  • “Political Class Behind Boko Haram” – Senator Orji Uzor Kalu Alleges Plot to Destabilize Tinubu’s Government

In a startling revelation, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, has accused certain members of Nigeria’s political elite of sponsoring Boko Haram insurgents to undermine President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ program, Kalu asserted that terrorism is being used as a political tool to destabilize the current government, similar to tactics employed against previous administrations.

Kalu elaborated that the insecurity plaguing Nigeria is politically induced, driven by individuals seeking to hijack political power. He identified politicians, wealthy businesspeople, and senior civil servants as those fueling Boko Haram, not for financial gain but to gain control.

The senator’s allegations come amid renewed concerns over Boko Haram’s activities, including recent attacks in Borno State. Kalu called for unity and patriotism among Nigerians, urging citizens to prioritize national interest over selfish political agendas.

  • Edo Community Bans Beef Sales Amid Rising Insecurity

In a bold move to protest escalating violence, residents of Elelu village in Erah community, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State, have banned the sale and consumption of beef. This decision comes in response to a series of kidnappings and killings allegedly perpetrated by suspected herdsmen.

During a recent protest, community members, including elders, youths, and vigilante leaders, expressed their anguish over the loss of lives and the disruption of their livelihoods. They reported that in the past two weeks alone, seven individuals had been kidnapped and killed, with one person still in captivity. The protesters threatened to relocate to the Edo State Government House if immediate action is not taken to address the security challenges.

Fred Enaikhe Aleburu, a community spokesperson, highlighted the sacrifices made by local defenders, stating, “These courageous men stood against armed herdsmen who had brought terror to the peaceful land. They shielded our mothers, our children, and our farmlands and for their sacrifice, they were murdered in cold blood.”

The community’s demands include the establishment of permanent security checkpoints, a comprehensive flushing of forests to eliminate terrorist elements, and emergency interventions to address food insecurity. They also called for sustained security presence to ensure long-term peace and protection.

By banning beef, the residents aim to sever economic ties with those they believe are responsible for their suffering, sending a clear message that their lives and safety are non-negotiable.

  • Wike Accuses Amaechi of Power Hunger Amid Coalition Talks
In a sharp political exchange, Nyesom Wike, Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has accused his former ally, Rotimi Amaechi, of seeking power out of personal hunger. Wike's remarks come as Amaechi, along with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, is reportedly forming a coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Wike criticized the coalition's motivations, suggesting that the leaders involved are driven by selfish interests rather than a genuine desire to serve the public. He questioned why Atiku is focusing on coalition-building instead of revitalizing the People's Democratic Party (PDP), implying that the party is not prepared for the upcoming election .

This development adds to the ongoing political realignment in Nigeria as the 2027 elections approach. The formation of this coalition, if confirmed, could significantly impact the political landscape, potentially challenging the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu.

  • “No Sin in Borrowing”: Presidency Defends Nigeria’s Debt Strategy

In a recent statement, the Nigerian Presidency has asserted that borrowing is a necessary instrument for driving economic development. Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, emphasized that when loans are utilized responsibly, borrowing should not be viewed negatively. He stated, “It is not a sin to borrow. Even developed nations like the United States of America and the United Kingdom borrow beyond their GDP. The issue is not borrowing; it is what you do with the borrowed funds.”

This clarification comes amid discussions surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s recent request to the National Assembly for approval of fresh external and domestic loans amounting to ₦34.15 trillion. The administration maintains that such borrowing is essential for funding large-scale development projects, such as highways and infrastructure, which are pivotal for economic growth.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has previously echoed similar sentiments, stating that borrowing is part of fiscal responsibility. CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele noted, “Debt is never a crime or a sin. The private entity also borrows to survive. What matters most is the debt’s quantum and the debt usage.”

However, concerns persist regarding Nigeria’s rising debt profile and the nation’s ability to service these debts. Critics argue that while borrowing can be a tool for development, it must be managed prudently to avoid long-term economic challenges.

  • Federal High Courts Locked Down as Judiciary Workers Begin Indefinite Strike

In a significant disruption to Nigeria’s judicial system, members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) have commenced an indefinite strike, effectively locking out judges, lawyers, litigants, and the public from Federal High Court premises across the country.

