  • “A Brother in Struggle and Service” — President Tinubu Celebrates Senator Abu Ibrahim at 80 with Heartfelt Tribute

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has showered praises on his longtime friend and political ally, Senator Abu Ibrahim, as the elder statesman marks his 80th birthday.

In a touching message from the Presidency on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Tinubu described Senator Ibrahim as “a principled statesman, trusted ally, and patriot whose loyalty and wisdom have inspired generations.”

Reflecting on their decades-long friendship, the President recalled first meeting Senator Ibrahim in the Senate during the Third Republic in 1992, where their shared commitment to democracy and justice forged an unbreakable bond.

“Abu has been more than a friend — he is my brother,” Tinubu said, recounting how they stood together during the struggle against the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election.
“He stood in the line of fire when we reconvened the Senate in Lagos to condemn that criminal annulment. Even when released, he refused to leave until we were all free.”

Tinubu hailed Senator Ibrahim’s exceptional record of public service, including his two-term tenure in the Senate (2003–2019) representing Katsina South, and his key role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013.

“Senator Abu Ibrahim is a man whose integrity, courage, and loyalty remain unshaken,” the President said. “He embodies what Nigeria needs more of — principled leadership and selfless service.”

President Tinubu concluded by praying for long life and good health for the octogenarian, noting that his legacy will continue to inspire future leaders.

  • “We Didn’t Go There for Money!” — Sowore Recounts How He Rejected ₦800,000 from Late MKO Abiola in 1993

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has shared an inspiring story about his encounter with the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola (MKO) — a moment that, according to him, defined his lifelong commitment to principle over personal gain.

In a recent podcast interview, Sowore recalled visiting Abiola’s home as a student leader from the University of Lagos during the tense period following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. He described the billionaire’s mansion as “a living room as big as a stadium.”

During the visit, Abiola, known for his generosity, offered the students ₦800,000 — a massive sum at the time. However, to Abiola’s surprise, Sowore and his team refused the money.

“He was shocked,” Sowore said. “Abiola told us no one had ever rejected money from him. I told him we didn’t come for money — we came to stand for justice.”

When Abiola jokingly suggested that the money could at least cover transportation, Sowore humorously replied that “even if we took a helicopter from UNILAG, that amount was still too much.”

The activist explained that their decision was driven by integrity and the genuine desire to support Abiola’s democratic struggle — not for personal enrichment.

The story has since gone viral, resonating deeply with Nigerians who see it as a reminder of Sowore’s long-standing dedication to activism, truth, and integrity, values often missing in the nation’s political landscape.

  • Tinubu Appoints Rinsola Abiola as DG of Citizenship & Leadership Training Centre, Honoring MKO’s Legacy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Ms. Rinsola Abiola, daughter of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, as the new Director-General of the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre (CLTC).

Announced by Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga on Monday, the move underscores Tinubu’s push to strengthen leadership development and civic education nationwide.

Rinsola, an expert in strategic communication and government relations, previously served as Senior Special Assistant to the President. Her new role at the Abuja-based CLTC — dedicated to patriotism, leadership skills, and civic responsibility — carries symbolic weight, honoring her father’s legacy as the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election and a champion of Nigeria’s democracy.

In the same announcement, Tinubu appointed Nasir Bala Aminu Ja’oji as Senior Special Assistant on Citizenship and Leadership. Ja’oji, a known youth and women’s empowerment advocate, brings experience as a former Special Adviser on Mobilisation to the Kano State Governor.

The duo is tasked with advancing the CLTC’s mission to promote national unity and leadership excellence. While many praise Abiola’s qualifications and pedigree, critics raise concerns over possible nepotism in political appointments. The Presidency insists the choice was based purely on competence and a proven track record.

Stakeholders now look to Rinsola’s leadership to revitalize the CLTC, expand youth programs, and strengthen civic engagement across Nigeria.

  • Abiola’s Wife, Doyin, Is Dead.

Wife of the Concord Publisher and winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, Moshood Abiola, Doyin, has passed away.

Naija News learnt that the eminent journalist died at 9.15 pm on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.

According to the Nation, Doyin’s death resulted from an illness.

Doyin was the former managing director and publisher of National Concord.

She was also the first Nigerian woman to be an editor of a Nigerian daily newspaper.

Like the numerous wives of the late Abiola, Doyin endured the storm and stress triggered by the annulment of the historic poll and the tribulations that followed on the home front and in Concord.

