The Federal High Court has firmly denied a viral report alleging that Justice James Omotosho survived an assassination attempt days after sentencing IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment.

The rumour, circulated by a Facebook blogger, claimed the judge was attacked and rushed to the hospital. However, in an official statement on Sunday, Chief Registrar Sulaiman Hassan described the story as completely false, unfounded, and designed to mislead Nigerians.

The statement, titled “Rebuttal to False Publication by ‘Celebrity Blogger’ on the Alleged Assassination Attempt on Justice James Omotosho”, urged the public to disregard the report and refrain from spreading misinformation.

“We firmly and unequivocally declare that the said report is completely false,” the court stated.
“The public is advised to treat this publication as fake news.”

Hassan expressed concern over the motive behind the fabrication, noting that such claims could spark panic and undermine confidence in the judiciary. He called on security agencies to investigate and prosecute those behind the malicious publication under cybercrime and defamation laws.

BACKGROUND ON THE CASE
Justice Omotosho had on Thursday sentenced Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment on terrorism charges. While several counts carried the death penalty, the judge opted for leniency, saying:

“As a Christian, I chose to be merciful.”

Kanu received life sentences on multiple counts, with additional terms running concurrently. The court also ordered his transfer to protective custody outside Kuje Prison and restricted his access to digital devices.

The judge further ruled that Kanu’s seized radio transmitter be forfeited to the Federal Government, with DSS allowed to pursue forfeiture of additional exhibits.

The controversy emerged following objections by the International Council for Ifa Religion (ICIR), which accused the government and the late monarch’s family of violating the Ogun State Chieftaincy Law by bypassing traditional rites. According to the ICIR, Section 55 of the law mandates that kings be buried in line with cultural practices, not personal religious preferences. The council also criticized the sidelining of the Osugbo Confraternity, traditional custodians of such rites.

The burial, held on July 14, a day after the monarch’s passing at the age of 91, has sparked debates over the balance between religious freedom and cultural preservation. The ICIR argued that bypassing Yoruba customs not only disrespects tradition but also endangers the continuity of indigenous practices. They signaled their intent to seek legal redress to challenge what they called an erosion of heritage.

In response, the Ogun State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Sina Ogungbade (SAN), dismissed the threats as lacking legal merit. This was revealed in a video shared on X, formerly Twitter, by a user known as @TheBeninBlogger, who reposted a viral clip of a woman who had earlier used her platform to solicit support for the grieving father.

According to her, following the death of the man’s wife after childbirth, her fans rallied around and donated items worth millions to support the newborn twins.

These included baby food, clothes, wipes, diapers, shoes, and other essentials, all stocked in a shop for the twins’ upkeep.

However, she revealed that the man sold everything to a woman in Benin for just ₦1.2 million.

“This morning, we got a call from the Ministry of Justice. Baba Twins wants to go to the bank to withdraw ₦500,000 from the children’s account,” she said in the emotional video.

She added, “All the baby food, the wipes, the pampers, the clothes, the shoes — everything that fans donated, Papa Twins sold everything to a woman in Benin. Everything in that shop was worth over ₦5 million. He sold it all for ₦1.2 million.”

She noted that the state ministry contacted her as the man attempted to withdraw funds meant for the children.
