• FG, Senate Leaders Head to Washington to Stop US Sanctions Over Christian Genocide.

Top officials of the Federal Government and the National Assembly are set to travel to Washington D.C. in a diplomatic move to stop possible United States sanctions over alleged persecution and genocide of Christians in Nigeria.

The high-powered delegation, which includes federal lawmakers, senior military officers, and heads of security agencies, will meet with members of the U.S. Congress to clarify Nigeria’s position and counter the growing narrative of “Christian genocide.”

The trip follows an urgent resolution by the 10th Senate, sponsored by Senator Ali Ndume, who urged the government to “put the record straight” and prevent sanctions against the country.

According to sources, the delegation will present evidence to prove that the security crisis in Nigeria is not religiously motivated but rather a result of terrorism, banditry, and communal conflicts. The team is expected to depart Abuja early next week.

In recent months, U.S. lawmakers and advocacy groups have increased pressure on Nigeria over rising attacks on Christian communities. Senator Ted Cruz recently accused Nigeria of “mass murder” of Christians and introduced the “Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025” (S.2747).

The proposed bill seeks to list Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” a move that could trigger travel bans, arms restrictions, and other economic sanctions.

The Nigerian Senate had earlier dismissed the genocide allegations as “false and dangerous,” warning that such claims could damage the country’s image and inflame religious tensions.

Lawmakers maintained that the ongoing violence is complex and tied to criminality and resource struggles, not state-backed religious persecution.

Data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) shows that between January 2020 and September 2025, over 11,800 civilian attacks were recorded in Nigeria. Among them, 385 incidents involved Christian victims, while 196 targeted Muslims, reflecting the widespread nature of insecurity across regions.

  • Trump Calls Colombian President Petro ‘Illegal Drug Dealer’, Halts U.S. Aid To South American Country.

Trump accused President Petro of actively encouraging drug production across Colombia, describing the practice as a major threat to the United States.

U.S. President Donald J. Trump, in a social media post on Sunday, referred to Colombian President Gustavo Petro as “an illegal drug dealer” who is “low rated and very unpopular.”

Trump accused President Petro of actively encouraging drug production across Colombia, describing the practice as a major threat to the United States.

Trump claimed that drug cultivation in both large and small fields has become Colombia’s “biggest business by far” and accused Petro of failing to stop it despite significant U.S. financial support.

The president announced that, effective immediately, the United States would no longer make any payments or provide subsidies to Colombia.

“President Gustavo Petro, of Columbia, is an illegal drug leader strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs, in big and small fields, all over Columbia,” Trump wrote.

“It has become the biggest business in Columbia, by far, and Petro does nothing to stop it, despite large scale payments and subsidies from the USA that are nothing more than a long term rip off of America. AS OF TODAY, THESE PAYMENTS, OR ANY OTHER FORM OF PAYMENT, OR SUBSIDIES, WILL NO LONGER BE MADE TO COLUMBIA.”

Trump warned that if the Colombian government did not take immediate action to shut down the drug fields, the United States would intervene directly.

“The purpose of this drug production is the sale of massive amounts of product into the United States, causing death, destruction, and havoc,” he said.

“Petro, a low rated and very unpopular leader, with a fresh mouth toward America, better close up these killing fields immediately, or the United States will close them up for him, and it won't be done nicely.”

Earlier on Sunday, President Petro accused the U.S. government of carrying out an assassination and demanded answers following the latest American strike in Caribbean waters.

The U.S., however, confirmed on Saturday that it was repatriating two survivors of the attack to Colombia and Ecuador.

This marked the sixth U.S. strike in the region since early September, which has reportedly killed at least 29 people. Washington maintains that the strikes are targeting alleged drug traffickers.

  • Israel Halts Gaza Aid, Launches New Strikes After Accusing Hamas Of Violating Ceasefire.

Israel has launched a new wave of air strikes in southern Gaza and suspended humanitarian aid deliveries into the territory, accusing Hamas of carrying out attacks in “blatant violation” of the ongoing ceasefire agreement.

An Israeli military spokesperson confirmed late Sunday that the strikes targeted what the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) described as “terrorist infrastructure” in Rafah and other parts of southern Gaza.

“Hamas carried out multiple attacks against Israeli forces beyond the yellow line, the area our troops have withdrawn to in accordance with phase one of the US-brokered deal,” the spokesperson said.

“This is a bold violation of the ceasefire, and we will respond firmly.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly ordered defence and security officials to “act forcefully against terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip.”

