The families urged the former president to lead by example by ensuring either the release of the detained workers or the speedy conclusion of their long-running trial.

The families lamented the slow pace of the case, noting that while the detainees are reportedly in good health, the prolonged detention has caused severe emotional and economic hardship. They expressed hope that the case would be concluded early in 2026, stressing that justice delayed continues to punish innocent families.

Their reaction followed Jonathan’s New Year message in which he acknowledged Nigeria’s economic hardship and insecurity, urged leaders to adopt people-oriented governance, and called for leadership anchored on humility, integrity and service to the people.

The controversy has once again drawn attention to the case of 15 domestic workers accused of stealing jewellery allegedly worth hundreds of millions of naira from Mrs. Jonathan’s residence. The defendants, who have been held at the Okaka Correctional Centre in Yenagoa since 2019, have consistently told the court that they were abducted, tortured and forced to make confessions. Some have named security personnel allegedly involved in their abuse, including claims of suspension, whipping and coercion.

Despite repeated allegations of torture and police brutality linked to the case, no security operative has been investigated or charged, further fuelling public criticism and calls for justice, accountability and the release of the detained workers.

It is not an overstatement to say that President Tinubu was created to lead our nation at a time like this. His declaration of a National Security Emergency and the powerful, actionable steps contained therein show that we finally have a leader with the political will and tactical ability to bell the cat that has proven most stubborn and elusive in the past.

For too long, we have had a numbers challenge—i.e., we did not have enough troops to physically secure a population of 235 million with a landmass of almost 1 million square kilometres.

Today, the President has provided strong leadership to address this lacuna in our national security architecture. And right-thinking Nigerians are grateful for this step to address this hateful scourge.

Already, we have seen results in the recent and decent rescue of students in Kebbi State and worshippers in Kwara State. It is certain that more Tinubu wins will come.

This recruitment into our military and paramilitary forces, along with the recall of 100,000 police officers previously on VIP protection detail, is a welcome development and step in the right direction that all Nigerians should support.

I urge our people to enlist in our Army, Airforce, Navy, Police and paramilitary agencies.

Furthermore, President Bola Tinubu taking the issue of State Police to the National Assembly in his National Emergency on Security is the most radically progressive step a Nigerian leader has done in the War on Terror since 1999. I not only commend the President, but also join in appealing to Parliament to make haste and hearken to, as well as hearten to, the President's call.

If they do this, this tenth National Assembly will be the greatest Legislature in the history of democratic governance in Nigeria.

Trump’s threat: America couldn’t do anything without our knowledge under my watch – Obasanjo.

In a veiled remark on the ongoing controversy over President Donald Trump’s military invasion threat on Nigeria, the former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday disclosed that under his watch as the Nigeria’s Head of State, late United States President Jimmy Carter would not do anything in Africa without his knowledge.

It would be recalled Trump, in a series of posts on X between October 31 and November 1, condemned continued killings in Nigeria, declaring America’s readiness to send its military to Nigeria if the Federal Government failed to stop the killings by jihadist groups, the remarks which has sparked divergent reactions from both the Federal Government and prominent Nigerian leaders and religious organizations in past weeks.

The federal government particularly rejected Trump’s allegations, insisting that the country’s insecurity affects all religious groups.

Speaking on Monday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during the Presidential Youth Mentorship Retreat (6.0) organised by the Youth Development Centre, an arm of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Obasanjo did not make a direct remark to the ongoing controversy, but he tactfully recalled how the US under Carter held Nigeria in high esteem.

Obasanjo and Cater, who died recently in December 2024, were regarded as best of friends.

In January this year, Obasanjo held a memorial service in Abeokuta in honour of Carter, where he paid glowing tributes to the late US President who died at age 100.

According to Obasanjo, right from independence, the world and indeed America saw Nigeria as Africa’s leader, saying the country lost the confidence at some point before the Muritala-Obasanjo military regime “brought it back. “

In a post on X on Thursday, Obi recounted his ongoing three-day trip to the US, which took him to Atlanta, Washington, and Chicago.

He noted that Atlanta, with a city budget of around $3 billion, generates more revenue than Nigeria’s national budget, yet its mayor, Andre Dickens, maintains a modest public profile.

Obi revealed that he travelled with Mayor Dickens on the same flight from Atlanta to Washington and observed no special treatment for the mayor.

“He boarded and disembarked like every other passenger, without aides carrying bags, announcements, sirens, or entourages,” Obi said.

He further contrasted this with Nigeria, stating: “In Nigeria, governors—most of whom oversee budgets smaller than Atlanta’s—and even local government chairmen, whose allocations are less than 1% of Atlanta’s, would have constituted a public nuisance with sirens, protocol officers, endless announcements, large entourages, and posters everywhere.”

