Akpabio: Why Opposition Parties Will Never Unite

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said opposition parties in Nigeria are unlikely to unite if they continue to attack everything about President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on Friday during the commissioning of the newly constructed Left-Hand Service Carriageway in Abuja, Akpabio echoed sentiments expressed by President Tinubu during his June 12 Democracy Day address, where the president denied plans to eliminate opposition but remarked that their internal divisions work in the APC’s favour.

Akpabio emphasized that the opposition must take responsibility for their own disunity, saying:

“Try and put your houses together before the next election so that nobody would accuse anybody of trying to stifle the opposition.
But if you expect me, as a representative of the president and as Senate President, to chair over your troubles and bring unity, I won’t do that.
You’ll never come together when you continue to tell lies every day and criticise everything. Was Nigeria like this in 1960? Was Abuja like this three years ago?”

The event was attended by notable figures, including former PDP governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Ayo Fayose.

The disarray within the main opposition parties—PDP and Labour Party—continues to deepen, with court battles and leadership tussles weakening efforts to build a united front. Recent defections by Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno to the APC further underline the growing cracks in the opposition.

Also speaking at the event, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike dismissed the proposed coalition led by opposition leaders Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai.

“Coalition that was born and died the same day,” Wike said mockingly.
“Till now, they haven’t even agreed on who leads. Is it the left or the right?”

Wike advised Abuja residents to vote wisely in the next general elections, warning against trusting uncertain political formations.
