• AAC Accuses Tinubu Government of Human Rights Abuses, Demands Shutdown of Imo Police Tiger Base

The African Action Congress (AAC) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of enabling widespread human rights abuses by security agencies, calling for the immediate closure of the Imo Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, popularly known as Tiger Base. In a statement signed by the party’s spokesperson, Rex I. Elanu, the AAC alleged that the facility has been associated with unlawful detentions, enforced disappearances, torture, and extrajudicial killings—particularly targeting South-East residents.
The party also condemned the reported killing of 10 women protesters by Nigerian Army personnel in Adamawa State, describing the incident as a grave violation of citizens’ rights. AAC demanded independent investigations into both the Imo and Adamawa incidents and urged Nigerians to resist what it calls systemic oppression under the Tinubu administration, insisting that a revolutionary alternative is needed to protect citizens’ dignity and safety.

  • The Central African Republic (CAR) is caught between two Russian mercenary forces — the long-established Wagner Group and the Kremlin-controlled Africa Corps.

Russia’s Defense Ministry wants CAR to replace Wagner with Africa Corps and pay for its services, but Bangui says it cannot afford it, offering gold, uranium, and iron instead. CAR officials prefer Wagner, praising its combat effectiveness and loyalty to President Faustin Archange Touadéra, despite its record of human rights abuses.

The Africa Corps, made up of Russian soldiers and ex-Wagner fighters, focuses more on training and resource deals than combat. Analysts say the Kremlin’s push reflects a broader geopolitical strategy to expand influence in Africa amid the Ukraine war, using low-cost operations to gain access to minerals and political leverage.

However, CAR’s resistance could strain ties with Moscow. The situation underscores a wider issue across Africa — governments relying on foreign forces for stability at the expense of national sovereignty.

  • Burkina Faso junta detains NGO workers for 'spying'
Burkina Faso’s military government has arrested eight staff members of the Dutch-based International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO), accusing them of spying and treason. Those detained include three Europeans, a Malian, and four Burkinabé, among them the NGO’s country director and deputy.

Authorities claim the group collected and shared sensitive security data with foreign powers, posing a threat to national security. INSO denies the allegations, stating its information only supports humanitarian worker safety and was shared transparently with local authorities.

INSO’s Burkina Faso office was suspended on 31 July for allegedly gathering data without permission, but the government now accuses it of continuing secret activities afterward. INSO says it ceased operations after the suspension and has sought dialogue to secure the release of its staff.

The arrests come amid rising tensions between Burkina Faso’s junta-led government and Western nations. Since Capt. Ibrahim Traoré seized power in 2022, the country has cut ties with France, turned to Russia for support, and faced widespread accusations of human rights abuses and repression while battling Islamist insurgents.

  • Lagos CP Warns Officers Against Phone Searches, extortion, Others.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, has warned officers under his command against extortion, harassment, human rights abuses, and the unprofessional practice of searching people’s phones, particularly youths.

The directive was issued during a strategic security meeting with senior officers, in line with the mandate of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

In a statement by Police Public Relations Officer SP Abimbola Adebisi, CP Jimoh stressed that policing must uphold citizens’ rights and dignity, noting that crime prevention “must be done with a human face.” He said stop-and-search of phones is prohibited unless the device is an exhibit in an investigation, and even then, checks must be conducted only at police stations and strictly by law.

The CP also highlighted recent operational breakthroughs, including the arrest of Samsideen Oladiti, alias Shameleon, linked to violent crimes; Jude Onouha, a suspected vehicle vandal who disguised as a security guard to access estates; and John Samuel, an ex-convict and suspected assassin arrested for armed robbery and attempted murder while trying to steal gold jewellery worth millions of naira.

Commending his men, Jimoh urged Lagos residents to continue providing credible information to aid policing efforts. “These successes reflect the Command’s commitment to rid the state of criminal elements and ensure residents’ safety,” he said.

  • Alleged naira abuse: Rights group gives EFCC ultimatum to prosecute Abuja realtor.

The Initiative Against Human Rights Abuse and Torture, INAHURAT, has given the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, a one-month ultimatum to prosecute an Abuja-based realtor, Mrs Rebecca Omokamo Isaac, popularly known as Bilikisu Ishaku Aliyu, over alleged abuse of the naira.

