The Senate session turned heated on Tuesday after Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) sharply criticized the withdrawal of police orderlies attached to lawmakers, accusing the executive of enforcing President Bola Tinubu’s directive selectively.

Raising a Point of Order, Ningi said he woke up to discover that his only police orderly had been withdrawn, insisting he was not opposed to the President’s November 23, 2025 directive—which ordered police escorts attached to VIPs to return to regular security duty—but furious that lawmakers appeared to be the first targets. “I woke up today and was told my police orderly had been withdrawn. I have no problem with that, but I want the same action applied across the board—they should also withdraw the president’s, vice president’s, ministers’, and others’ police escorts,” he said, lamenting what he described as a double standard.

Ningi further fumed that while senators were stripped of protection, “businessmen, foreign nationals, and celebrity entertainers” were still moving around with full police escorts, openly flouting the presidential directive. His outburst prompted the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, to reveal that the Senate leadership had already held an emergency meeting to seek an exemption for lawmakers, warning that the sudden withdrawal exposed members to unnecessary d+nger. In the meantime, the Senate directed its Committee on Police Affairs to investigate the alleged selective enforcement. The committee has four weeks to report back to plenary.

2027 Election: Ex-Senate President Lawan Says North Will Give Tinubu 75% of Votes

NEW: Enugu Govt to Restrict Tricycles, Yellow Buses From Major Highways as BRT Rollout Begins Soon

The Enugu State Government has announced plans to restrict the operation of tricycles (Keke), yellow buses, and minibuses from five major highways across Enugu city, paving the way for the smooth implementation of the state’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

This was made known by the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Obi Ozor, during a consultative meeting with transport unions and stakeholders at the ministry’s headquarters in Enugu on Monday.

Dr. Ozor listed the affected traffic corridors as Okpara Avenue–Abakaliki Road–New Haven Junction–Naira Triangle–Emene Airport; Ogui Road–Chime Avenue–Naira Triangle; and New Haven Junction–Bisala Road–Rangers Avenue–WAEC–Nkpokiti–Zik’s Avenue.

Others are Ogui Road–Presidential Road–WAEC–Nkpokiti and the entire Agbani Road stretch.

According to the commissioner, these will become dedicated BRT routes in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision to reposition Enugu as a modern, multimodal and globally competitive city. He however stresed that taxis will be also allowed to ply the BRT routes.

He noted that tricycles were never designed for high-speed highways, stressing that their presence on such routes disrupts traffic flow and puts lives at risk.

“We must be open to change. This reform is not about taking anyone’s job. It is about reorganizing the system so that BRT buses operate on the primary roads, yellow buses serve the secondary routes, and tricycles provide last-mile connectivity. Everyone has a place in the value chain,” he stated.

Dr. Ozor observed that the government has procured 200 CNG-powered BRT buses, alongside 4,000 electric taxis to be assembled locally at ANAMMCO in Enugu, with the first 1,000 taxis ready within three months.

He said the Mbah administration has also built 84 new bus shelters across the city, forming the backbone of a modern transit network designed around safety, comfort, and affordability.

He stated that Enugu, with an estimated two million daily commuters, requires at least 8,000 buses to meet mobility demands. The new BRT buses, he added, are equipped with padded seats, functional air-conditioning, WiFi, and strict safety features.

“Passengers do not stand in these buses, and every vehicle is tracked and monitored from our central command and control centre. The BRT fare now comes with a 47 percent discount to cushion transportation costs for citizens,” he said.

Dr. Ozor also announced some key resolutions reached at the meeting. He said that transport unions interested in participating in BRT bus or terminal operations are to submit proposals, including financial models, for government evaluation.

He further explained that the Ije Card, the state’s electronic fare payment system designed to make commuting faster, cashless, and more convenient, will be decentralized so that sales points reach five million residents within 90 days.

He added that the government regrets delays in allocating loading bays at the new transport terminals, noting that proposals are under review and would be finalized soon.

He encouraged the transport unions to access financial facilities to procure their own buses or to participate in the BRT operations space.

“There are enormous investment opportunities as Enugu expands its connectivity to other cities,” he said.

Stakeholders across the transport unions expressed their support for the state’s transport transformation agenda, saying they recognized the long-term benefits for commuters, operators, and the economy of the state.

The Enugu State Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Comrade Chidiebere Aniagu, stated that the union was not opposed to the reforms and shares the government’s vision for a safer and more efficient transportation ecosystem. He appealed to the government to address the concerns of their members.

Nigeria Recalls Fighter Jet as Benin Regains Stability After Failed Coup Attempt

Nigeria has withdrawn the fighter jet it deployed to the Benin Republic after authorities confirmed that the attempted coup against President Patrice Talon had been foiled and stability restored. The aircraft, initially sent from Lagos for surveillance and regional security monitoring, was ordered back following intelligence updates that loyalist forces had regained full control of Cotonou.

The coup attempt began early Sunday when mutineers attacked the presidential residence before seizing the national TV station, ORTB, in an effort to broadcast their takeover. Benin’s National Guard swiftly surrounded the rebels, securing key installations and confirming President Talon’s safety. Although some mutineers reportedly barricaded themselves inside the ORTB compound, negotiations were ongoing as order gradually returned. Authorities identified Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri as the leader of the failed putsch.

Benin Republic Confirms Failed Coup as Army Restores Order, President Talon Safe

Benin’s Interior Minister, Alassane Seidou, has announced that an attempted coup has been foiled after a small group of soldiers briefly seized the national television station and declared President Patrice Talon removed from office. The coup plotters, led by Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri under the name “Military Committee for Refoundation,” also attacked the president’s residence in Le Guézo before loyalist forces regained control.
The presidency confirmed that President Talon is unharmed and that the military has secured the capital. The incident adds to West Africa's growing wave of coups, coming less than a year after two of Talon’s close associates were jailed for a separate coup plot involving bribery of the presidential guard commander.

PRESIDENTIAL DIRECTIVE ON WITHDRAWAL OF POLICE PERSONNEL FROM VIP ESCORT DUTIES: NIGERIA POLICE FORCE RECORDS HIGH LEVEL OF COMPLIANCE

The Nigeria Police Force wishes to inform the general public that, in strict compliance with the directive of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, prohibiting the deployment of police personnel for VIP escort and guard duties, the Force Headquarters constituted a special enforcement team to monitor and ensure total adherence to the presidential order.

On 6th December 2025, commencing at about 1000 hours, the enforcement team carried out an extensive monitoring exercise across key locations in Lagos State, including the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, the Domestic Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, and several other strategic points.

The exercise revealed a satisfactory and commendable level of compliance by officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force. No case of unauthorised deployment of police personnel for VIP escort duties was recorded during the monitoring, and consequently, no arrest was made.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, reiterates the Force’s commitment to the full implementation of the presidential directive. The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in redeploying its personnel to core policing duties aimed at enhancing general security, crime prevention, and protection of lives and property across the country.

Members of the public are assured that the Nigeria Police Force will continue to enforce this policy nationwide without fear or favour and urges continued support as the Force works towards a more professional, efficient, and citizen-centered policing system.