In a swift response, Hamas denied any involvement in the alleged attacks and accused Israel of breaking the agreement.

“We affirm our full commitment to implementing everything that was agreed upon, foremost among which is the ceasefire in all areas of the Gaza Strip,” Hamas said in a statement.

“We are unaware of any events or clashes taking place in the Rafah area… Contact with our remaining groups there has been cut off since the resumption of war in March of this year.”

  • Abducted Kwara Businessman Freed After N110 Million Ransom Payment.

A businessman identified as Suleiman Ndana, popularly known as “Manager,” who was abducted last month from Tsaragi community in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, has regained his freedom following the payment of a ₦110 million ransom just hours before a military rescue operation.

Sources close to the victim confirmed that Ndana was among those recovered by Nigerian Army troops during a raid on the kidnappers’ hideout on Friday. A friend of the businessman disclosed that the abductors had issued grave threats as military pressure mounted in the forest where they were hiding, vowing to kill Ndana if the ransom was not paid immediately.

Under the intense ultimatum, his family and associates reportedly delivered the ₦110 million ransom at an undisclosed location. Shortly after the payment, soldiers stormed the area, leading to Ndana’s release.

His freedom marks a breakthrough for the ongoing military operation tagged Operation FANSAN YAMMA in Kwara North, even as it underscores the moral dilemma faced by families forced to negotiate with kidnappers under life-threatening circumstances.

Meanwhile, residents of Patigi Local Government Area recently staged mass protests over the worsening insecurity in Kwara North. Youths, elders, and community leaders took to the streets demanding urgent government intervention, alleging that persistent killings and abductions had crippled economic life and driven medical personnel out of local hospitals.

Protesters accused the state government and federal representatives of neglect, citing the exodus of doctors from Patigi General Hospital and the growing presence of suspected armed herders in rural settlements. They called on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to deploy more security forces and relocate Kara Market, which they claim has become a hotspot for criminal activity.

The protesters warned that without swift action, insecurity could lead to total economic collapse in parts of Kwara North, lamenting that millions are lost daily to ransom payments, farm attacks, and the loss of livelihoods.

  • Ayurvedic Detoxification Techniques: The Science of Panchakarma
In today’s fast-paced world, it's easy to overlook what our body tries to tell us. Fatigue, digestive issues, bloating, poor sleep, brain fog, and low immunity—these are often signs that the body is overloaded with toxins. Ayurveda, India’s ancient healing system, believes that health begins with cleansing the body and mind from accumulated impurities, also known as Ama. One of the most powerful detoxification methods in Ayurveda is Panchakarma—a structured therapeutic process that restores balance, removes toxins, and rejuvenates the body from the cellular level.
    Understanding Toxins in Ayurveda
Before diving into Panchakarma, it's important to understand Ama, the Ayurvedic concept of toxins. Ama forms when our Agni (digestive fire) becomes weak due to irregular eating, unhealthy food choices, lack of sleep, stress, or exposure to chemicals. Over time, these toxins clog body channels (srotas), disrupt dosha balance, and give rise to illness. Ayurvedic detoxification is not just about weight loss or cleansing the stomach—it is about purifying the entire body system and restoring harmony.

    What Is Panchakarma?
The term Panchakarma translates to “five actions” or “five therapies”. These therapies are designed to eliminate deep-seated toxins from the tissues and expel them from the body in a controlled, scientific way. Panchakarma is unique because it doesn’t just detox the gut—it addresses toxins in every tissue layer, bringing equilibrium to Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas.
    Three Phases of Panchakarma Detox
Panchakarma is not a single treatment—it’s a carefully planned healing journey that happens in three phases:
    1. Purva Karma (Preparation Phase)
This step prepares the body to release toxins.
Snehana (Internal and External Oleation): Herbal oils or ghee are used to loosen toxins stored in tissues.

Swedana (Herbal Steam Therapy): Steam and herbs help liquefy toxins and move them toward the digestive tract for elimination.

