Despite Abductions, Zamfara Keeps Schools Open with Tighter Security
The Zamfara State Government says it will not close schools despite recent mass student abductions in Kebbi and Niger states that have prompted several northern states to shut learning centres. Education Commissioner Wadatau Madawaki said Zamfara has introduced security measures and is working with security agencies to protect pupils, insisting schools can continue operating safely. He explained that Zamfara mostly runs day schools, unlike states with boarding facilities that are more vulnerable to night attacks, and noted that schools in high-risk areas remain closed. Some higher institutions will have extended holidays due to boarding students. The statement comes amid a wider wave of school kidnappings that has led many states—and the Federal Government—to order closures, triggered national concern, and prompted President Bola Tinubu to deploy security chiefs and prioritise rescue efforts.
