  • Reactions Trail Peter Obi's Comments As FIFA Says Funds Given To Build Stadium Was Mismanaged.

Former governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has drawn significant public attention following his reaction to reports alleging the mismanagement of funds provided by the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).

The controversy erupted after footage of a sports facility, reportedly built with FIFA’s $1.2 million grant, surfaced on social media. The video quickly went viral, prompting outrage from Nigerians who questioned how such a large sum could result in a project that appeared substandard.

Many commentators described the development as another example of impunity and lack of accountability within the nation’s sporting institutions.

Reacting through a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Peter Obi expressed deep disappointment over the situation. He described the NFF’s actions as heartbreaking, saying they mirrored the entrenched corruption that has hindered national progress.

Obi emphasized that sports, a sector capable of inspiring young people and uniting the country, had once again fallen victim to mismanagement and neglect.

According to the former governor, the alleged misuse of funds meant to promote football development reflects a broader disregard for the aspirations of Nigerian youths. He noted that such actions discourage hope and undermine the potential of sports as a tool for national development and unity.

Obi, who is widely known for his advocacy for prudent financial management and transparency in governance, urged authorities to hold those responsible accountable. His comments have since generated widespread discussion across various social media platforms, with many Nigerians calling for a full investigation into how the FIFA funds were utilized.

As of the time of this report, the Nigerian Football Federation has not issued an official response to the allegations.

  • Our Moral Fabrics Is Gone,We Honor Thieves”Melaye Says,Shares Photo Of FIFA Stadium In Kebbi,Kenya.

Former lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye has criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) government over what he described as a glaring case of mismanagement involving FIFA’s $1.2 million grant meant for sports development in Nigeria.

In a post shared on his X handle (formerly Twitter), Melaye compared a stadium reportedly built in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, with another constructed in Kenya. Both facilities were said to have been funded by FIFA with identical grants of $1.2 million to support football infrastructure across African nations.

“FIFA gave Nigeria $1.2 million and they gave Kenya $1.2 million. The goal was for both of them to build stadiums for football development. Our moral fabrics is gone, we celebrate rogues, we honor thieves. Up APC,” Melaye wrote.

Images shared by the former senator showed the Kenyan project as a modern, well-equipped football stadium with standard seating and professional facilities. In stark contrast, the Nigerian version appeared as a small, underdeveloped mini-stadium with limited infrastructure, a situation that has stirred widespread outrage on social media.

Melaye’s post has triggered a flurry of reactions, with many Nigerians demanding answers from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Ministry of Sports on how the FIFA funds were expended. Critics argued that the difference between the two projects reflects deeper corruption and poor accountability in public spending.

  • “I Saw It Coming” — Sunday Oliseh Speaks on the Current Struggles of the Super Eagles; Why He Resigned As the Team’s Coach, Reveals NFF Still Owes Him over N30 million in salary.

Former Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, has revealed why he resigned from his position as Nigeria’s national team manager, stating that he foresaw the challenges that later unfolded within the team’s administration.

Speaking about his time in charge of the national team, Oliseh said he decided to step down after realizing that the system was not aligned with his vision and that efforts to bring about positive change were being resisted.

“I was coaching, and at one point, I saw what is happening now coming back then. I told my friends, including Rash, that it was coming. When I saw they didn’t want to follow the right path, I said, ‘Okay, I’m resigning,’” Oliseh said.

The former captain of the Super Eagles noted that he remains the only Nigerian coach to have voluntarily resigned from the position, adding that he is still being owed two months’ salary ,amounting to $26,000 by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Oliseh also disclosed that he has been urged by many to take legal action against the NFF, but he has refused out of patriotism, insisting that he would never take his country to an international court.

“People have invited me to take Nigeria to court, but I refused. I will not take my fatherland to a western court. Even if I win, the headlines will not say ‘Oliseh takes NFF to court,’ they will say ‘Oliseh takes Nigeria to court,’” he explained.

Oliseh served as the Super Eagles head coach between 2015 and 2016 before resigning, citing unpaid wages and poor working conditions.

  • Super Eagles’ Flight to Uyo Delayed After Aircraft’s Windscreen Cracked Mid-Air.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that the Super Eagles’ return to Uyo for Tuesday’s decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic was delayed after their aircraft developed a cr+cked windscreen mid-air.

