INEC Yet to Show Readiness for Credible Polls — Atiku Accuses Tinubu of Using State Power to Intimidate Opposition


Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over what he described as the declining independence of Nigeria’s electoral system and the misuse of state power ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku, speaking through his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, in an interview with Punch Newspaper, accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of using government institutions, including anti-corruption agencies, to intimidate opposition leaders and force mass defections into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The Constitution provides for freedom of association. As a democrat, Atiku Abubakar will not dictate to others whom they associate with. But it is clear that the Tinubu-led APC has been using state power to coerce opposition figures,” he said.


According to Atiku, the wave of defections across political parties does not reflect genuine political conviction but rather self-preservation by politicians seeking protection and personal gain.

“All of these defectors do not have the people’s interest at heart. What they are doing is to protect their own interests,” he added.


The former Vice President emphasized that despite the ongoing political realignments, ordinary Nigerians remain the ultimate deciders of the 2027 election outcome.

“It is Nigerians — the long-suffering, impoverished citizens who can hardly feed, educate their children, or access basic healthcare — who will determine the fate of 2027. The battle line has been drawn between the forces of good and evil,” Atiku declared.


He expressed disappointment that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has yet to demonstrate genuine commitment to reforming the electoral process, warning that without concrete improvements, the 2027 elections could mirror past irregularities.

“There is no legitimate reason for the government to incentivize voluntary departure with a financial payoff,” said Neha Desai of the National Center for Youth Law.

Dr Suhail Anjum, 44, and the nurse referred to in the hearing as Nurse C were reportedly found in a “compromising position” by a shocked colleague. The consultant anaesthetist had asked another nurse to monitor a male patient during a procedure so he could take a comfort break. Instead, he left theatre five and went to another operating theatre, where the incident occurred.

Andrew Molloy, representing the General Medical Council (GMC), told the tribunal that Dr Anjum had been overseeing five cases in theatre five on September 16, 2013, and left during the third operation. Shortly afterward, Nurse NT entered theatre eight and found Dr Anjum and Nurse C engaged in sexual activity.

“She described seeing Nurse C with her trousers around her knees and underwear visible, while Dr Anjum was adjusting his own clothing,” Mr Molloy said. “Nurse NT was shocked and quickly left the theatre.”

Dr Anjum returned to theatre five after approximately eight minutes. No harm came to the patient, and the procedure continued without further incident. Nurse NT reported the matter to her line manager.

Before the case reached the GMC, Dr Anjum admitted to the facts, acknowledging that he had engaged in sexual activity with Nurse C and that his actions could have placed the patient at risk. At the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service hearing, he confirmed that he left Tameside Hospital in February 2024 and had returned to Pakistan, but expressed a desire to resume his career in the UK. He insisted the incident was a “one-off error of judgment” that would not be repeated.

Giving evidence, Dr Anjum described the incident as “shameful” and took responsibility for letting down his patient, colleagues, and the hospital trust. He acknowledged placing Nurse NT in an “awkward position” and apologised for the potential risk to the patient.

Dr Anjum attributed the lapse in judgment to stress in his personal life, following the premature birth of his youngest child in January 2023. He said the traumatic experience affected his mental health and wellbeing, which contributed to his actions at work.