    2. Pradhana Karma (Main Detox Procedures)
This phase includes the five core cleansing techniques:
    Technique
    Procedure
    Target
    Vamana
    Therapeutic emesis
Removes excess Kapha and mucus from chest/stomach
    Virechana
    Controlled purgation
Cleanses liver and intestines, reduces Pitta
    Basti
    Medicated enemas
    Balances Vata and nourishes colon
    Nasya
    Herbal drops in nostrils
Clears head, sinuses, improves mental clarity
    Rakta Mokshana
    Blood cleansing
Removes toxins from blood, improves immunity

    3. Paschat Karma (Rejuvenation Phase)
After detox, the body needs nourishment and stability. This includes:
Diet correction (Pathya): Light, healing foods to rebuild digestion

Rasayana (Rejuvenative herbs): Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Amla for strength and vitality

Lifestyle guidance: Daily routines to maintain detox benefits

    Benefits of Panchakarma
Panchakarma offers a complete reset for body and mind. Some proven benefits include:
    Improves digestion and metabolism
    Enhances nutrient absorption
    Boosts immunity and vitality
    Supports hormonal balance
    Reduces chronic fatigue and stress
    Relieves joint and muscle stiffness
    Clears skin and improves glow
Promotes mental clarity and emotional balance
Addresses chronic conditions like arthritis, sinusitis, IBS, and migraines
    Panchakarma Is Personalized Medicine
One of the biggest strengths of Panchakarma is that it is highly personalized. Unlike generic detox programs, Ayurvedic detox is planned after analyzing:
    Your dominant Dosha

    Prakriti (body constitution)

    Health condition

    Age and strength

    Season and lifestyle

That’s why Panchakarma must be done under trained Ayurvedic supervision. Self-detox without guidance may disturb dosha balance rather than help it.
Simple Daily Detox According to Ayurveda
If full Panchakarma therapy is not feasible, you can incorporate small Ayurvedic detox habits daily:
Begin mornings with warm water and lemon or ginger

Include Triphala at night for gentle colon cleansing

Use turmeric and cumin in cooking for natural detox

Eat fresh, cooked meals instead of packaged or reheated food

    Avoid overeating and late-night meals

Practice oil pulling to detox the mouth

Take 10–15 minutes of self-abhyanga (oil massage) weekly

Practice pranayama or meditation to detox the mind

    Final Thought
The beauty of Panchakarma lies not only in cleansing the body but also in rejuvenating the spirit. It teaches that detoxification is not just about fasting or flushing—it’s about restoring balance, enhancing energy, and reconnecting with natural health. As lifestyle diseases keep rising, this ancient detox science offers a soothing yet powerful path to holistic wellbeing.
If done with discipline and the right guidance, Panchakarma can transform your health from the inside out—naturally and sustainably.

The demonstration, which began around 10:00 a.m. on Friday, was led by the Take It Back Movement and several other civil society groups.

Protesters began converging as early as 7:30 a.m. at Ikeja Bridge before proceeding towards Alausa, carrying placards with inscriptions such as ‘Stop the Demolitions’ and ‘End Hunger Now’.

The groups accused the state government of worsening hardship through what they described as “anti-poor” policies, citing the demolitions in Oworonshoki and other parts of Lagos that have displaced families without alternative housing or adequate notice.

Security operatives, including police officers and personnel of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, have been deployed around the Alausa axis to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

As of the time of filing this report, the protesters had reached the Secretariat area, chanting solidarity songs and demanding to meet with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu or his representatives.

  • “Contradictions Everywhere!” — Lere Olayinka Blasts Sahara Reporters Over Conflicting Claims on Minister Wale Edun’s Health

Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticized Sahara Reporters over what he described as inconsistent and misleading reports about the health of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.

In a post shared on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, Olayinka accused the online media outlet of publishing contradictory narratives regarding the minister’s alleged health crisis and recent travel activities.

He pointed out that Sahara Reporters had initially published a story on Sunday alleging that Minister Edun suffered a severe stroke, was incapacitated, and had been flown abroad for urgent medical treatment. However, just days later, the same platform reported that Edun had traveled from Abuja to Lagos on Monday via a commercial flight, and later departed for London that same day—also via a commercial airline.

Olayinka questioned the credibility of such reports, highlighting the logical inconsistency between the two stories.

“Sowore’s Sahara Desert said that the Minister can no longer use his hands and legs. Now, could a Minister of Finance, a public figure, who suffered STROKE and can no longer use his legs and hands have traveled from Abuja to Lagos via COMMERCIAL FLIGHT and also to London via another Commercial Flight and no one saw him to take his pictures?”

He argued that it was implausible for someone allegedly suffering from a debilitating stroke to manage two commercial flights in one day without any eyewitness accounts or photographic evidence emerging.

The post, which quickly gained traction online, was widely seen as an attempt to discredit Sahara Reporters and defend the integrity of the Tinubu administration amidst public concern over the minister’s condition.

