China Expands Space Warfare Capabilities, Says U.S. Military

The U.S. Department of Defense has warned that China is increasingly focusing on developing the means to challenge its rivals in space. According to the Pentagon’s 2024 annual report on China’s military power, Beijing is advancing technologies that could disrupt or destroy satellites, including co-orbital systems, anti-satellite missiles, electronic warfare tools, surveillance platforms, reusable spacecraft, and directed-energy weapons.

The report notes that China has spent years investing heavily in space operations. A recent reorganization of its military units responsible for space, cyber, and information warfare reflects Beijing’s efforts to create a more integrated and efficient command structure for space-related missions.

“The space enterprise continues to mature rapidly,” the Pentagon said, adding that China is dedicating significant resources to expanding all aspects of its space program — from military operations to civil and commercial projects.

While U.S. officials acknowledge China’s rapid progress, they say it still lags behind the United States. However, experts warn that China’s development of reusable launch systems could soon make it a far more formidable competitor in space.
