Nigeria at 26: Governors Applaud Democratic Strides, Push for Economic Reforms

As Nigeria celebrates 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has commended the nation's progress, highlighting milestones achieved under civilian rule.

In a recent statement, the Forum praised the leadership of Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang for their transformative actions. Zulum’s targeted infrastructure initiatives and Mutfwang’s strategic use of gubernatorial pardons were cited as examples of responsive and people-focused governance.

The celebrations also stirred national conversations around economic development. Leading newspapers, including The Nation, echoed calls for:

  • Streamlined ECOWAS insurance frameworks to ease cross-border trade

  • Improvements in Nigeria’s Fitch credit rating to attract investment

  • Expanded scholarship opportunities to empower the next generation

  • Targeted business policies aimed at boosting local enterprises

These recommendations reflect a broader desire to align Nigeria’s political stability with tangible economic and social advancement.

As the country moves forward, the spotlight remains on leadership that delivers — not just on promises, but on policies that impact lives.