The ValueJet Airline plane, which had earlier flown part of the team to Polokwane for the match against Lesotho, made an emergency return to Luanda, Angola, shortly after takeoff during a refuelling stop.

According to the NFF Communications Department, the pilot acted swiftly to ensure the safety of all passengers, and the aircraft landed safely back in Luanda without casualties.

The incident occurred as the team was heading home following a 2–1 away win over Lesotho, a result that boosted Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. The victory lifted the Eagles to third place in Group C with 14 points, behind Benin Republic (17) and South Africa (15).

The NFF stated that ValueJet, in coordination with the Federal Government, the Ministers of Aviation and Foreign Affairs, and the Chief of Staff to the President, is working urgently to secure permits for a replacement aircraft from Lagos to transport the delegation to Uyo.

Tuesday’s fixture is seen as a must-win for Nigeria. Only group winners qualify automatically for the World Cup, while the four best runners-up advance to the playoffs.

To keep their qualification hopes alive, the Super Eagles must defeat Benin Republic and hope South Africa drops points in their final game. Anything less would end Nigeria’s bid to return to the world stage after missing Qatar 2022.

The clash at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo is being viewed as a defining moment for the three-time African champions, who are determined to reclaim national pride and secure a place at FIFA 2026.

  • 2026 WCQ: NFF Blames Dessers, Troost-Ekong For Super Eagles’ Draw With South Africa

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has criticised Cyriel Dessers and captain William Troost-Ekong following the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw with South Africa in Tuesday’s 2026 World Cup qualifier.

Needing a win to boost their qualification chances, Nigeria fell behind in the 25th minute when Troost-Ekong turned the ball into his own net. Calvin Bassey restored parity before halftime with a powerful header.

In a post-match statement, NFF Director of Communications, Dr Ademola Olajire, faulted Dessers’ display, describing it as ineffective.

“Cyriel Dessers, who had an unimpressive game in Uyo where he was substituted after coming on, did not fare any better. He was too slow to latch onto passes, failed to win aerial duels and offered little to spark the Nigerian att+ck,” the statement read.

Troost-Ekong also came under f+re for his costly error.

“The Super Eagles’ fighting spirit was diminished after team captain William Ekong inadvertently swept the ball into his own net in the 25th minute, wrong-footing Stanley Nwabali and handing the Bafana Bafana the lead and momentum,” the NFF added.

  • Sunday Oliseh Blasts NFF Over Peter Rufai’s Burial

During an interview, Sunday Oliseh was asked whether the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had failed legendary goalkeeper Peter Rufai and other ex-players.

The interviewer said, let me put you on the spot here. Do you think the NFF failed Peter Rufai and other legends?” Without mincing words Oliseh said,
“The NFF has been failing us forever and it is no secret. In fact, if we had the better federation, Nigeria would have won the World Cup. The federation is extremely important and that’s why I’m highly more than disappointed the way the burial of Rufai went.

Experience has taught me this, the moment you hear somebody saying something and the second one is coming out to counter them, is not giving back arguments that are based on facts or sources and they’re attacking the person, the character of the other person, that already tells you the one attacking the character is wrong.

So, that is why I said earlier on, this issue is not about Taribo West, whatever he said. It’s not about Tarebo West as regards his political background, his beliefs; this issue is about the point Tarebo was highlighting and pinpointing on. That was the fact that the burial was not done in a way that it should have been done for a huge personality like Peter Rufai.”

Oliseh’s  remarks once again spotlight the long-standing grievances against the NFF, raising questions about how Nigeria treats its sporting icons both in life and in death. His call echoes a broader concern that the federation must take responsibility and ensure legends like Rufai are honored with the dignity they deserve.

  • I would never advise my son to play for this country— Ex-Super Eagles Defender, Taribo West says as he Laments Neglect of Late Peter Rufai, Blasts NFF and Lagos State at Funeral.

Former Super Eagles defender, Taribo West, could not hold back his emotions on Friday as he spoke to journalists at the funeral of ex-Nigeria goalkeeper, Peter Rufai. The ex-Inter Milan star, visibly shaken, expressed deep grief over the treatment meted out to Rufai after retirement, describing it as a shameful reflection of how Nigeria handles its football heroes.

