  • BREAKING: Quartus Economics has recommended that the Central Bank of Nigeria introduce higher-denomination naira notes — including ₦10,000 and ₦20,000 bills — to improve currency portability and curb the rising cost of cash transactions. The economic review argues that larger notes would ease cash handling pressures amid inflation and increasing transaction expenses.

  • UPDATED: Policeman, Five Others Die in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Crash

At least six people, including a police inspector, were confirmed dead after multiple trucks collided on the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday night. The crash involved several articulated vehicles, including a fuel tanker, and triggered a fire that consumed one of the victims beyond recognition.

The impact severed the head of one truck, causing it to plunge into the river, with some occupants still unaccounted for as of press time. The accident resulted in massive traffic gridlock, forcing some motorists to drive against traffic while commercial drivers hiked fares.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority reported eight casualties in total and said emergency responders, including FRSC officers, were working to clear the scene. Police Commissioner Olorundare Jimoh confirmed brake failure as the suspected cause and vowed that those responsible will face prosecution.

The incident occurred less than 24 hours after another truck accident on Otedola Bridge.

  • Lead Counsel Wahab Shittu Withdraws From Mohbad DNA Case

Senior Advocate of Nigeria Wahab Shittu has withdrawn his law firm from legal proceedings relating to the DNA test of late singer Ilerioluwa “Mohbad” Aloba’s child.

In a statement, Shittu said the decision followed persistent false claims on social media accusing the firm of attempting to influence the DNA process. He described the allegations as baseless and said withdrawing was necessary to uphold integrity and professionalism.

Shittu emphasized that the firm has no personal stake in the DNA outcome and had advised that the test be conducted transparently at reputable DNA centres in Nigeria or abroad to avoid any compromise.

He noted that the withdrawal applies only to the DNA matter, while the firm will continue handling other legal issues involving Mohbad’s family. Formal withdrawal filings will be made in court.

  • Asset Recovery: EFCC Returns Properties Seized From Fake Spiritualist to Fraud Victim
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has handed over three properties, two luxury vehicles, and ₦1.1 million to a fraud victim, Daniel Babatunde Attiogbe. The assets were recovered from convicted fake spiritualist and advance-fee fraudster, Fatai Olalere Alli.
According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the recovered items include multiple residential properties in Ibadan and two vehicles — a Honda Pilot SUV and a Toyota Corolla. The handover, conducted by the EFCC’s Ibadan Zonal Directorate, followed a court order issued by Justice Uche Agomoh.
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, represented at the ceremony, said the Commission acted in compliance with the court’s directive, emphasizing its commitment to transparency, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law.
Attiogbe, who lost over ₦200 million to Alli under the guise of “spiritual cleansing,” praised the EFCC for restoring his confidence in justice. Alli was sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of fraud in a case that began in 2019.

  • Drama As JAMB Officials Walk Out On House Committee
A session at the National Assembly turned tense on Wednesday when representatives of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) walked out during an engagement with the House Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies.
JAMB Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede was absent and sent Director Mufutau Bello in his place. The disagreement began when Bello asked journalists to leave, claiming the documents he planned to present contained sensitive information. Committee members refused, insisting the hearing was public.
Visibly upset, Bello ordered his delegation to exit the room, prompting lawmakers to direct the Sergeant-at-Arms to arrest the officials — but they had already left the building.
The Committee has now summoned the JAMB Registrar to appear in person next Tuesday with his full management team and documents, warning that failure to comply could result in a warrant of arrest.
