  • Troops Recover Large Cache of 12.7mm Ammunition War Heads as Sustained Security Operations Continue

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have uncovered a significant cache of high-calibre ammunition in the Bulumkutu Railway general area in Maiduguri.

In a statement signed by the Media Information Officer Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba says the recovery followed a sustained presence and follow-up actions after a recent cordon-and-search operation, conducted on the basis of actionable intelligence with multiple suicide bombers either neutralised or captured in the last week

At about 3:00 p.m. on 2 January 2026, troops received a distress call reporting the discovery of suspicious metallic objects inside a drainage channel in the Bulumkutu Railway area, upon their response a 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition warheads, some live 12.7mm round, as well as power banks concealed inside the drainage were recovered.

No casualties or unusual incidents were recorded during the operation. The general security situation remains calm and vigilance is being maintained in view of the unpredictable nature of the threat environment.

HQ OPHK once again urges members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious items or movements to security agencies, as collective responsibility remains key to sustaining peace and security in the North East.

  • Tinubu Vows Stronger International Security Cooperation in 2026 to Eliminate Terrorists, Boost Peace, and Safeguard Nigeria’s Sovereignty

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to eliminating terrorism and criminal threats in Nigeria through stronger collaboration with regional and global partners in 2026. In his New Year message to Nigerians, the President stressed that economic reforms and national development cannot succeed without peace, security, and stability.

Tinubu acknowledged the persistent security challenges facing the country, noting that criminal and terrorist groups continue to threaten lives and national unity. He disclosed that Nigeria has already carried out joint counter-terrorism operations with international partners, including the United States, citing the December 24 airstrikes against terrorist targets in parts of the Northwest. According to him, military operations have continued across the Northwest and Northeast to dismantle terror networks and criminal strongholds.

Looking ahead, the President said Nigeria’s security and intelligence agencies will deepen international cooperation in 2026 to eliminate all threats to national security. He reiterated the government’s resolve to protect citizens, property, and Nigeria’s territorial integrity, while also restating his support for security sector reforms such as decentralised policing and the deployment of properly regulated forest guards to combat terrorism and banditry effectively.

Beyond security, Tinubu said 2026 would mark a more robust phase of economic growth, with tangible improvements in citizens’ lives. He announced plans to accelerate the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme, aimed at empowering at least 10 million Nigerians through grassroots economic activities across the country’s 8,809 wards. The President added that investments in agriculture, trade, mining, and critical infrastructure—including roads, power, ports, railways, healthcare, and education—will continue without interruption.

Calling for unity and shared responsibility, Tinubu urged Nigerians to support nation-building efforts with patriotism and integrity. He concluded by wishing citizens a peaceful, productive, and prosperous New Year, while praying for the safety of Nigeria’s troops and the defeat of forces threatening the nation’s peace and stability.

  • Pat Utomi Slams Nigeria’s Crumbling Roads After 15-Hour Lagos–Asaba Trip, Cites Congestion, Extortion, and Infrastructure Decay

Political economist and public affairs analyst Prof. Pat Utomi has raised alarm over Nigeria’s deteriorating road infrastructure after a Lagos-to-Asaba trip stretched into a grueling 15-hour ordeal, despite no vehicle breakdowns. Utomi detailed the journey on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting that the delay was caused by crumbling roads, severe traffic congestion, and alleged extortion by security operatives along major economic corridors such as the Lagos–Benin–Asaba route.
The journey, which historically took three hours to reach Benin, now took six hours to cover the same stretch. Utomi’s account has reignited public outrage over the state of federal highways, with road users and transport operators noting the economic impact, including higher transport costs, vehicle damage, and delayed goods delivery. Critics argue that while the government pours funds into new mega-projects, critical arteries of the economy are collapsing, undermining commerce, agriculture, and interregional mobility.
Analysts also noted that Nigeria’s near-collapse of the railway system exacerbates the pressure on roads, as frequent breakdowns and limited rail coverage leave roads to bear unsustainable traffic volumes. The consequences are severe: rising transport-driven inflation, reduced productivity, increased road accidents, and widespread frustration. Experts emphasize that functioning road infrastructure is not merely a convenience but a vital component of economic survival.

  • On Sunday, December 22, 2025, thousands of students and activists in Novi Pazar, Serbia, protested against what they describe as government interference in state universities. This marked the first major student-led demonstration in the southwestern town.

The protest is part of a broader movement opposing political influence in higher education, following last year’s collapse of a railway station roof in Novi Sad that killed 16 people. Students from Novi Pazar had previously walked for days to join mass protests in Novi Sad on the anniversary of the tragedy.

Protesters demanded the resignation of the university's managing board and the election of a new rector. Participants observed a moment of silence for the victims of the roof collapse and chanted slogans like “Pump up!” while waving flags representing their towns and universities.

The movement includes students, academics, and opposition figures, who accuse President Aleksandar Vucic and his party of fostering corruption, nepotism, poor public services, and media restrictions. Vucic and his party deny these allegations.

Novi Pazar, Serbia’s youngest town demographically, has a majority Muslim population, with 60% under 30, and no clashes with Orthodox Serb neighbors have been reported since Yugoslavia’s breakup.

In China, engineers and planners are pushing forward with an ambitious plan to carve a high-speed rail line beneath the Bohai Strait, linking two bustling peninsulas through a deep, pressurised tunnel. The idea is simple: replace a six-hour trip around the sea with a fast, under-one-hour dash beneath it.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation has announced a four-day mandatory refresher training for all Abuja–Kaduna Train Service staff and confirmed a 95 per cent salary increase to be implemented before the end of 2025.

These measures were disclosed by the NRC Managing Director, Dr Kayode Opeifa, in a statement on Sunday. “The investigation re-emphasised the importance of strict adherence to operational directives, particularly caution orders,” he said. “The refresher training will ensure our staff are fully prepared to prevent safety lapses as we resume operations.”

NSIB Begins Probe Of Abuja Train Derailment, Confirms 12 Injuries The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed that 12 passengers sustained injuries out of the 583 on board the Asham train that derailed in Abuja last Tuesday. NSIB Director General, Captain Alex Badeh, said on Tuesday that an Investigator-in-Charge has been appointed to lead the probe in collaboration with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and other stakeholders. He noted that evidence-preservation measures had been taken, including securing the site and collecting CCTV footage and other critical data to determine the cause of the derailment. Badeh urged the Federal Government to address funding shortfalls to strengthen the bureau’s capacity for thorough investigations and ensure public safety. The NSIB announced that its final report will be released within 30 days of the incident and shared with the NRC, regulators, and the public. The derailment occurred along the Kaduna corridor shortly after the train departed Abuja around 11 am en route to Kaduna. Following the incident, the NRC suspended Abuja–Kaduna train operations until further notice and began processing refunds for affected passengers.
