“This Is Not Democracy!” — Peter Obi Blasts Tinubu’s Government Over Rising Suffering, Insecurity & Economic Collapse

On Democracy Day, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi delivered a scathing critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of hypocrisy, failed leadership, and playing politics while Nigerians suffer.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on June 12, Obi honored MKO Abiola and other democracy heroes, but lamented that today’s Nigeria is far from their vision.

“Even though the current president fought for democracy, what we have now cannot be called a democracy,” Obi declared.

From rising poverty and record hunger levels, to a crippled healthcare system and ballooning national debt, Obi painted a grim picture of life under the Tinubu-led government:

🔹 Poverty rate soared from 38.9% in 2023 to 54%
🔹 Health care collapse: Less than 10% of PHCs functional
🔹 Food insecurity & mental health crisis now rampant
🔹 N188 trillion debt, with no tangible results
🔹 Electricity tariffs up, while Nigerians “pay more for darkness”

“Governance is now remote-controlled from abroad,” Obi said, urging President Tinubu to connect with the real suffering of Nigerians by visiting communities himself.

He emphasized the need to restore security in rural areas to revive agriculture and unlock the economy.

“Do not give up on Nigeria,” Obi encouraged citizens. “But it’s time for leadership to meet the people’s needs — not just political ambition.”
