Trump Warns of Possible U.S. Military Action in Nigeria Over Christian Killings

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to Nigeria, threatening potential military intervention if the government fails to halt what he calls the ongoing killing of Christians by Islamist militants.

In a statement posted on his Truth Social account, Trump said:

“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country ‘guns-a-blazing’ to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”

He further instructed the U.S. Department of Defense to prepare for “possible action,” adding:

“If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet.”

The remarks came just a day after Trump designated Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” over what he described as the mass killing of Christians, warning that the country faces “an existential threat.”

“Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter,” he wrote, while directing Congressman Riley Moore and House Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole to investigate the issue.

Nigeria Responds

In a swift reaction, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu denied claims that Nigeria discriminates against Christians, insisting the nation remains committed to religious freedom and peaceful coexistence.

“The characterization of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality,” Tinubu said in a statement he personally signed. “Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty.”

Tinubu noted that since assuming office in 2023, his administration has worked closely with both Christian and Muslim leaders to address security challenges affecting citizens “across faiths and regions.”

“Religious freedom and tolerance are core to our identity,” he affirmed. “Our administration remains committed to working with the U.S. and the international community to protect communities of all faiths.”
