2027: Peter Obi Urges ADC to Zone Presidency to the South for Unity, Equity
Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South in the interest of fairness, national unity, and cohesion.
Speaking in Ilọrin during the 2nd Annual Colloquium in honor of Associate Professor Abdulmumin Yinka Ajia, a former APC governorship aspirant in Kwara State, Obi emphasized the need for rotational leadership. He was represented by Dr. Tanko Yunusa, National Coordinator of the Obidients Movement.
This comes amid a recent move by a coalition of opposition parties—led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar—to adopt the ADC as a united platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027. The coalition appointed former Senate President David Mark and former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola as interim national chairman and secretary, respectively.
Despite Atiku’s interest in the ADC ticket, both Obi and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi—also part of the coalition—have pledged to serve only one four-year term if elected.
Obi questioned the rationale behind fielding another northern candidate, saying, “Why should we have a northerner again when the South should be allowed to complete its turn? Let’s promote unity and allow the North to take over afterward.”
He further urged the coalition to avoid political mistakes of the past, referencing the annulled 1993 election won by Moshood Abiola.
“Obi will contest in 2027, with or without the coalition ticket,” Yunusa affirmed. “The platform will be revealed at the appropriate time, but make no mistake—his ambition is alive, and his chances are bright.”
