• Obasanjo floats institute to address Africa’s leadership challenges.

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Tuesday, announced the establishment of Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute.

Speaking through a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former president described the institute as a movement aimed at addressing the yawning gaps in Africa’s leadership narrative.

Obasanjo said the institute, though not a military organisation would borrow what is good from the military as well as training offered by the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos.

He said this would help to build a new generation of conscientious, principled, prepared, and people-focused leaders in the African continent.

While inaugurating the governing board of the institute at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, the former President advised the members to be guided by the conviction that Africa’s greatest asset was its people.

Obasanjo, who served as the institute’s board chairman, recalled that the establishment was borne out of his over seven decades of understudying leadership development in Africa.

  • Exposed: Alleged Embezzlement of Police Funds Under IGP Egbetokun Sparks Outrage

Recent reports have surfaced alleging that the quarterly allocation of ₦4 million (approximately $2,500) designated for state police commands has been misappropriated by the Police Management Team under the leadership of Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun. This revelation has intensified concerns over financial mismanagement within the Nigeria Police Force.

Further compounding these concerns, an investigation highlighted that divisional police offices across the country operate on meager quarterly budgets ranging between ₦15,000 and ₦30,000. This inadequate funding reportedly hampers effective policing and may inadvertently foster environments where corruption can thrive.

Adding to the controversy, the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has been embroiled in a financial scandal. Members of the PCRC have called on IGP Egbetokun to investigate the National Chairman, Mogaji Olaniyan, over allegations of misappropriating funds totaling over ₦60 million. Despite petitions submitted, there has been little to no action taken on the matter.

These allegations have led to public outcry, with citizens and civil society organizations demanding transparency and accountability within the police force. The hashtag #EgbetokunMustGo has been trending on social media platforms, reflecting the growing demand for leadership change.

  • Education Rights Campaign Demands Reversal of UI's Drastic Fee Hike

The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) has condemned the University of Ibadan's (UI) recent decision to increase tuition fees for the 2023/2024 academic session. The new fees, ranging from ₦230,000 to ₦412,000, represent a staggering 453% to 750% increase from the previous session's fees of ₦64,600 to ₦69,600 .

ERC describes the hike as "callous, unjustifiable, and anti-poor," highlighting that previous fee increases have not led to improvements in students' learning and living conditions. The group also criticizes the Students' Union's approach to the issue, urging for a more democratic and inclusive response from student leadership .

In response to the administration's actions, ERC has called for mass mobilization and peaceful protests to pressure the university management to reverse the fee hike. The group emphasizes the importance of student unity and collective action in defending the right to affordable education.

This development has sparked widespread discussions about the accessibility of higher education in Nigeria and the need for policies that prioritize students' welfare.

  • ECOWAS Leaders Undermining Rule of Law, Falana Alleges
Senior Advocate Urges President Tinubu to Ensure Compliance with ECOWAS Court Rulings
Prominent human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has accused the leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) of failing to uphold the rule of law and democratic principles in the region.

In a statement titled “End Disobedience of ECOWAS Courts,” Falana said ECOWAS leaders have repeatedly shown disregard for the rulings of the Community Court of Justice, undermining its authority and the region’s legal framework.

Falana disclosed that as of December 2024, a total of 154 judgements from the ECOWAS Court remained unenforced by member states. He noted that Nigeria tops the list with 44 outstanding judgements, followed by Togo (27) and Guinea (15). Other non-compliant countries include Mali (10), Sierra Leone (9), Niger (8), Côte d’Ivoire (8), Senegal (8), Ghana (6), Benin (5), Liberia (4), Burkina Faso (5), The Gambia (3), Cabo Verde (1), and Guinea-Bissau (1).

“With respect, the ECOWAS leaders have failed to uphold democratic norms and the rule of law,” Falana said. “Without any legal or political justification, they have treated the decisions of the ECOWAS Court with disdain.”

He emphasized that some of the same leaders — or their family members — who once defied the court have later turned to it for protection after leaving office. Notable examples include Charles Taylor (Liberia), Laurent Gbagbo (Côte d’Ivoire), Boni Yayi (Benin), Mamadou Tandja (Niger), Blaise Compaoré (Burkina Faso), and Mrs. Doe, widow of former Liberian president Samuel Doe.

    Nigeria’s Responsibility
Falana, who previously served as President of the West African Bar Association, said Article 24 of the ECOWAS Court mandates each member state to designate a national authority responsible for enforcing court decisions. In 2014, Nigeria appointed its Attorney-General for this role.

He called on President Bola Tinubu to instruct Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) to immediately begin implementing the court’s decisions.

“It is the height of embarrassment that Nigeria, under the current ECOWAS Chairmanship of President Tinubu, leads in the number of unenforced judgements,” Falana said. “To restore credibility and regional leadership, Nigeria must comply without further delay.”

    Tinubu’s ECOWAS Legacy
President Tinubu, who currently serves as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, recently praised the bloc’s achievements during its 50th anniversary celebrations, citing progress in election monitoring, mediation, and institution-building, including the ECOWAS Court of Justice.

