  • Why Is Tinubu Budgeting Another ₦7bn for Aso Rock Solar While Nigerians Face Blackouts? After ₦10bn in 2025, Is the Presidency Prioritising Itself Over the National Power Crisis?

Amid worsening electricity shortages across Nigeria, the Bola Tinubu-led federal government has allocated another ₦7 billion in the 2026 budget for the solarisation of the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock, raising fresh questions about priorities, equity, and governance. The new allocation—listed by the Budget Office of the Federation under State House expenditures as “provision of solarisation of Villa with solar mini grid”—comes just a year after ₦10 billion was set aside for the same project in 2025.

The decision has reignited public debate because it contrasts sharply with the everyday reality of millions of Nigerians who continue to endure persistent blackouts, business disruptions, and rising energy costs. Critics argue that while the Presidency secures reliable power through a premium solar project, households and small enterprises remain at the mercy of an unstable national grid.

In April 2025, when the initial ₦10 billion allocation triggered public outrage, the Presidency defended the project as a long-term investment in sustainability and energy efficiency. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the move follows “global standards,” citing the White House’s use of solar power and insisting the administration was not “reinventing the wheel” but adopting a tested model for powering critical institutions. Supporters of the project also frame it as a smart hedge against grid failures and a step toward cleaner energy.

Yet the timing has kept the controversy alive. The latest budget increase coincides with a series of national grid collapses that have plunged much of the country into darkness. According to data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), one major disturbance saw total power generation crash from 2,052.37MW to just 139.92MW within one hour, leaving only three of the country’s 11 distribution companies able to take any load. At different points, major DisCos—including Eko, Ikeja, Enugu, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt and Yola—recorded zero allocation, underscoring the fragility of the system.

Independent monitoring confirmed that even hours after such collapses, national supply remained severely constrained, with total available power far below what is needed to sustain homes, hospitals, businesses, and critical services. Similar incidents in March and September 2025 followed earlier government celebrations of rising generation, only for output to plunge again below sustainable levels.

Against this backdrop, many Nigerians question whether investing billions to guarantee uninterrupted electricity for the seat of power—while the wider grid remains unreliable—signals a two-tier energy policy. Some see the solar project as an admission that government itself no longer trusts the national power system it oversees. Others argue that the Presidency’s energy security should not come at a time when ordinary citizens face daily outages, rising fuel costs for generators, and an economy already under strain.

The debate now centres on urgent questions: Is the Tinubu administration protecting Aso Rock while the country stays in the dark? Should scarce public funds be channelled first into stabilising the national grid rather than insulating the Presidency? And does repeated spending—₦17 billion across two years—reflect forward-looking sustainability or misplaced priorities in the middle of a power crisis? As Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure continues to falter, the Aso Rock solar budget has become a powerful symbol in a wider argument about leadership, accountability, and who truly benefits from government policy.

Churches across Adamawa State have abruptly cancelled their New Year crossover services following an urgent security alert issued by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over an alleged planned terrorist attack. The warning, based on what CAN described as credible intelligence from the Department of State Services (DSS), indicated that terrorists were planning to unleash violence in Yola and other parts of the state during crossover night.

In a statement signed by Rev. Dr. Joel Danjuma Manzo, CAN Chairman in Adamawa State, church leaders were directed to immediately suspend crossover services to safeguard lives. He urged pastors and congregations to treat the advisory with utmost seriousness, stressing that personal safety outweighs holding religious gatherings. • UMZA Air Launches Abuja–Ilorin Flights With Fares Up to 60% Lower Than Market Rates

UMZA Air has officially launched its Abuja–Ilorin route, offering fares between N145,000 and N180,000—about 60% lower than current market prices. The airline says the discounted rate is permanent and not a promotional offer, triggering strong early ticket demand.
The carrier plans to deploy a G-400 XR turboprop and has met all regulatory requirements of the NCAA. Analysts say UMZA’s entry could break existing fare monopolies on the route and provide long-awaited relief for travellers across Kwara, Kogi, Ekiti, and neighbouring states. The airline currently operates across Lagos, Kano, Yola, Sokoto, Maiduguri, and Kebbi, expanding affordability in domestic air travel.

  • Ex-Bank MD jailed 5 years for steahhzgyvujhbkgcling ₦32 million and sending part of it to a man.

Grace Andreas Karka, former Managing Director of Bonghe Microfinance Bank, has been sentenced to five years in prison for misappropriating N32 million from her own bank and transferring part to a man identified as Prince Moses Batalu.

Justice Benjamin Lawan Manji of the Adamawa State High Court, Yola, found Karka guilty of criminal conspiracy and ch+ating after the EFCC proved she diverted the funds between August 2020 and March 2021.

The EFCC stated that Karka moved large sums from the bank’s First Bank account (No. 201****57) to accounts linked to Batalu, who was not a bank customer. The fraud was uncovered during an internal audit, which revealed suspicious transfers and missing funds. Failed recovery attempts led the bank to report the matter to the EFCC.

During the trial, EFCC counsel presented witnesses and documents connecting Karka to the theft, while her defense called three witnesses in her favor.

Justice Manji ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, sentencing Karka to five years imprisonment, with an option of ₦3 million fine per count, to run concurrently. She was also ordered to refund N29.8 million to the bank.

