NAFDAC to Enforce Ban on Small-Packaged Alcohol from January 2026.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced a firm December 2025 deadline for the prohibition of alcoholic beverages sold in sachets and bottles under 200 millilitres, with full enforcement set to begin in January 2026.

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency’s Director-General, emphasized that there will be no further extensions of the ban, urging manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to comply fully.

Supported by the Senate and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the ban aims to protect children, adolescents, and young adults from the harmful effects of alcohol abuse.

Adeyeye highlighted that small, cheap, and easily concealable alcoholic drinks contribute to addiction and have fueled social vices, including road accidents, domestic violence, school dropouts, and other forms of insecurity. “This ban is protective, not punitive. The health of our nation, especially our children, is more important than short-term economic gain,” she stated.

Prof. Adeyeye underscored that the ban aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to the World Health Organization’s Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol. She also urged Nigerians to view the measure as a collective responsibility, emphasizing that alcohol misuse among children poses a long-term threat to the nation’s security and workforce.

“The decision is grounded in science, public health, and national interest. Protecting our children and ensuring the stability of our future workforce is not just NAFDAC’s duty it is a responsibility for all Nigerians,” she concluded.

The Nigerian Army’s 2 Brigade in Akwa Ibom State has condemned the tragic death of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, the Regimental Medical Officer of the 6 Battalion, who reportedly d+ed after his wife allegedly set him ablaze during a domestic altercation at the Wellington Bassey Barracks.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Lawal Muhammad, the Army described the incident as deeply regrettable and extended its condolences to the late officer’s family.

According to the statement, preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred on September 22, 2025, following a heated argument between Lieutenant Haruna and his wife, Mrs. Retyit Obadiah Dalong Samson Haruna. The disagreement, said to have arisen from a family dispute, escalated when Mrs. Haruna allegedly set fire to household items, leading to an inferno that fatally injured her husband.

The officer suffered severe burns and was initially treated at the Battalion Medical Facility before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where he later d+ed in the early hours of Tuesday.

“The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence and emphasises the importance of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect within families,” the statement said.

Woman allegedly stabs husband to death over suspicious neighbor in Delta.

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old woman for allegedly stabbing her partner to death.

It happened in Jakpa, Uvwie Local Government Area of the state during a domestic dispute when she used a knife to kill the victim.

The suspect, identified as Bina, hails from Bayelsa State and had been cohabiting with the deceased for about four years, with two children.

The victim was rushed to the hospital but was confirmed dead after much bleeding.

Recounting what happened, Bina told police investigators: “On Monday, we were not talking to each other. He got angry because I went to meet our neighbour to help me load a recharge card since he wasn’t responding to me.”

“He told me I should never go to our neighbour for anything. He then threatened to lock up the shop he opened for me. From there, the quarrel became serious and I used the knife to stab him,” she stated.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Delta Command, SP Edafe Bright, described it as a disturbing case of domestic violence that turned fatal.

He described the incident as unfortunate and advised young people, especially women, to walk away from abusive or toxic relationships rather than resort to violence.

He said the suspect is in custody while investigation continues, after which she will be charged to court.