While Olayinka’s statement came amid confirmation that Edun had indeed traveled to the United Kingdom for medical care, it reinforced doubts about the accuracy of earlier sensational reports claiming the minister was in critical condition.

According to official sources, Edun’s trip to London followed a brief domestic flight from Abuja to Lagos on Monday night. Though the Presidency had earlier stated that the minister was “indisposed but recuperating” in Abuja, the confirmed travel abroad suggested he was seeking advanced medical attention.

However, the key point of contention remains Sahara Reporters’ conflicting reports—one depicting a dire health emergency and the other narrating an unassisted commercial journey abroad.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has shared an inspiring story about how a brief encounter with a young man on a commercial flight years ago turned into a life-changing act of generosity.

Speaking during a recent event, Akpabio narrated that while he was serving as a governor and frequently flying on commercial aircraft, a young man who had always wanted to meet him finally got the chance when he was assigned as part of the flight crew on one of his trips.

“At about 35,000 feet, he came dressed in his uniform and said to me, ‘Your Excellency, if this plane should crash now, some of you will die as rich men, and some of us will die as poor men,’” Akpabio recalled. “I asked him, ‘How do you want to die as a rich man or a poor man?’ He said, ‘I’d like to die as a rich man.’”

The Senate President said the young man then explained that he had gained admission into an aviation school in the United States but could not afford the fees.

“When we landed, I told him to leave the aircraft and follow me,” Akpabio said. “According to him, not from my mouth, the first money I gave him was about $85,000. Later, he brought two of his friends, and I did the same for them. Their lives changed completely.”

Akpabio noted that the young man, who is now doing very well and has a family, recently shared the story in an interview with media personality Daddy Freeze.

“Someone stumbled on the video on Instagram and brought it to show me,” Akpabio added. “If he is listening to me tonight, tell him I would like to see him so that I can pay him back some of the money.”

  • Church of Nigeria Declares Spiritual Independence Over Appointment of New Pro-Gay Female Archbishop of Canterbury.

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has formally declared its spiritual independence from the Church of England following the appointment of Bishop Sarah Mullally as the new Archbishop of Canterbury.

In a statement issued by the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, the Most Rev’d Henry C. Ndukuba, the Church described the announcement made on Friday, October 3, 2025, as “devastating” and “insensitive.”

According to the statement, the decision represents a “double jeopardy” for the faith: “First, it disregards the conviction of the majority of Anglicans who cannot accept female headship in the episcopate; and second, it is deeply troubling that Bishop Sarah Mullally is a strong supporter of same-sex marriage.”

The Church recalled Bishop Mullally’s 2023 remarks after the Church of England approved blessings for same-s+x couples, when she described the move as “a moment of hope.”

The Nigerian Church said such views further d+mage efforts to preserve unity within the Anglican Communion.

“It remains unclear how someone who upholds same-sex marriage can hope to heal the already fractured fabric of the Communion,” the statement added, describing the situation as evidence that global Anglicanism could no longer accept the moral and spiritual leadership of the Church of England.

Reaffirming its alignment with the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON), the Church of Nigeria said it would continue to uphold biblical authority, the historic creeds, evangelism, and holy living—“irrespective of the ongoing revisionist agenda.”

The statement concluded with a call for conservative Anglicans in England and beyond to stand firm in defending scriptural truth.

“We encourage all faithful brothers and sisters in the Church of England who have resisted the aberration called same-sex marriage to continue contending for the faith once delivered to the saints (Jude 1:3),” the Church said.

  • Atiku’s Aide Fires Back at Oshiomhole: “You’re Consumed by Fear and Hate”

Paul Ibe, media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has fired back at Senator Adams Oshiomhole over his recent comments describing Atiku as being “consumed by politics.”

Oshiomhole made the remark during an appearance on Channels Television over the weekend while reacting to Atiku’s criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s trip to Plateau State for the burial of the mother of APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda.

Atiku had slammed Tinubu for showing “a lack of empathy” toward Nigerians facing killings across the country while attending a social event.

    Responding, Oshiomhole said:

“I have sympathy for Atiku. He has allowed himself to be consumed by politics.”

But in a swift and fiery response on Tuesday, Paul Ibe accused Oshiomhole of hypocrisy and fear of Atiku’s political influence.

Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Ibe wrote:

“I have sympathy for Oshiomhole. He is tailoring sycophancy with a designer touch and has allowed himself to be consumed by the hate and fear of @atiku.”

The exchange has since ignited reactions online, with many Nigerians weighing in on the ongoing political rivalry between the camps of Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu.

