  • Supreme Court Upholds Death Sentence for Maryam Sanda

The Supreme Court has reaffirmed the death sentence passed on Maryam Sanda for the killing of her husband, Bilyamin Bello, in a split 4–1 judgment. The apex court dismissed her appeal, holding that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and that the Court of Appeal was right to uphold the trial court’s verdict.

In the lead judgment delivered by Justice Moore Adumein, the court ruled that all issues raised by Sanda lacked merit and affirmed the sentence of death by hanging earlier imposed by an Abuja High Court on January 27, 2020, for the 2017 stabbing incident at their Abuja residence.

The Supreme Court also faulted the exercise of executive powers by President Bola Tinubu to reduce her sentence to 12 years while an appeal was still pending, stressing that such intervention was improper in a culpable homicide case under active judicial consideration.

Despite having spent about six years and eight months at Suleja Prison, Sanda was included in a recent presidential pardon on compassionate grounds. The Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said the clemency considered the best interests of her children, citing her good conduct, remorse, and positive influence while in custody.

  • Death Toll in Adamawa Shooting Rises to 11 as Community Demands Probe From Tinubu, Defence Chiefs

The Pene Da Bwate Development Association (PDBDA) has announced that the death toll from the military shooting of women protesters in Lamurde LGA, Adamawa State, has risen to 11, including an 11-year-old girl. The group is demanding an immediate, independent investigation by President Bola Tinubu and Nigeria’s defence leadership, describing the killings as reckless and targeted. PDBDA linked the violence to longstanding tensions from a land dispute and referenced earlier alleged military air raids in 2017 that reportedly killed over 100 people. While the Adamawa State government praised security agencies for “swift intervention,” the community insists the shooting of unarmed women must not be ignored and is calling for justice, accountability, and an end to recurring violence.

  • Police Escort Withdrawal: Pres. Tinubu Should Be Held Responsible If Anything Happens to A Lawmaker — Rep. Jimbo Says

House of Representatives member Clement Jimbo has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s directive ordering the withdrawal of police security from VIPs, warning it exposes lawmakers and politicians to greater d+nger.

Speaking on Channels TV’s The Morning Brief, the Akwa Ibom lawmaker said the order puts legislators—especially those from the North—at heightened risk. “You are further exposing them to insecurity, and their lives could be in d+nger,” he said.

Jimbo, an APC member representing Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Constituency, argued that the government’s primary duty is the security and welfare of citizens, citing Sections 12 and 14 of the Constitution. “If the federal government is failing in this constitutional provision and anything happens to a lawmaker as a result of this directive, Mr President should be held accountable,” he said.

He urged President Tinubu to reverse the order immediately and instead formalise the security arrangement to generate national revenue. Jimbo suggested recruiting at least 15,000 youths into the police or creating a private security unit dedicated to VIP protection. “Those of us that have this security personnel around us are not free. We pay for it,” he added, arguing that Nigeria could earn “a minimum of N20 trillion annually” from regulated VIP security services.

Jimbo also rejected the idea that only politicians are VIPs. “Every single Nigerian is a VIP,” he said, insisting that anyone who needs protection should have the right to hire security personnel. President Tinubu ordered the withdrawal of police from VIPs on 23 November. The Special Protection Unit has begun implementation after an audit revealed 11,566 officers assigned to VIP duty.

Although the Senate has appealed for an exemption, Tinubu maintained that the redeployment is “not negotiable,” directing the NSA, Minister of Police Affairs, and IGP to enforce compliance. He stressed that police officers must serve the general public, particularly the most vulnerable—not a select group of VIPs.

  • Withdraw Mine? Then Withdraw the President’s, Vice President’s, Others Too — Sen. Ningi Condemns Selective Enforcement of Police Escort Order

The Senate session turned heated on Tuesday after Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) sharply criticized the withdrawal of police orderlies attached to lawmakers, accusing the executive of enforcing President Bola Tinubu’s directive selectively.

Raising a Point of Order, Ningi said he woke up to discover that his only police orderly had been withdrawn, insisting he was not opposed to the President’s November 23, 2025 directive—which ordered police escorts attached to VIPs to return to regular security duty—but furious that lawmakers appeared to be the first targets. “I woke up today and was told my police orderly had been withdrawn. I have no problem with that, but I want the same action applied across the board—they should also withdraw the president’s, vice president’s, ministers’, and others’ police escorts,” he said, lamenting what he described as a double standard.

Ningi further fumed that while senators were stripped of protection, “businessmen, foreign nationals, and celebrity entertainers” were still moving around with full police escorts, openly flouting the presidential directive. His outburst prompted the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, to reveal that the Senate leadership had already held an emergency meeting to seek an exemption for lawmakers, warning that the sudden withdrawal exposed members to unnecessary d+nger. In the meantime, the Senate directed its Committee on Police Affairs to investigate the alleged selective enforcement. The committee has four weeks to report back to plenary.

  • AAC Accuses Tinubu Government of Human Rights Abuses, Demands Shutdown of Imo Police Tiger Base

The African Action Congress (AAC) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of enabling widespread human rights abuses by security agencies, calling for the immediate closure of the Imo Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, popularly known as Tiger Base. In a statement signed by the party’s spokesperson, Rex I. Elanu, the AAC alleged that the facility has been associated with unlawful detentions, enforced disappearances, torture, and extrajudicial killings—particularly targeting South-East residents.
The party also condemned the reported killing of 10 women protesters by Nigerian Army personnel in Adamawa State, describing the incident as a grave violation of citizens’ rights. AAC demanded independent investigations into both the Imo and Adamawa incidents and urged Nigerians to resist what it calls systemic oppression under the Tinubu administration, insisting that a revolutionary alternative is needed to protect citizens’ dignity and safety.

Justice Emeka Nwite ruled that the allegations were unfounded, marking what activist Adaramoye Michael Lenin described as a “historic victory.” The protesters had been detained for over a year after security agencies accused them of attempting to destabilise the country during nationwide demonstrations fuelled by economic hardship, insecurity, and public frustration under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Human rights groups consistently condemned the charges as politically motivated attempts to suppress dissent. With the ruling, all accused individuals have been fully discharged.

The directive follows a national debate reignited by Wole Soyinka, who criticised the excessively large convoy attached to Seyi Tinubu, calling it a misuse of security resources.
