  • NIGERIA POLICE FORCE CONDUCTS PRE-DEPLOYMENT TRAINING ON PREVENTING THE RECRUITMENT AND USE OF CHILDREN IN ARMED CONFLICT

The Nigeria Police Force has conducted a week-long Pre-Deployment Training on Preventing the Recruitment and Use of Children in Armed Conflict held at the Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja. The programme was declared open by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, represented by AIG Aminu Baba Raji, AIG Training and Development and fully equipped officers with child-sensitive policing during internal security operations.

The programme was delivered in partnership with the Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace and Security, featuring international facilitators and certified Nigeria Police Trainers-of-Trainers. Officers were trained to detect and prevent child recruitment and to recognize that children associated with armed groups are primarily victims deserving confidentiality, empathy, and protection.

In his remarks, the IGP stressed that children remain among the most vulnerable in situations of violence and that their recruitment by armed actors whether as fighters, spies, or in other roles, is a grave violation of their rights and a threat to national security. He emphasized the need for officers deployed to conflict-affected areas to identify these risks and respond with professionalism, sensitivity, and gender-responsive approaches.

The training further strengthened existing Nigeria Police child-protection initiatives such as the Safer Schools Programme and POCACOV. A total of 25 officers were certified as ready for deployment to conflict-affected areas.

IGP Egbetokun expressed appreciation to the organizers for their support and assured that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to upholding human rights and enhancing child-protection capacity through continuous training and strong partnerships.

  • Police Accused of Cover-Up as Probe Into Anambra Organ-Harvesting Officers Remains Hidden for Two Years

Two years after the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced an investigation into shocking allegations of torture, extrajudicial killings, extortion, and organ harvesting by officers in the Anambra Police Command, the Nigeria Police Force has yet to release the probe report. Despite promises of transparency, the accused officers reportedly returned to duty immediately after being questioned, while whistleblower Nnamdi Emeh—who exposed the crimes—remains detained even after meeting his bail conditions. Rights group RULAAC warns that the continued silence, delayed report, and Emeh’s prolonged incarceration suggest a deliberate cover-up, reinforcing longstanding fears about abuses linked to the Awkuzu unit. Activists are demanding the report’s immediate release, Emeh’s freedom, accountability for implicated officers, and structural reforms to protect whistleblowers and uphold the rule of law.

An investigation has uncovered how armed bandits migrated from Niger Republic into forest corridors in Kwara and Niger states, establishing fortified bases used for kidnapping, robbery, cattle rustling, and cross-border operations. The criminals, pressured by intensified military and police raids, attempted a coordinated escape from Gbubu Forest but were intercepted by the Nigeria Police IRT, leading to the arrest of seven suspects from Nigeria and Niger Republic. The suspects confessed to belonging to multiple syndicates and described how porous borders, forest networks, and local collaborators aided their activities. Authorities say more arrests are expected as operations continue.

  • Court Declares Police Wanted Notice on Lagos Lawyer Illegal, Orders Retraction and Apology

A Federal High Court in Lagos has ruled that the Nigeria Police Force acted unlawfully by declaring Lagos-based lawyer Emmanuel Chinyere Orji wanted without a court order. Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa held that the Police exceeded their constitutional powers and violated Orji’s fundamental rights by publishing his name and photograph in national media and on its website.
The court nullified the publication, directed the Inspector General of Police to retract the notice and issue a formal apology, but dismissed Orji’s N1 billion damages claim. The judgment reinforces that law enforcement agencies cannot declare a citizen wanted without judicial authorization.

  • Rights Group Condemns Armed Police Raid, ‘Unlawful’ Arrest of Kano Prosecutor Muhuyi Magaji

A human rights organisation, Advocacy for Human Right and Cultural Values for Development Initiative (AHRCV), has criticised the arrest of Barrister Muhuyi Magaji, lead prosecutor in the Dala Inland Dry Port corruption case. Magaji was reportedly taken by a heavily armed team allegedly sent from Abuja without a warrant, despite court orders protecting him from intimidation. Although he was released on bail the following day, AHRCV described the operation as unlawful, politically motivated, and a threat to judicial independence.

The group said the arrest appeared aimed at obstructing an ongoing corruption case involving powerful individuals. It called on the Nigeria Police Force to justify the raid, urged judicial bodies to protect legal practitioners, and demanded an impartial investigation. AHRCV warned that using security agencies for intimidation undermines the fight against corruption and violates citizens’ fundamental rights.

  • Tinubu’s ‘Security Emergency’ Is Not a Constitutional State of Emergency — Odinkalu Warns Against State Police

In a detailed opinion piece, Chidi Anselm Odinkalu critiques President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a “nationwide security emergency,” arguing that it does not meet the constitutional requirements for a state of emergency and bypasses necessary oversight by the National Assembly. Odinkalu warns that the move appears politically calculated and masks the administration’s reluctance to acknowledge Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
He further cautions against the push for state police, citing historical abuses—from Native Authority Police to Bakassi Boys—and the failure of state-led security initiatives in Zamfara, Benue, and Anambra. Odinkalu warns that creating 37 separate police forces could decentralize despotism, enabling governors to weaponize security agencies against opponents. He argues instead for decentralizing the Nigeria Police Force with stronger oversight, autonomy, and professionalism.