He insisted that having bagged a BSc. degree in Microbiology/Biochemistry with second class honours (lower division) in 1985, the university had no right to continue to hold back his academic laurel.

His plea came on a day the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja fixed November 10 to hear the suit the minister filed against the university, and the presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP, in 2023 election, Peter Obi, asked the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and other relevant agencies to verify certificates submitted by candidates running for public office to prevent people with questionable backgrounds from being elected.

The minister, who is accused of forging the certificate he submitted to the government upon his appointment in 2023, defended himself through his spokesman, Dr. Robert Ngwu, at a media briefing in Abuja yesterday.

Nnaji accused the university authorities of trying to dent his image by issuing two conflicting reports regarding his certificate, all in a bid to satisfy a governor who wanted him out of office so as to enhance his political position. At the briefing, he tendered the graduation brochure with his name as Nnaji Uchenna G and picture, along with other graduads in the 1985 set and another letter issued to him by the Registrar, Dr. Mrs. Celine Ngozi Nnebedum, showing he was admitted in 1981 and graduated in 1985.

Asked how the name Nnaji Uchenna G written in his graduation brochure and Geoffrey Uchechukwu Nnaji, which the Registrar wrote as the person who graduated in 1985 could be taken to mean the same thing, he said it did not matter as many Igbo names meant the same thing.

  • Certificate Scandal: Enugu Govt Distances Itself as Minister Uche Nnaji Faces Tough Questions Over Alleged Forgery
The Enugu State Government has strongly denied any involvement in the escalating certificate forgery scandal surrounding the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, calling on him to take responsibility and address the allegations personally.

The controversy deepened after Nnaji’s media aide, Robert Ngwu, accused Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah of masterminding a smear campaign against his principal. Ngwu, at a press conference in Abuja, dismissed reports that Nnaji forged his University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and NYSC certificates, describing them as “politically motivated lies.”

“All these sponsored attacks are being coordinated by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State. The governor has given a new name to all his problems — Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji,” Ngwu alleged.

However, Governor Mbah swiftly rebutted the claims through his aides, urging the minister to face his own issues.

“Carry your cross,” Mbah said, stressing that his administration had no hand in the matter.

    University Disowns Minister’s Certificate

The scandal stems from a Premium Times investigation revealing that UNN disowned Nnaji’s academic certificate. According to the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, though Nnaji was admitted in 1981, there were no records showing that he graduated in 1985 as claimed.

“From our records, we cannot confirm that Mr. Geoffrey Uchechukwu Nnaji graduated from the University of Nigeria in July 1985,” Ortuanya said in a Freedom of Information response.

This contradicted an earlier letter from UNN’s Registrar, Celine Nnebedum, who had initially confirmed Nnaji’s graduation but later recanted, stating that his name was missing from the official list.

    Legal Battle and Missing Records

Nnaji has since taken legal action against the Minister of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and UNN, accusing them of withholding his transcript despite a court order.

Ngwu alleged that the minister’s academic file was being “kept under lock and key” in the Vice-Chancellor’s office, suggesting foul play.

He also downplayed concerns about discrepancies in Nnaji’s names, insisting that “Uchenna” and “Uchechukwu” are interchangeable in Igbo culture.

    ‘Carry Your Cross’

In a strongly worded statement, Enugu’s Director of Information, Chukwuemeka Nebo, dismissed Nnaji’s claims, saying the minister must answer to the allegations directly.

“The honourable minister must carry his own cross and clear his name before Nigerians instead of dragging the Enugu State Government into issues that are entirely personal to him,” Nebo said.

He criticized Nnaji for sending aides to address the media instead of speaking for himself, describing it as an attempt to “run from accountability.”

“Why invite journalists and then fail to show up? If he truly has nothing to hide, he should face the press and explain,” Nebo added.

Nebo went on to list several inconsistencies that demand clarification — including claims that Nnaji failed key university courses, presented questionable NYSC documents, and submitted only his WASC certificate to INEC during the 2023 governorship race.

He also questioned the authenticity of the NYSC discharge certificate, which bore the signature of Col. Animashaun Braimoh, who only became NYSC Director-General two years after Nnaji’s supposed service year.

“If the minister himself swore in an affidavit that UNN never issued him a certificate, Nigerians deserve to know how he obtained the one he presented to the Senate,” Nebo stated.

As calls for transparency grow, both the public and media are urging Minister Nnaji to address the controversy head-on. The Enugu Government maintains it has no hand in the saga, emphasizing that the truth must come directly from the minister himself.

