  • “No Bloodshed!” — Historian Reveals How Gowon’s Final Words During 1975 Coup Showed His True Love for Peace

In a recent interview on the Edmund Obilo Show, historian and author Adebayo Adeolu, who wrote “Sani Abacha: Nigeria’s Most Powerful Defence Minister and Head of State,” revealed a powerful and often-overlooked detail about General Yakubu Gowon’s fall from power in 1975.

Adeolu disclosed that when news of the coup reached Gowon, the then Head of State ordered his aides and security personnel not to resist or spill any blood.

“When Gowon was going to be overthrown, he said, ‘make sure nobody’s killed, we have seen enough of it,’” Adeolu quoted.

According to the historian, Gowon’s reaction reflected his deep weariness with Nigeria’s cycles of violence — particularly after the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970), which he had led. Instead of clinging to power, Gowon chose peace over conflict, showing a level of restraint rare among military rulers of his time.

“That single moment showed Gowon’s moral strength and his genuine desire for a peaceful Nigeria,” Adeolu said, describing the act as one of the most humane moments in Nigeria’s military history.

Gowon, who was attending the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) Summit in Uganda when he was ousted, quietly accepted his removal and later devoted his life to reconciliation and peacebuilding — cementing his reputation as a statesman of grace and humility.

  • Wike Slams N5m Fines on Ganduje, Idiagbon, Oyinlola, Others for Illegal Land Conversion.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has imposed N5 million fines on former APC Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje and several prominent Nigerians for illegally altering the use of their properties in Abuja.

The sanctions affect both living and deceased persons, as well as public and private institutions, accused of converting their lands without approval, thereby violating the right of occupancy terms.

In a newspaper notice, Wike directed all affected allottees to pay the penalty fee within 30 days, by September 10, 2025. The order followed a review of land use in 15 streets across Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse 2, Garki 1, and Garki 2. He also approved the issuance of new title documents reflecting updated land use for a fresh 99-year term once conditions are met.

The FCT administration alleged that Ganduje converted a residence at Adetokunbo Ademola, Wuse 2, into a banking hall without approval. A property at Gana Street, Maitama, belonging to the late Gen. Tunde Idiagbon, was turned into Serendib Hotel and Suites, while former Osun State Governor Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola allegedly converted a residence at Yakubu Gowon Crescent, Asokoro, into Zhouyi Hotel.

Two former Chief Justices of Nigeria were also listed. Justice Atanda Fatai-Williams’ Maitama residence was reportedly changed into a wood factory and shopping centre, while Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar’s land was converted into a supermarket.

Senator Shehu Sani was sanctioned for turning a residence at Aminu Kano Crescent into a showroom. Others include former Governors Forum DG Okauru Okauru (residence converted to showroom), Lt. Gen. Rufus Kupolati (residence to gym), former FCT Minister Abba Gana (residence at Usuma, Maitama, redesigned into a mall), the NNPC (residential property to NNPC Medical Services), and the Nigeria Police (public place converted for POWA use).

  • Tinubu Didn't Make Buhari President in 2015 – Boss Mustapha Declares.

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, has dismissed the popular claim that President Bola Tinubu was responsible for making Muhammadu Buhari Nigeria’s president in 2015.

Speaking at the launch of “According to the President: Lessons from a Presidential Spokesperson’s Experience”, a new book by former presidential spokesman Garba Shehu, Mustapha argued that Buhari’s long-standing support base played the defining role in his victory.

According to Mustapha, Buhari already commanded 12.2 million votes prior to the APC merger, and the combined contribution of the legacy parties, including Tinubu's political machinery, added only about 3.2 million votes, bringing the total to 15.4 million votes in the 2015 presidential election.

“The merger helped, but it didn’t make Buhari president. He already had a massive voter base,” Mustapha stated.

At the same event, President Tinubu, represented by current SGF Senator George Akume, acknowledged former President Buhari’s efforts, saying:

“Nation-building is a relay. President Buhari laid the foundation for the reforms we are now consolidating.”

Also present was former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, who praised Buhari’s conduct in office. Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Buhari’s former Chief of Staff, called for a more deliberate process in selecting Nigeria’s future leaders.

Former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Atiku Abubakar, Femi Adesina, and other key figures who served in the Buhari administration were also in attendance.

Garba Shehu’s book aims to provide insights and reflections from his time as a presidential spokesperson, preserving lessons for future generations.

  • Civil War: Gowon distorted Aburi Accord history, Group claims.

ABUJA – A group, Rising Sun, has accused Nigeria’s former Head of State, retired General Yakubu Gowon, of distorting the history behind the failure of the historic Aburi Accord of 1967, which they claim led to the Nigerian Civil War.

The group, in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, asserted that Gowon’s recent explanation for the Accord’s breakdown was misleading and an attempt to rewrite history.

The statement, jointly signed by Chief Maxwell Dede, President of Rising Sun, and Rev. Fr. Augustine Odimmegwa, the group’s Secretary, condemned Gowon’s claim that the Accord failed because General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu demanded that regional governors’ control the military.

Instead, the group argued that the demand for regional control of security forces was a legitimate push for justice and true federalism.

  • ECOWAS @50: Delegates Convene in Lagos to Mark Regional Bloc’s Golden Jubilee

Delegates from across West Africa have gathered at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a regional body committed to unity, peace, and economic integration.

The golden jubilee celebrations, which were initially launched in Accra, Ghana, in April, continue in Nigeria’s commercial capital with a series of high-profile events.

Nigeria’s President and current Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, joined other dignitaries, including the only surviving founding father of the organization, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), who was instrumental in the signing of the original treaty in Lagos in 1975.

Earlier in the day, a special session reflecting on ECOWAS’ founding and progress took place at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Following the session, regional leaders and top ECOWAS officials are expected to proceed to Eko Hotel for the main celebration.

According to a statement by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Touray will deliver the welcome address.

President Tinubu is scheduled to speak on the organization’s milestones over the past five decades. Also expected to give a retrospective analysis is Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, Chairman of the NIIA and former Minister of External Affairs, who will highlight the community’s 50-year journey—a topic that will also be explored in panel discussions.

General Yakubu Gowon is expected to participate in all scheduled events and deliver a keynote address at the Eko Hotel ceremony.