Obi argued that Nigerian leaders must change their public conduct and focus on service delivery, pointing to Dickens’ priorities of crime reduction, youth empowerment, and a minimum wage of $15 per hour for council workers as examples of effective, humble leadership.

AGG Slams APC League of Professionals Over Attacks on Primate Ayodele

The Alliance for Good Governance (AGG) has strongly criticized the APC League of Professionals (ALP) over its recent response to Primate Elijah Ayodele’s prophecies concerning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing ALP’s position as “a shameful display of ignorance, misinformation, and falsehood.”

In a statement signed by its president, Sola Johnson, AGG accused ALP of embarrassing itself by sponsoring media publications against the cleric, who has consistently issued spiritual counsel and warnings to Nigerian leaders.

“Day in and day out, the man of God is criticized for his prophecies, but this particular one by ALP is laughable. It reeks of ignorance, misunderstanding, and drunken misinformation. For a group that claims to be professionals, they have only succeeded in presenting themselves like stark illiterates and rumour peddlers,” Johnson said.


He dismissed as false and fabricated the claim that Primate Ayodele told President Tinubu not to contest in the 2027 elections.

“How can someone who has been advising on strategies that could make the president win or lose suddenly tell him not to contest? It is embarrassing that ALP would stoop so low to concoct lies,” he added.

On Prophecies About Trump and the Economy

Responding to Ayodele’s caution that Tinubu should be careful in his dealings with former U.S. President Donald Trump, AGG insisted the advice was both timely and crucial.

“This is a prophecy the president himself should take note of to make informed decisions. What exactly is paining this amateur group in this message? They are clearly more interested in attacking the prophet than protecting the president’s interest,” the group noted.

AGG also condemned ALP’s stance that prophets should not speak on economic matters, describing it as “evidence of serious illiteracy.”

“The Bible itself is full of examples where men of God shaped national economies. Joseph’s foresight saved Egypt from famine, Elijah foretold economic recovery in Israel. To say a prophet cannot speak on the economy is shallow reasoning,” Johnson argued.


On security matters, AGG clarified that Ayodele has expressed support for the idea of state police, but warned against its potential misuse by politicians.

The group further cautioned President Tinubu not to be swayed by groups like ALP, alleging they were more interested in undermining his administration than ensuring his success.

“This group is not after Tinubu’s success; they are after his failure. By trying to turn him against the word of God, they are pushing him toward defeat. The president must be very careful of such misguided elements,” Johnson warned.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has said that the president’s son, Seyi Tinubu, is constitutionally qualified to contest for any political office in Nigeria, including the governorship of Lagos State.

Speaking on The Clarity Zone podcast posted on YouTube on Wednesday, Bwala dismissed criticisms suggesting Seyi’s political relevance is tied solely to his father’s influence. He described him instead as a bridge-builder among Nigerian youth.

“If Seyi Tinubu’s father is the president, what stops him from running for Lagos State governor? Seyi Tinubu can even challenge his father in the next election,” Bwala said.

He praised Seyi’s character, describing him as humble and unassuming despite his privileged background as the son of a former Lagos governor and now president of Nigeria.

According to him, Seyi has cultivated long-standing friendships, supported young people in securing government opportunities, and even attracted criticism for bringing in individuals across party lines, including Obidients.

Bwala further noted that Seyi has maintained maturity by avoiding scandals or social media attacks, even though his father is one of the most heavily criticised Nigerian leaders in recent memory.

The presidential aide also revealed that his own criticisms of the Tinubu administration have never affected his relationship with Seyi, describing him as someone capable of separating politics from personal relationships.

He urged Nigerians to judge Seyi Tinubu based on personal experience rather than inherited opinions.

“Until you experience somebody, don’t have an opinion of them. Too many people inherit other people’s problems without any personal encounter,” Bwala added.

The report, it is understood, drew backlash in Abuja, with senior sources accusing the U.S. Embassy of encouraging a “smear campaign” under the guise of press freedom.

“The embassy’s actions are not only inappropriate but violate diplomatic norms,” a senior government official told reporters. “They have crossed the line into political interference.”

The Federal Government defended the governors mentioned in the article, describing Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo and Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe as models of fiscal discipline. Officials said both governors have maintained responsible budgeting, improved public services, and met workers’ salaries regularly.

Sources also alleged that the article was influenced by personal motives. According to them, the publisher of The Africa Report had earlier approached the Nigerian Governors’ Forum for sponsorship of an “Africa Roundtable” event but was turned down. The rejection, officials claim, led to strained relations and eventual negative coverage — now reportedly circulated by the U.S. Embassy.

“This isn’t journalism. It’s retaliation disguised as reporting, and the U.S. Mission’s role in spreading it is unacceptable,” a government source said.