The ultimatum followed a petition INAHURAT forwarded to the anti-graft agency concerning the alleged act.

In a reminder letter dated 18th September, 2025, signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Gerald O. Katchy, and addressed to the EFCC chairman, the rights group recalled that it had earlier petitioned the Commission on July 21, 2025, drawing attention to what it described as “repeated and intentional abuse” of the national currency by the realtor.

INAHURAT expressed disappointment that, despite the availability of “obvious evidence,” no visible action had been taken by the anti-graft agency nearly two months after the petition was submitted.

The group warned that failure by the EFCC to investigate and charge the matter to court within one month would amount to selective justice. It threatened to make the matter public and approach the court for an order of mandamus compelling the Commission to act.

The letter emphasized that Nigerians are keenly watching and waiting for the outcome, stressing that the credibility of the EFCC is at stake in the matter.

It would be recalled that the EFCC acknowledged receipt of the petition, with reference number EFCC/PET/HQR/2932/2025.

According to the petition, Godwin-Isaac was captured in multiple videos “spraying and trampling on naira notes” at various social events held in Etsako, Edo State, and Obosi, Anambra State.

  • Obasanjo Recounts Emotional Moment He Learned of Abacha’s Death

Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has relived the dramatic moment he was informed of the death of General Sani Abacha, the late military ruler whose regime imprisoned him.

Speaking in a video shared by Symfoni TV, Obasanjo reflected on one of Nigeria’s most turbulent political eras, offering rare personal insight into how the end of Abacha’s rule became both a personal and national turning point.

Obasanjo was jailed in 1995 after being accused of plotting a coup against Abacha’s government—charges he consistently denied. Despite the uncertainty of his imprisonment, he said he held on to the hope of eventual freedom, though he never knew when it would come.

According to him, the shocking news of Abacha’s death on June 8, 1998, first came from a prison warder.

“The day Abacha died, a warder came to me and said, ‘Sir, congratulations.’
I asked him, ‘Warder, what is the problem?’
He replied, ‘Our enemy has died.’
I asked again, ‘Who is your enemy?’ And he said, ‘Abacha.’”

Initially, Obasanjo thought it might be a trap or misinformation. But as more warders repeated the same news, he realized something significant had happened.

Within a week, Obasanjo was released from Yola Prison, marking the start of his remarkable political comeback.

Abacha’s sudden death ended a regime often associated with human rights abuses, political repression, and corruption. His successor, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, quickly initiated a transition program that restored democracy in 1999.

For Obasanjo, the moment was more than personal liberation—it was a national rebirth. Less than a year later, he won the presidential election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and became Nigeria’s first civilian president of the Fourth Republic.

Reflecting on his imprisonment, Obasanjo has often said the experience deepened his commitment to democracy and shaped many of his decisions while in office.

Since leaving office in 2007, he has remained an influential voice in Nigerian politics, frequently speaking on governance, security, and development. His recollections of the Abacha years, analysts say, highlight how moments of personal suffering can intersect with broader national transformation.

Obasanjo’s story remains a testament to resilience, timing, and the unpredictable turns of history that have defined Nigeria’s journey from military rule to democracy.

The Edo State Taskforce has apprehended several residents for allegedly violating the monthly environmental exercise, which has been reintroduced by the state government to promote a cleaner and healthier environment.

In a video clip shared on X (former Twitter) by The Benin Blogger on Sunday morning, the taskforce operatives were seen dragging residents, including teenagers, into waiting buses.

In the five-minute 16-second video, the scene showed taskforce operatives harassing their victims, including a woman who was dragged out of her shop despite reportedly not being open for business.

The operatives were also seen dragging drivers and passengers who were passing through the state on federal roads to other parts of the country out of their vehicles.

The arrests and assaults were reportedly assisted by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the task force. This has raised concerns about the enforcement of the environmental exercise and potential human rights abuses.

Residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the enforcement of the exercise, citing acts of violence and rights violations by the task force operatives.

Some have also questioned the legality of the exercise, arguing that it lacks legislative backing and contravenes constitutional provisions.

