Soyinka Faults Trump’s Threat Of Military Invasion Of Nigeria

Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has criticised U.S. President Donald Trump for threatening military intervention in Nigeria, describing Trump’s comments as simplistic and based on a “pre-set mindset.” Speaking in Makurdi after meeting Governor Hyacinth Alia, Soyinka warned that Nigeria’s security challenges cannot be addressed with “guns blazing,” and urged respect for those working to resolve ongoing violence.

Trump recently designated Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern,” claiming that Christians face an existential threat and calling on U.S. lawmakers to investigate the situation. He also said the U.S. may act to protect Christian communities worldwide, even suggesting possible deployment of American forces.

President Bola Tinubu rejected Trump’s claims, insisting they do not reflect Nigeria’s reality and noting ongoing engagement with religious leaders to improve security.

In Washington, the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa held a hearing titled “A Serious, Well-Founded Wake-Up Call,” assessing religious-freedom concerns and Nigeria’s response. Witnesses—including officials, analysts, and religious leaders—presented mixed perspectives, from warnings of targeted violence to cautions against oversimplifying Nigeria’s complex crisis.