“These are questions Nigerians are asking,” Nebo concluded. “If Chief Nnaji is innocent, let him come forward and prove it.”

  • “Tinubu Must Be Judged by His Own Promise” — Analyst Warns President Over Unfulfilled Power Sector Pledge

A political affairs analyst, Destiny Enabulele, has raised serious concerns over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unfulfilled campaign promise to fix Nigeria’s power sector, warning that the failure could cost him re-election in 2027.

Speaking on Trust TV News on Monday, Enabulele reminded Nigerians of Tinubu’s 2023 campaign declaration, where he boldly vowed to deliver stable electricity nationwide within his first four years — and urged voters to reject him if he failed to deliver.

“President Tinubu said if he cannot provide stable electricity within four years, Nigerians shouldn’t vote for him again,” Enabulele recalled. “Almost two years into his term, even Abuja suffers epileptic power supply. How then will he campaign for re-election?”

The analyst noted that despite heavy investments and reforms, Nigeria’s power crisis remains unresolved, with citizens enduring frequent blackouts and businesses relying on generators to survive.

Enabulele cautioned that the President’s credibility and political capital are at stake if tangible progress isn’t made soon, stressing that Nigerians are more politically aware than ever before.

“We are no longer in an era where campaign promises are forgotten. Nigerians will remember what was said when it’s time to vote,” he warned.

Power supply remains one of the nation’s biggest challenges, with grid collapses, corruption, and regulatory inefficiencies crippling progress despite numerous interventions.

Enabulele emphasized that Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda must reflect in the energy sector, which he described as “the backbone of Nigeria’s economic revival.”

“The President himself invited us to judge him by his performance in this sector. Accountability must start from the top,” he added.

  • ABU Spends just ₦4 Billion Yearly on Electricity — VC Cries Out Over Soaring Bills.

The Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Adamu Ahmed, has revealed that the institution spends nearly ₦4 billion yearly on electricity, describing the situation as crippling and unsustainable.

Speaking at a news conference marking ABU’s 63rd anniversary, Ahmed said the heavy energy cost was affecting research and academic activities. He disclosed that the university was pursuing energy self-sufficiency through partnerships and innovations, including renewable energy projects.

According to him, the Federal Government had provided ₦1 billion through TETFund and approved a 10-megawatt solar power project, while alumni groups, such as the SBS Class of 1975, were already supporting solar initiatives on campus.

The VC lamented that insecurity and poverty continued to hinder education and development in the North, urging renewed research in agriculture and peacebuilding. He noted ABU’s strength in agricultural research, with institutes like IAR and NAPRI leading regional innovation.

Ahmed also highlighted the university’s growth from four faculties in 1962 to 18 faculties, 110 departments, and 17 research centres making it the largest university in sub-Saharan Africa.

He announced that ABU had been ranked the best public university in Nigeria by Times Higher Education in 2025 and is one of three Nigerian universities listed in the QS World University Rankings.

The VC further revealed that the university had secured over $15 million in World Bank Centres of Excellence grants and a €5 million Horizon grant for an AI-driven disease diagnosis project. Staff and students have also registered over 30 patents across renewable energy and pharmaceuticals.

Despite these successes, Ahmed warned that funding shortages, brain drain, and infrastructure decay remained major challenges. He urged ABU’s alumni to “give back” through endowments and donations, saying, “The Sardauna gave you opportunities; now it’s time to give back.”

  • Experts, residents alarmed as flooding worsens along Lekki-Ajah corridor.

Some residents and environmental experts have raised alarm over persistent flooding along the Lekki–Ajah corridor in Lagos, blaming land reclamation, ocean surge, and unregulated development.

In separate interviews, residents recounted distressing experiences of flash floods disrupting life, damaging property, and causing panic in coastal communities.

    Flooded highway in Lekki, Lagos
Mr. Mike Umukoro, a Lekki resident, said rainfall now triggers fear among residents because of the intensity and duration of flash floods.

“Each time it rains, anxiety grips everyone. The roads become impassable, vehicles get trapped, and homes are threatened,” he said.

Similarly, Mrs. Ese Edema, a Lekki Phase 1 resident, described the panic caused by recent heavy rainfall.

“During the last downpour, I couldn’t reach my son’s school. Some parents accessed theirs only around midnight when the flood subsided,” she said.

She added that traffic gridlock from the flood extended to Victoria Island.

Another resident, Mr. Marvel Adeniran, blamed reckless developers for worsening the flooding.