“ECOWAS has upheld democratic norms through election observation, mediation, and institutions such as the ECOWAS Parliament and Court of Justice — cementing accountability, rule of law, and people-centred governance,” Tinubu said.

Falana’s remarks, however, suggest a stark contrast between rhetoric and reality, as he urged West African leaders to stop undermining the very institutions they claim to support.

How Evan Enwerem Was Removed as Senate President

Evans Enwerem began his rise in public service as chairman of the Nigerian Airports Authority (NAA) from 1980 to 1983. He later emerged on the political scene in the 1990s when General Ibrahim Babangida lifted the ban on political activity, allowing Enwerem to become governor of Imo State.

With the return to democratic rule in 1999 under President Olusegun Obasanjo, Enwerem was elected senator representing Imo East. However, he had ambitions beyond the Senate floor—he set his sights on becoming Senate President.

His main rival for the position was Chuba Okadigbo, a well-respected politician from Anambra State and former political adviser to President Shehu Shagari during the Second Republic. Okadigbo was the popular favorite among senators, especially within the dominant People's Democratic Party (PDP), and had quietly campaigned by meeting with many of them before the Senate’s inauguration.

Despite Okadigbo's popularity and strong backing, President Obasanjo reportedly opposed his candidacy. In the days leading up to the Senate leadership election, Obasanjo allegedly coordinated with opposition parties and some PDP senators to thwart Okadigbo’s bid.

On election day in June 1999, Enwerem pulled off an upset, defeating Okadigbo by 66 votes to 43. He assumed the Senate presidency, but his victory—backed by presidential influence—caused friction within the PDP and foreshadowed the turbulence ahead for the Nigerian Senate.

Enwerem’s tenure was marked by unwavering loyalty to Obasanjo, which only fueled skepticism about his leadership. In August 1999, TELL magazine published an exposé questioning his credentials and legitimacy. The controversy spiraled when questions arose over whether his actual name was “Evan” or “Evans,” with some of Okadigbo’s allies accusing him of falsifying personal information for political gain.

Although Enwerem claimed the discrepancies were merely typographical errors, the scandal intensified. On November 18, 1999, while accompanying President Obasanjo to the airport for a foreign trip, the Senate moved against him. In his absence, a vote was taken, and Enwerem was removed from office.

Chuba Okadigbo was subsequently elected as his replacement. Although initially celebrated, Okadigbo too fell from grace—impeached in 2000 over allegations of corruption, though he continued to serve as the senator representing Anambra North.

In a powerful show of force and precision, the 115 Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), under the Air Component of Operation Delta Safe (OPDS), has taken down 49 illegal refineries, cooking tanks, and over 20 massive crude oil reservoirs used by oil thieves across the Niger Delta in the past five months.

Speaking during a press briefing in Port Harcourt, Group Captain Abdulafeez Opaleye stated that the air strikes are strictly targeted at criminal operations, not civilians. “Our strikes are designed to be as accurate as possible. So far, there have been no civilian casualties, and we remain extremely cautious in that regard,” he emphasized.

According to The Sun, the Air Force’s precision strikes, carried out using attack helicopters, also destroyed 16 large boats used for crude oil theft and smuggling. The operations involved 172 sorties and logged over 268 hours of flight time, consuming 87,938 liters of Jet A1 fuel.

A major highlight was the March 27 air raid on Egbema Ohaji, which dismantled a critical illegal refining hub. Opaleye credited the success to coordinated Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), including UAVs and aircraft from the NAF Headquarters.

The Commander further detailed how oil thieves have adapted by relocating operations up to 15 kilometers into forested mangroves—yet the Air Force has remained one step ahead, detecting and striking these remote sites with surgical precision.

Beyond air missions, the 115 SOG has deployed ground troops for joint internal security operations, strengthening law enforcement in volatile regions.

Acknowledging the strategic impact, Opaleye linked the rise in Nigeria’s oil production—from 1.2 million to 1.85 million barrels per day—to these air operations, especially in areas inaccessible to ground forces.

Backed by top-tier air assets like EC-135, T-129 ATAK, and Mi-35 gunships, the unit remains a formidable aerial force known as the “home of combat helicopters.” Commendations also poured in from Navy Commander Goddy Egbunu and Defence Media Operations, praising the team’s leadership and impact on national security.

  • Celebrating VMD – A True Patriot and Voice for the People

In a time when silence is easy and compromise is common, VMD chose a different path—the path of courage, truth, and justice.

This is a man who has stood fearlessly for the rights of ordinary Nigerians, speaking out boldly against corruption, injustice, and oppression. Through his actions, voice, and leadership, VMD has touched countless lives, bringing hope to the hopeless and standing as a symbol of resistance in a system that often punishes the brave.

But let’s remember something important: No one is perfect. Every great man in history had flaws, made mistakes, or took missteps. Mistakes do not define character—consistency, conviction, and compassion do.