The strike, which began on Monday, June 2, 2025, follows a directive from JUSUN’s national body issued on May 30. The union is demanding the payment of a five-month wage award, implementation of the ₦70,000 national minimum wage, and a 25/35 percent salary increase.

At the Federal High Court headquarters in Abuja, all entrance gates were locked, leaving the premises deserted and halting all court activities. The strike has caused significant disruptions, with legal proceedings suspended and access to justice delayed for many Nigerians.

While some chapters of JUSUN have reportedly withdrawn from the industrial action, the Federal High Court gates remained closed as of 9:48 a.m. on Monday.

The strike underscores ongoing tensions between judiciary workers and the government over salary and wage issues. As the strike continues, stakeholders are calling for urgent dialogue to resolve the impasse and restore normalcy to the judicial system.

  • 2027 Elections: PDP Warns Tinubu—“Defections Won’t Win You Votes”

As Nigeria’s political landscape heats up ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC): the next election will be decided by governance, not by political defections.

Speaking on AIT’s Focus Nigeria, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, criticized the APC’s celebration of recent high-profile defections from opposition parties, including those of former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and several National Assembly members. Ologunagba argued that these defections are not indicative of genuine political support but are instead a result of coercion and a misguided attempt to create a one-party state.

“When you find the president of a country in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural country like Nigeria declaring his preference for a one-party state, that shows that they continue to aggressively attack the processes of other political parties,” Ologunagba stated. He emphasized that the APC’s focus on defections is a distraction from its governance record, which will be the true determinant in the upcoming elections.

This warning comes amid the APC’s official endorsement of President Tinubu for re-election in 2027, despite ongoing criticisms of his administration’s economic reforms and handling of security issues. While the APC touts these reforms as revitalizing the economy, many Nigerians have expressed concerns over the resulting cost-of-living crisis.

As the 2027 elections approach, the PDP’s message is clear: the electorate will be evaluating the APC based on its performance in office, not the number of politicians it can attract from other parties.

Leaders from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Bagwai, including Alhaji Salisu Garba Bagwai and Alhaji Masa’ud Badau, have expressed support for the initiative, stating that it will help resolve long-standing disputes over grazing areas and promote peace in the region. #KanoState #BagwaiLG #GrazingReserves #FarmingBan #HerdersAndFarmers

  • JUST IN: Reps Propose ₦5M Fine or 7-Year Jail Term for Bribe Takers — “No More Business as Usual”

In a bold legislative move, the Nigerian House of Representatives is considering a bill that would slam anyone caught collecting bribes with a seven-year jail term or a ₦5 million fine. The proposed law, if passed, would mark one of the most aggressive anti-corruption penalties ever tabled in the country’s National Assembly.

    What the Bill Proposes:
    • A 7-year prison sentence OR
    • A ₦5,000,000 fine (or both in some cases)
…for individuals convicted of soliciting or receiving bribes in any form—cash, gifts, or favors.

The proposal comes amid increasing frustration among Nigerians over the normalization of bribery across all sectors—from police checkpoints and hospitals to courts and public offices.

Many see corruption not as the exception but the rule, with even basic services often requiring “something for the boys.”

According to lawmakers backing the bill, the aim is not just punishment but deterrence.

“We want to send a strong message,” one lawmaker said during plenary. “Bribery is no longer business as usual.”

Reactions online have been swift and divided.

While many citizens welcomed the bill, saying it’s long overdue, others questioned its feasibility in a system where bribery is deeply rooted—and often protected by those in power.

“Nice law, but who go arrest the people collecting the bribe when the arresting officer sef dey collect him own?” a user tweeted.

Others argued that the bill should also aggressively go after those offering bribes—not just those receiving them.

    Real Change or Political Posturing?
Analysts are skeptical about the practical enforcement of the bill, noting that similar anti-corruption laws exist but are rarely applied to the powerful. Without a strong and independent judiciary, many fear this new law could end up as another “paper tiger.”

Still, the symbolic weight of the bill sends a message: the National Assembly wants to be seen doing something about Nigeria’s corruption crisis.
