it appear as though the government is detached from the suffering of ordinary citizens. He urged Tinubu to show true statesmanship by reaching out to victims of violence, insisting that such visits would go a long way in rebuilding national confidence.

  • Southern Kaduna Farmers Protest Over Herders Attacks, Destruction of Farmlands.

Despite attempts to stop their demonstrations earlier in the week, aggrieved farmers in Southern Kaduna—mostly women—returned to the streets on Saturday to protest the destruction of their farmlands and recurring attacks by armed herders.

The protesters, dressed in black and joined by some men and children, marched barefoot from several villages including Aribi, Kenyi, Kutaho, Kabara, Kushe, Dogonkurmi, Katugal, Nkojo, and Kurmin Jibrin to the palace of the Chief of Koro, His Highness Yohanna Akaito, in Kurmin Jibrin, Kagarko Local Government Area. Many had their faces painted black, with leaves on their heads and in their mouths, symbolizing mourning and anguish.

Chanting sorrowful songs and prayers such as “Our Father in heaven, we have come before You; please wipe away our tears,” the farmers decried what they described as unchecked violence and impunity by armed herders destroying their crops and livelihoods.

On reaching the palace, the demonstrators forced their way in, pleading with the traditional ruler to intervene and pressure the government and security agencies to act swiftly. They warned they would return to the streets if authorities failed to respond.

Speaking before the monarch, one of the women lamented: “Your Highness, we come before you as widows, orphans, and suffering sons and daughters of Koro land. Our farmlands have been destroyed; everything we toiled for is gone. Each time we defend our farms, we are attacked with machetes. They are killing our husbands and children.”

She appealed to the Chief for urgent action, saying, “We have come because we have no one else to run to. Please help us end this suffering and restore peace and justice to our land.”

  • Nigerians Groan as Cooking Gas Price Hits ₦1,800 Per Kilogram Amid Shortage.

The cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has surged sharply across several Nigerian cities, including Lagos, Ogun, and Ibadan, following a nationwide shortage.

The scarcity was triggered by a three-day strike by oil workers, which disrupted gas supply and distribution across the country. Prices have also spiked in other states such as Port Harcourt, Cross River, Kano, and Kaduna.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) had embarked on the strike last week to protest the dismissal of some workers at the Dangote Refinery. Although the strike has since been suspended, the brief disruption in supply caused many gas depots to run dry, leading to rationing and steep price hikes.

In many parts of the country, the price of cooking gas has jumped from around ₦1,000 per kilogram to between ₦1,600 and ₦1,800.

In Abuja, refilling a 12.5kg cylinder now costs between ₦17,000 and ₦18,750, depending on the location. In districts such as Wuse, Garki, and Kubwa, a kilogram of LPG sells for ₦1,350 to ₦1,500, while some outlets in Jabi offer a 12.5kg refill for about ₦17,000.

Retailers in the city report that many outlets ran out of stock by Sunday, while those still selling gas increased their prices significantly.

A similar situation is unfolding in Lagos and Ogun States, where the price per kilogram rose from about ₦1,000 and ₦1,100 respectively last week to between ₦1,300 and ₦1,800 over the weekend.

Across Nigeria, households and small businesses continue to feel the impact of the gas shortage, as prices soar daily with no immediate relief in sight.

  • ‘This Is Terrorism’ - Bukarti Warns Against Peace Talks With Bandits, Public Display Of Weapons

News reports that recently, communities in Jibia and Batsari Local Government Areas held peace dialogues with bandits who attended the meetings openly carrying sophisticated weapons.

Videos and pictures from the gatherings showed the gunmen displaying heavy arms in full view of villagers.

Reacting to the development, Bukarti said the scenes were nothing short of intimidation and a calculated attempt to frighten the public.

“Bandits are coming out with heavy and dangerous weapons during peace talks, tying them to their bodies, giving speeches, and allowing themselves to be recorded on video. They do this deliberately to frighten people. That is exactly what terrorism is, creating fear to achieve political, religious, or ethnic goals,” he said.

He likened the display to military parades in other countries.