So while some may choose to sit on his shortcomings, we choose to stand with the truth of his impact. We choose to remember the battles he’s fought, the voices he’s amplified, and the sacrifices he’s made.

Nigeria needs more people like VMD—unafraid, unbought, and unbroken.

Let’s continue to support and uplift those who are brave enough to speak when others stay silent.

  • NIGERIA BANS BURKINA RALLY

It appears that the 2 years Burkina Faso has spent under revolutionary leadership has sent jitters down the spines of Nigeria's leadership. Pan-Africanism is apparently now banned in Nigeria.

Or at least that's what Nigerian activist Kola Edokpayi discovered when he organised a Pan-African solidarity rally in support of Burkina Faso. The rally was to be held in the spirit of countless other rallies around the world that took place on the same day in defence of Burkina Faso and its leader Ibrahim Traore against attacks from the US. He immediately received a cease-and-desist order from the Edo State Commissioner of Police.

And cease he did, but that was just the start. The Department of State Services and the police stormed his office, detained about six individuals, and later released four, keeping Edokpayi and another associate in custody. The act has been condemned by the Edo State chapter of the Take It Back Movement, calling it a violation of constitutional rights.

President Bola Tinubu's government has maintained a position of hostility against the Alliance of Sahel States, which Burkina Faso is a member of. Following the popular revolutionary coup against Western favourite Mohamed Bazoum in Niger, Tinubu, who then chaired ECOWAS, pushed firmly for an ECOWAS invasion to reinstate Bazoum. Solidarity from Mali and Burkina Faso with Niger is credited with eventually giving ECOWAS cold feet. Since then, there have been no conciliatory moves from Abuja.

Let us know what you think. Why did Nigeria ban rallies in support of Burkina Faso?

  • Wike Reportedly Refuses to Unseal PDP Headquarters Despite President Tinubu’s Directive

Despite President Bola Tinubu’s directive to unseal the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the building remains sealed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) under the leadership of Minister Nyesom Wike.

On Monday, May 26, 2025, the FCTA sealed several properties in Abuja, including the PDP’s Wadata Plaza in Wuse Zone 5, over unpaid ground rents. In response to public outcry, President Tinubu intervened, ordering the unsealing of the affected properties and granting a 14-day grace period for defaulters to settle their dues.

However, as of Wednesday morning, May 28, 2025, the PDP headquarters remained padlocked, with FCTA seals still in place. Staff members were seen outside the premises, expressing frustration over the continued closure.

Minister Wike has defended the FCTA’s actions, emphasizing the importance of ground rent payments for the administration’s revenue. He stated that the enforcement would continue, regardless of political pressure or blackmail.

The PDP has condemned the sealing of its headquarters, describing it as an attempt to undermine democracy. Party leaders have called for immediate compliance with the President’s directive to unseal the premises.

The situation has sparked debates about the autonomy of the FCTA and the implications of defying presidential orders. Observers are closely monitoring developments as tensions between the FCTA and the PDP escalate.

  • Tackle Internet Fraud Like you Tackled Cultism-Olukoyede Charges Students

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede has called on students of tertiary institutions in the country to maximize the internal control mechanisms of their schools in tackling cybercrime in their campuses, just as they did against campus cultism.

“I recall that many years ago in this country, tertiary students through the leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS initiated a nationwide denouncement of cultism, having taken advantage of the internal control mechanisms of tertiary institutions and that brought about drastic reduction in cultism and till date, we hear less cases of cultism in the campuses. Today, the leadership of NANS must adopt the same measures in tackling the menace of cybercrime among Nigerian students rather than make themselves available as political thugs due to personal gains. NANS used to be a watchdog against politicians many years ago but it seems the body has lost focus,” he said.

Olukoyede made the call through the Acting Director, Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the EFCC, ACE I Hauwa Garba Ringim when she received the delegation of Southwest Executive members of NANS, led by its newly elected coordinator, Comrade Taiwo Owolewa.

Olukoyede, while congratulating the Owolewa on his emergence, urged him to make his tenure standout by fully supporting the EFCC against cybercrime through initiating programmes across tertiary institutions in the Southwest that would sensitize and re-orientate students to shun corruption and more importantly cybercrime and focus on their studies and explore legitimate ways of making money. As a major stakeholder in the fight against corruption and financial crimes, he charged NANS not to provide cover for any student cybercriminal on campus.

“It is worrisome that 90 percent of the youths arrested for internet fraud these days are students, even secondary school students are now fully involved,” he said.

In his remarks, Owolewa thanked Ringim for her interest in the moral development of students in the Southwest, especially in guiding them away from cybercrimes.

“The Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the EFCC, under the leadership of Hajiya Hauwa Garba Ringim has truly shown courage in the fight against cybercrime and her collaborative efforts cannot be jettisoned among Southwest tertiary students on our campuses. NANS as a major stakeholder in the fight against internet fraud will lend its voice and take actions to combat the menace on our campuses. Programmes are ongoing on campuses to sensitize students on legitimate self-reliance and adopting the willingness to blow the whistle on any perpetrator of internet fraud among students,” he said.