“I share the pains and burdens with the Rufai family,” West said. “It is disheartening that Lagos State and the Nigerian Football Federation dropped the buck on them. This is not how a nation should treat those who gave everything on the field.”

Struggling to keep his emotions in check, West recounted how the news of Rufai’s death hit him harder than the loss of his own parents. “When my mother passed, I didn’t shed tears. When my father died in my hands, I didn’t cry.

But when Rufai died, I had goosebumps and tears rolled down my cheeks. What kind of nation treats its heroes like this?” The former defender accused football authorities of neglect, pointing to similar cases of late Nigerian stars Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini, and Thompson Oliha, all of whom, he said, were abandoned in their final years.

“Imagine a family crying and begging among themselves just to raise money to bury a national hero. That is madness,” West fumed. “With this kind of example, I would never advise my son to play for this country.

Do we even have a football federation in this Nigeria?” Taribo West ended his remarks by urging authorities to wake up to their responsibilities in honoring and supporting retired players who sacrificed for the country.

It’s a sort of a warning that we really need to have a long-term plan. It is not something that we just wish it away,” he said. Drawing comparisons with the fight against COVID-19, Buratai highlighted the massive investments that went into information campaigns, communication, palliatives, and preventive measures during the pandemic, which eventually saw the entire country shut down.

“The whole nation was locked down because of COVID-19. But we can do the same thing. We can lock down this country to make sure that everybody concentrates and deals with this crisis of so-called terrorists and bandits and kidnappers,” he noted.

He stressed that insecurity, like a pandemic or natural disaster, requires nationwide mobilization and shared responsibility, not just the efforts of security forces. Buratai also cited last year’s Maiduguri flood as an example of how the country rallied together to provide relief and rehabilitation, urging that the same level of urgency should be applied to the fight against insecurity.

  • It’s Disheartening,’ Taribo West Slams Neglect Of Ex-Internationals At Rufai’s Burial

Former Super Eagles defender Taribo West has decried the treatment of late goalkeeper Peter Rufai’s family, accusing football authorities of neglecting ex-internationals.

Speaking at Rufai’s service of songs in Lagos, West lamented that both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Lagos FA failed to support the family, forcing them to solicit funds.

The visibly emotional ex-AC Milan star said the pattern of abandonment seen with past legends like Rashidi Yekini, Stephen Keshi, and Thompson Oliha shows why he would not advise his son to play for Nigeria.

Rufai, Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 1994 World Cup and AFCON-winning squad, was buried Friday at Ikoyi Cemetery, Lagos.

  • Russia vs Nigeria: ‘Very bad’ – Naumov knocks NFF over absence of Osimhen, Lookman, others.
Nikolai Naumov, a former Lokomotiv Moscow president, has knocked the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, over the absence of some key players from the Super Eagles squad list to tackle Russia in an international friendly on Friday.

Naumov explained that it’s very bad from the part of the NFF not to ensured that the key Super Eagles players take part in the friendly against Russia.

Russia will welcome Nigeria at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on Friday evening.

But key Super Eagles players like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Wilfried Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Kelechi Iheanacho, Samuel Chukwueze, Ola Aina and among others will not partake in the encounter for various reasons.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Naumov expressed his displeasure with those managing Nigerian football as he described the Super Eagles players that will face Russia as “beach footballers.”

“The non-arrival of key [Super Eagles] players for the friendly match against Russia is very bad,” Naumov was quoted by Championat as saying.

“When we [Russia] agree [to play a friendly match] with any national team, we incur significant expenses for flights and accommodation.

“[As a result of ] such expenses, we [Russia] must clearly indicate what line-up the opponent should’ve.

“Only the strongest players [from the opponent] are needed, except for injuries or other emergencies.

“When the Nigerian national team agrees to such a match, the management [NFF] must discuss this issue with their players in advance and now they are bringing beach footballers.”

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Naumov expressed his displeasure with those managing Nigerian football as he described the Super Eagles players that will face Russia as “beach footballers.” “The non-arrival of key [Super Eagles] players for the friendly match against Russia is very bad,” Naumov was quoted by Championat as saying.