Amnesty International Indicts Security Agencies, Ebube Agu Over South-East Killings

Amnesty International has accused Nigeria’s police, military, and the South-East security outfit Ebube Agu, alongside non-state actors, of widespread killings, enforced disappearances, torture, and other human rights abuses in the region.

In its report “A Decade of Impunity: Attacks and Unlawful Killings in Southeast Nigeria”, the group said at least 1,844 people were killed between January 2021 and June 2023, with violence linked to security forces, armed groups, vigilantes, cults, and criminal gangs.

The report also highlighted IPOB/ESN’s sit-at-home enforcement, which has led to beatings, killings, economic hardship, and school closures. Amnesty further accused Ebube Agu of arbitrary arrests, extrajudicial executions, and intimidation of political critics.

Amnesty urged the government to end impunity, investigate abuses by all actors, and ensure justice for victims. As of press time, the Nigerian government and security agencies had not responded to the allegations.

  • PETER OBI SHOWS EVIDENCE OF HIS DEALINGS WITH ABACHA.

With allegations making the rounds on his alleged involvement in the government of late Military dictator, General Sani Abacha, former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has released details of his engagement to set the record straight.

Naija News reports that Obi’s clarification followed recent social media narratives and political commentary suggesting that Obi had ties with the Abacha junta, which ruled Nigeria from 1993 to 1998 and was widely condemned for human rights abuses and large-scale corruption.

Former Presidential aide, Reno Omokri had claimed that Obi, a former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), was involved with the Abacha regime through activities at Tincan Island Port in Lagos.

But in a statement on Wednesday, Peter Obi released letters that documented his co-opting, along with others, into the Taskforce on the decongestion of the Ports.

The former governor maintained that he had never met General Sani Abacha before that encounter.

He stated that his meeting with Abacha was borne out of concern as a trader and importer over the prolonged delays in clearing goods at the ports.

According to him, Abacha was approached to seek pragmatic solutions to the matter affecting economic activity and livelihoods.

Peter Obi’s statement read: “In consonance with my established principles of defending everything I am involved in, and in the interest of all men and women of goodwill, especially those committed to the pursuit of truth, I hereby attach the letter which documents my co-opting, along with others, into the Taskforce on the decongestion of the Ports.

“As I stated during my interview at the weekend and consistently maintained in the past, I had never met General Sani Abacha before that encounter. Our meeting with him was borne out of collective concern as traders and importers over the prolonged delays in clearing goods at the ports. We approached him not as political actors, but as concerned citizens seeking pragmatic solutions to a matter affecting economic activity and livelihoods.

“Our intention was clear: to advocate for efficiency, and to propose practical steps towards restoring normalcy in port operations for the benefit of the wider business community and, ultimately, the Nigerian economy.

“This clarification is offered in the interest of truth, to reaffirm that our actions were driven solely by a sense of civic duty and not political ambition.

“I don’t expect this copious evidence to bury this Abacha case because the mischief makers have ulterior motives, but it’s being placed in the public space for posterity and in line with my transparency pledge to Nigerians on any issue I am involved in.”

  • Take It Back Movement Declares June 12 National Day of Protest Against Tinubu’s “Tyranny”

The Take It Back (TIB) Movement has officially declared June 12 a National Day of Protest against what it describes as increasing tyranny, hardship, and democratic backsliding under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. The announcement was made via a press release covered by Sahara Reporters.

The movement is calling on Nigerians across the country to mobilize, occupy the streets, and demand accountability, citing worsening economic conditions, suppression of dissent, insecurity, and alleged human rights abuses as key issues fueling the protest.

“The same democracy we celebrate on June 12 is being dismantled before our eyes,” the group said.
“We will not keep silent while the masses suffer and the state protects only the wealthy.”

June 12, now officially recognized as Democracy Day in Nigeria, marks the annulled 1993 election widely considered the freest and fairest in the country’s history. For TIB, it’s a symbolic date to reclaim the promise of democracy—now seen as under threat.

The protest is expected to take place in major cities including Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan, and Port Harcourt. Security agencies have yet to respond, but tension is already building online as activists, civil society groups, and students rally support using the hashtag #June12Protest.