Doyin Abiola attended the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, where she earned a degree in English and Drama in 1969. After graduation, she started working with the Daily Sketch Newspaper and also wrote a column in the newspaper called ‘Tiro,’ which addressed sundry issues of public concern, including gender matters.

In 1970, Doyin left Daily Sketch Newspaper and travelled to the United States to pursue a master’s degree programme in Journalism. Upon her return, she was employed as a Features Writer at Daily Times and rose to become the Group Features Editor. She later attended New York University and obtained a PhD in communications and political science in 1979.

After Doyin’s Ph.d. programme, she returned to the Daily Times and was deployed to the editorial board, where she worked with other experienced editors like Stanley Macebuh, Dele Giwa, and Amma Ogan. However, it was to be a short stay as the newly formed National Concord newspaper invited her to be its pioneer daily editor.

  • India recovers data from black boxes after deadly plane crash.

Indian investigators have successfully retrieved data from the black boxes of a Boeing plane, after it crashed in one of the deadliest air disasters in decades, the government said Thursday.

All but one of the 242 people on board the Air India flight were killed on June 12 when the jet crashed in the western city of Ahmedabad, where at least 19 others were left dead.

Two weeks after the disaster, the civil aviation ministry said investigators have started “the data extraction process” from the plane’s cockpit voice and flight data recorders.

The analysis… is underway. These efforts aim to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the accident and identify contributing factors to enhance aviation safety and prevent future occurrences,” a ministry statement said.

The two black boxes were found within days of the crash, but were only flown to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau in New Delhi on Tuesday.

One of the victims’ relatives said they were waiting for answers.

“For now, all we know is the plane took off and then fell. How? Why? Nobody knows. And we want to know. We deserve to know,” said Imtiyaz Ali, whose brother was on the plane with his wife and two children.

“I refuse to believe that our aviation sector is this bad that we still don’t have even a slight indication about what went wrong,” he told AFP on Wednesday.

Air India said last week that the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was “well-maintained” and that the pilots were accomplished flyers.

Investigators have recovered more than 100 mobile phones with the aim of retrieving any recordings that “may provide clues about the final moments of the flight”, Ahmedabad police commissioner GS Malik said last week.

  • 138 million children in child labour globally – ILO, UNICEF
The International Labour Organisation and United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund have revealed that no fewer than 138 million children were engaged in child labour globally in 2024.

The United Nations agencies added that an estimated 54 million of them were involved in hazardous work that posed serious risks to their health, safety, and development.

This is according to a joint report by both agencies, titled “Child Labour: Global Estimates 2024, trends and the road forward”, released ahead of the World Day Against Child Labour marked annually on June 12.

The figure represents a decline of more than 20 million since 2020, reversing a previous spike recorded between 2016 and 2020, it added.

Despite this progress, the report noted that the world has failed to meet its target of eliminating child labour by 2025.

Reacting to the report, ILO Director-General, Gilbert Houngbo, expressed optimism that the findings of the report offer hope and show that progress is possible.

“Children belong in school, not in labour. Parents must be supported and have access to decent work so that they can afford to ensure that their children are in classrooms and not selling things in markets or on family farms to help support their family.

“But we must not be blindsided by the fact that we still have a long way to go before we achieve our goal of eliminating child labour,” said Houngbo

  • PRESIDENT TINUBU DELIVERS FIRST STATE OF THE NATION ADDRESS ON JUNE 12

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will at 10:00 a.m. today, deliver his first State of the Nation address before a joint session of the National Assembly.

This is in commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day.

The event marks the anniversary of the June 12, 1993 presidential election—widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history—which was controversially annulled by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.

President Tinubu’s address to federal lawmakers is expected to focus on national priorities, democratic progress, and the overall state of governance under his administration.

June 12 was declared Democracy Day by former President Muhammadu Buhari, replacing May 29 as the official date for commemorating Nigeria’s return to civil rule. Buhari also posthumously recognised Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, the presumed winner of the 1993 poll, as President, and conferred on him the nation’s highest honour—the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).

Abiola, a business mogul had declared himself president in 1994 at Epetedo, Lagos, after months of failed attempts to reclaim his mandate. He was arrested, charged with treason, and died in detention on July 7, 1998.

To give more value to today’s occasion, the Federal Government announced the cancellation of the traditional military parade.