  • The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved N100 billion for the comprehensive rehabilitation and upgrading of training institutions for the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, pending final approval by President Tinubu

During its 154th virtual meeting on Wednesday, NEC also approved N2.6 billion for consultancy services related to the project.

The initiative originated from President Tinubu’s directive at the 152nd NEC meeting in October, where he called for a complete overhaul of security agencies’ training institutions nationwide.

Presenting the committee’s findings, the Chairman and Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, highlighted the deplorable condition of most of these facilities and stressed the urgent need for intervention to enhance the quality of training for Nigeria’s security personnel.

  • "They were hunters with dane gun"- Police denies abduction of students in Nasarawa.

The Nasarawa State Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has denied reports of fresh abduction of school children in the North-Central state.

Reports had emerged on Friday claiming bandits had abducted and unspecified number of pupils from St. Peter’s Academy.

But in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state, SP Ramhan Nansel, said the students only saw hunters with dane guns and mistook them for kidnappers.

According to the Police, the school area was thoroughly combed, and normalcy was immediately restored.

“On 21/11/2025 at about 1000hrs, an unverified report filtered in alleging that two pupils of St. Peter’s Academy were abducted while engaging in sporting activities on the school field. In response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, promptly deployed a combined team of Police operatives and military personnel stationed within the general area to the scene.

“Upon arrival, it was discovered that the pupils had sighted some hunters carrying Dane guns and, out of fear, fled, mistaking them for kidnappers. The area was thoroughly combed, and normalcy was immediately restored. The proprietor of the school was also interviewed and confirmed to the operatives that the alarm raised was a false one. The general area continues to be closely monitored to forestall any breach of security.

“The Command therefore urges members of the public to disregard the circulating report as mere rumour unworthy of publication as factual news. Journalists and media outlets are further advised to always verify information before publication in order to avoid misleading the public.”

The statement read: “The Nasarawa State Police Command’s attention has been drawn to a report circulating across social media platforms and some news outlets alleging that kidnappers invaded St. Peter’s Academy, Rukubi, in Doma Local Government Area, and abducted two pupils. The Command wishes to state unequivocally that the report is false and does not reflect the true state of affairs.

  • Retired Police Officer Collapses as Aggrieved Ex-Police Personnel Protest Unpaid Pensions at National Assembly.

A retired police officer collapsed on Thursday at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, as hundreds of former Nigeria Police Force personnel staged a mass protest over the non-payment of their pensions and entitlements.

The retirees many frail and elderly gathered at the main gate with placards reading “We Are Dying in Silence,” “Pay Us Our Pensions,” and “35 Years of Service, Nothing to Show.” Their demonstration briefly disrupted movement around the complex as they chanted solidarity songs and accused the Federal Government of abandoning them.

Eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters that a retiree in his late 70s suddenly slumped while chanting. He was revived after first aid was administered by security personnel.

Operating under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) Police Retirees Association, the protesters said they had been reduced to hardship despite serving the country for over three decades. They demanded to be removed from the CPS which they described as exploitative and reinstated into the old Defined Benefits Scheme that guaranteed stable post-service welfare.

Their action follows a similar protest in October, which saw human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore join them in solidarity. Sowore had called the CPS a “fraudulent arrangement” and criticised the government for subjecting retirees to poverty.

“I’m not just fighting for the police; I’m fighting with retired police officers,” Sowore told the crowd. “Those holding your destinies must know Nigerians will not continue to suffer in silence.”

He also urged retirees across all security agencies and the civil service to unite, saying the struggle affects everyone.

Mbah explained that the move would establish an intervention fund for rebuilding and digital transformation, adding that tinubu’s approval of 30,000 new police recruits required proper training infrastructure. “we cannot train a 21st-century force using 20th-century systems,” he said, emphasizing the need for digital skills in ai, robotics, and mechatronics.

He stressed that the initiative was proactive and not in reaction to any external comment. “this directive was issued before recent foreign remarks. the president is simply addressing decades of neglect,” he clarified.

Governor dapo abiodun, former igp alkali usman baba, and aig olatunji disu, who oversees the spu, affirmed that the committee’s findings will guide the next phase of comprehensive reforms across nigeria’s security training institutions.

  • Nigerian Police Officers Ordered to Pay N2,000 Each for “Attitudinal Change” Book Dedicated to IGP Egbetokun

Nigerian police authorities have reportedly ordered all officers to pay N2,000 each to purchase a new book titled “Attitudinal Change Handbook for Nigeria Police Force,” which is dedicated to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. The payment is said to be mandatory with a deadline set for Thursday.

This comes after another directive earlier in August, where officers from the rank of ASP and above were required to pay N6,000 for the 2025 Annual POWA dues — an association led by the IGP’s wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Egbetokun.

These compulsory deductions have sparked concerns about transparency, welfare, and accountability within the Nigerian Police Force, especially as officers continue to complain of poor working conditions.