The case, filed under the Adamawa State Penal Code Law of 2018, exposed how the former bank chief abused her office for personal gain.

  • Court Grants Nakura Bail After 23 Days In Prison For Allegedly Insulting NSA, Others.

A Yola High Court in Adamawa State has granted bail to the Chairman of Concerned Citizens, Gambo Nakura, after spending 23 days in prison for allegedly insulting the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and others

Equally, the court has quashed the proceedings of the Chief Magistrate Court II presided by M. A. Adamu, which remanded the applicant in prison custody since 10th September, 2025.

The High Court presided by Justice Christopher Dominic Mapeo, admitted Gambo Nakura to bail in his ruling delivered on Friday.

The court also directed the transfer of the case from the Chief Magistrate Court II to the Upper Area Court II sitting in Yola, Adamawa State for adjudication.

Justice Mapeo, admitted Nakura to bail in the sum of N5 million and a reliable surety who must be resident in Yola and must be a person of integrity.

Earlier, in its ruling, the court dismissed the preliminary objection filed by the Registrar, Chief Magistrate Court II as well as the Commissioner of Police, Adamawa State for lacking in merits.

Justice Mapeo stated that the offences for which the defendant was being held were bailable and that the prosecution had failed to tender evidence before the court to convince the court that the applicant will jump bail if granted.

Justice Mapeo held that the bail condition by the lower court, stipulating only one person as the defendant’s surety was unfair, and quashed the entire proceedings.

  • Obasanjo Recounts Emotional Moment He Learned of Abacha’s Death

Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has relived the dramatic moment he was informed of the death of General Sani Abacha, the late military ruler whose regime imprisoned him.

Speaking in a video shared by Symfoni TV, Obasanjo reflected on one of Nigeria’s most turbulent political eras, offering rare personal insight into how the end of Abacha’s rule became both a personal and national turning point.

Obasanjo was jailed in 1995 after being accused of plotting a coup against Abacha’s government—charges he consistently denied. Despite the uncertainty of his imprisonment, he said he held on to the hope of eventual freedom, though he never knew when it would come.

According to him, the shocking news of Abacha’s death on June 8, 1998, first came from a prison warder.

“The day Abacha died, a warder came to me and said, ‘Sir, congratulations.’
I asked him, ‘Warder, what is the problem?’
He replied, ‘Our enemy has died.’
I asked again, ‘Who is your enemy?’ And he said, ‘Abacha.’”

Initially, Obasanjo thought it might be a trap or misinformation. But as more warders repeated the same news, he realized something significant had happened.

Within a week, Obasanjo was released from Yola Prison, marking the start of his remarkable political comeback.

Abacha’s sudden death ended a regime often associated with human rights abuses, political repression, and corruption. His successor, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, quickly initiated a transition program that restored democracy in 1999.

For Obasanjo, the moment was more than personal liberation—it was a national rebirth. Less than a year later, he won the presidential election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and became Nigeria’s first civilian president of the Fourth Republic.

Reflecting on his imprisonment, Obasanjo has often said the experience deepened his commitment to democracy and shaped many of his decisions while in office.

Since leaving office in 2007, he has remained an influential voice in Nigerian politics, frequently speaking on governance, security, and development. His recollections of the Abacha years, analysts say, highlight how moments of personal suffering can intersect with broader national transformation.

Obasanjo’s story remains a testament to resilience, timing, and the unpredictable turns of history that have defined Nigeria’s journey from military rule to democracy.

‎An officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Daniel Daniran David, was arraigned before Upper Area Court II in Yola, Adamawa State, on Monday, facing charges of assault, public nuisance, and related offenses after allegedly attacking his neighbour’s family with tear gas.

‎The case, presided over by Hon. Japhet Ibrahim Basani, stems from a direct criminal complaint filed by Yusuf Adamu Ziradzo and his wife, Precious Ndogolare Yusuf, through their counsel, H.E. Turaso Esq. The complainants, who reside in the same compound as the defendant at Jifiya Suites in Jimeta, Yola North LGA, accused David of committing offenses under sections 153, 167, 217, 240, and 241 of the Adamawa State Penal Code.

‎According to the complainants, the incident occurred between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on September 6, 2025. Precious noticed their compound’s main gate was open and went to close it, citing a previous robbery attempt. Later, when David returned and found the gate locked, he allegedly demanded to know who closed it. Upon learning it was Precious, the defendant reportedly went to the complainants’ window and sprayed tear gas into their bedroom, where the couple and their four children were sleeping.

‎The tear gas caused immediate distress, with the children coughing, sneezing, and running in panic. Yusuf described the chaotic scene, stating that the family rushed to a hospital for treatment. The children, traumatized by the incident, pleaded not to return home, having suffered shock from the ordeal.

‎When the charges were read to David, he pleaded not guilty. His counsel, D.S. Adebole Esq., applied for bail, assuring the court of a reliable surety. Hon. Basani granted the bail application and adjourned the case to September 25, 2025, for a report of settlement or the commencement of a full hearing.

‎The incident has sparked concern in the local community, raising questions about the conduct of public officials and the safety of residents in shared compounds.