“When you see them stepping out with heavy weapons as if they are going to a world war, it is a calculated attempt to scare the public and send a message to the Nigerian government that nothing can be done to them,” Bukarti said.

‘Peace Meetings With Terrorists Are Illegal’
The lawyer further stressed that both the possession of such weapons and the so-called peace meetings contravene Nigerian law.

“This is completely forbidden. No one is allowed to own such weapons, let alone display them. Even these peace dialogues with terrorists are unlawful because there is no legal framework that allows it,” he explained.

News understands that recently, Kaduna-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, who is known for engaging with armed groups, advised security agencies not to disrupt such meetings, warning that it could escalate tensions.

However, Bukarti disagreed, saying what is happening amounts to surrendering to criminals.

“The public and the government must understand that these meetings are not peace. They are submission. And the more terrorists are allowed to show off their weapons, the weaker the state looks in the eyes of citizens,” Bukarti said.

He urged the government to take direct control of any negotiations, if it believes talks are unavoidable.

“If the government feels it cannot fully protect communities from these attacks, then it should at least lead the talks, set clear conditions, and make sure the criminals are disarmed and rehabilitated. Leaving citizens to negotiate on their own only strengthens the bandits,” he said.

His warnings come amid rising insecurity in Katsina, where rural communities continue to suffer repeated attacks, killings, and abductions by armed gangs.

  • Retired police officers threaten to storm NASS over pension .

Court declines arrest of ex-senior cops accused of falsifying age

Union of Retired Police Officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) has resolved to undertake a peaceful protest at the National Assembly over the payment of pension emoluments.

In a statement by the chairman of the Kaduna State chapter, CSP Mannir Lawal Zaria (rtd), the union lamented the unbearable conditions faced by members.

Zaria cited widespread poverty, lack of access to healthcare, inability to afford basic feeding, children being withdrawn from schools, and increasing deaths among retired personnel.

According to the union, representatives from the Kaduna chapter, alongside delegates from 35 other states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), will converge next Monday on the National Assembly to drive home their grievances.

The resolution followed a virtual meeting held on Monday, September 22, 2025. The party revisited the long-standing demand for the exit of the Nigeria Police Force from the CPS.

Zaria observed that for more than 15 years, the union has consistently petitioned the government, staged protests, and submitted memoranda to lawmakers to push for the exit.

He recalled that the agitation had led to three public hearings, during which lawmakers were presented with evidence comparing the meagre pensions received by retired police officers under the CPS with the more robust benefits enjoyed by their counterparts in the military and the Department of State Services (DSS).

  • FIRS Urges Nigerians to See Taxes as Nation-Building, Not Punishment.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has appealed to Nigerians to view taxation as a tool for sustainable development rather than a burden.

Speaking in Kaduna at a sensitization programme on The Role of Media in Voluntary Tax Compliance, FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji, represented by Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, said taxes fund essential services such as hospitals, schools, and roads. “Taxes are not just government revenue; they are the foundation of growth in our nation,” he noted, calling for a culture of voluntary compliance built on trust.

He stressed that many Nigerians still see taxes as punishment, hence the need for enlightenment and accountability. “When the media educates, investigates, and holds leaders accountable, it builds trust. A citizen who believes in the fairness and transparency of the system is more likely to comply,” he added.

Atoyebi urged journalists to act as educators and watchdogs, while tax expert Dr. Mohammed Adamu described voluntary compliance as key to steady revenue and patriotism. “Tax revenues fund our roads, schools, hospitals, and security. A compliant taxpayer is a stakeholder in national progress,” Adamu said.

He praised reforms like the FIRS TaxPro Max platform and taxpayer service units but insisted fairness, transparency, and education remain central to compliance.

Similarly, Ishaku Ankuma of the Kaduna Government Business Office warned of penalties for evasion, stressing that tax compliance certificates are now crucial for financial dealings. “Voluntary tax compliance is not just a legal requirement but a civic responsibility and patriotic act,” he said.

The event ended with a call on the media to simplify tax issues, expose evasion, and encourage public confidence in Nigeria’s tax system.
