Uganda Electoral Commission Condemns Police Attack on Bobi Wine’s Campaign Rally in Gulu

The Uganda Electoral Commission has criticized the violent police and military crackdown on presidential candidate Bobi Wine’s campaign rally in Gulu, describing the clashes as a threat to free and fair elections. Tear gas, beatings, and force were reportedly used to disperse supporters, with Bobi Wine alleging he was personally assaulted. EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama urged all stakeholders to obey electoral laws, resolve disagreements peacefully, and allow candidates to campaign freely. The Commission called for a full police investigation and warned law enforcement to exercise restraint and use only lawful, proportionate measures during the election period.

NIGERIA CONDEMNS ATTEMPTED UNCONSTITUTIONAL CHANGE OF GOVERNMENT IN THE REPUBLIC OF BENIN

The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has received with grave concern and unequivocally condemns in the strongest possible terms the attempted forcible seizure of power in our friendly neighbour and brotherly nation, the Republic of Benin in the early hours of Sunday 7th December, 2025.

This act of destabilization represents a direct assault on democracy, constitutional order, and the collective will of the Beninese people, who have consistently demonstrated their commitment to peaceful political transitions. Nigeria stands in firm solidarity with the Government and people of the Republic of Benin, and applauds the swift action taken by Beninese authorities to protect its legitimate institutions and preserve the peace.

We commend the courage and professionalism of the Beninese security forces in defending the constitutional order and guaranteeing the safety of the President. Their dedication ensured that the unfortunate attempt to subvert democracy was decisively repelled.

Nigeria reiterates its strong commitment to the principles of democracy, good governance, and the rule of law as fundamental pillars for peace, development and regional stability. Unconstitutional changes of government are an unacceptable and retrogressive step that threatens the hard-earned democratic gains and socio-economic progress of our sub-region.

As a steadfast partner within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union, Nigeria calls on all member states and the international community to unite in condemning this act and in reaffirming our shared commitment to the African Union’s Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, and the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

We urge all parties in the Republic of Benin to remain calm, uphold the rule of law, and continue to channel any political discourse through peaceful, constitutional, and democratic means.

FG Projects N34.33trn Revenue for 2026, Sets Exchange Rate at N1,512/$1 in New MTEF

The Federal Executive Council has approved the 2026–2028 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper, setting Nigeria’s projected revenue for 2026 at N34.33 trillion. According to Budget and Economic Planning Minister Atiku Bagudu, the framework adopts a benchmark oil production target of 2.06 million barrels per day, with a conservative 1.8 million barrels per day used for budgeting. The government also approved an oil price benchmark of $64.85 per barrel and an exchange rate of N1,512/$1, influenced partly by the upcoming 2027 general elections.
The MTEF outlines key expenditure figures, including N15.91 trillion for debt servicing, N15.27 trillion for non-recurrent spending, and a fiscal deficit of N20.1 trillion. Bagudu emphasised ongoing reforms to expand non-oil revenue, strengthen tax administration, and curb leakages in the oil and minerals sectors. The government is also working with the National Assembly to restore a January–December budget cycle, with parts of the 2025 capital expenditure expected to roll over into 2026.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), confirming his move in a post on X with photos of his membership card. Atiku resigned from the PDP in July, citing irreconcilable differences and saying the party had deviated from its core principles. Although he helped adopt the ADC as the opposition coalition platform for the 2027 elections, he and other key figures delayed their formal registration. The coalition says its goal is to “rescue and rebuild Nigeria,” accusing the APC-led government of undermining democratic institutions.

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after collecting his membership card in Kaduna. He said the ADC offers Nigerians a credible alternative to the ruling APC, which he criticised for incompetence. El-Rufai urged youths to register with the party ahead of the 2027 elections. His move comes just three days after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also joined the ADC. Former President Goodluck Jonathan has safely left Guinea-Bissau after the military staged a coup and seized power. Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed he departed on a special flight with his delegation, following calls from the House of Representatives to ensure his safety.

Jonathan had been in the country leading the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission during last Sunday’s elections before the military suspended the electoral process, closed borders, and took control. President Umaro Embalo was arrested, and the army later appointed General Horta N’Tam as interim leader for one year.

The Nigerian government strongly condemned the coup, describing it as a violation of ECOWAS democratic principles, and demanded the immediate restoration of constitutional order.

Election observers from ECOWAS, the AU, and the West African Elders Forum also denounced the military takeover, calling for the release of detained officials and warning that the coup undermines the region’s democratic progress.
