NIGERIA-BANGKOK TO UNLOCK POTENTIAL IN AFRICA-ASIA COOPERATION

Nigeria and Thailand have agreed to take their bilateral relationship to a strategic level. The commitment was made during a high-level meeting in Bangkok today, between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar and his Thai counterpart, Sihasak Phuangketkeow.

In a statement, Yusuf Tuggar, proposed for Thailand to help bridge the regions, by fostering collaboration between the African bloc, ECOWAS, and the Southeast Asian bloc, ASEAN, foreseeing eventual ASEAN-ECOWAS Summit in the long-term.

Both sides discussed building on Nigeria's crude oil exports and Thailand's rice and machinery exports, and extending to scholarship programmes for Nigerian students.

They agreed to diversify into new areas like agro-processing, renewable energy, manufacturing, and ICT.

While on security, Yusuf Tuggar stressed on cooperation against transnational crimes like drug and human trafficking, proposing increased intelligence-sharing and joint training.

To solidify this enhanced partnership, the Minister urged for speedy conclusion of pending bilateral agreements on trade, investment, and culture, with a view to establishing a high-level joint commission.

The meeting concluded with Nigeria reaffirming Thailand as its strategic partner in Asia and extended an invitation for reciprocal high-level visits.

Tinubu also ordered the immediate training, arming, and deployment of additional forest guards to combat kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism. Nigeria Police Begin Recruitment of Retired Officers as Ad-Hoc Trainers for New Recruits Nationwide

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a nationwide directive requesting the submission of names of retired officers to serve as ad-hoc instructors in police training institutions. The directive, dated December 8, 2025, targets officers who retired between 2020 and 2025 from the ranks of Inspector to Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP). Eligible candidates must be well-versed in the Police Act 2020, ACJA 2015, and other core regulations, with expertise in areas such as drill, musketry, unarmed combat, legal studies, and professional studies. Commands across all states and specialised units have been instructed to compile and forward detailed lists of qualified retirees before December 18, 2025. The order was marked “immediate” and “very important” by Force Headquarters.

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has executed an eviction order on the former Cubana Lounge property in Wuse II, returning full possession to businessman Collins Onwuzulike after months of legal disputes with socialite Obi Cubana. The enforcement—marked by tense moments involving alleged thugs and the abrupt disappearance of police escorts—saw court sheriffs dismantle equipment and secure the building for the new owner. The ownership dispute dates back to a ₦2 billion purchase concluded in 2024, which conflicting court orders had previously stalled. With the restraining order from a Bwari court now expired, bailiffs officially handed the property’s keys to Onwuzulike’s legal team, ending the long-running battle over the Abuja hotspot.

ARMY, EFCC in Fresh Synergy against Graft in Edo

The Commander, 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General A. O. Balogun has pledged the support of the Nigeria Army to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in its fight against corruption, economic and financial crimes.

Balogun made this pledge on Monday December 8, 2025 while on a courtesy visit to the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Commission. According to the General, who recently assumed office as the Commander of 4 Brigade, Benin City, the EFCC needs the support of every Nigerian given its role as the foremost anti-corruption agency in Nigeria.

The General further noted that the Commission needed the support of critical stakeholders to successfully block or trace the movement of funds to nip financial offences in the bud. "If we can detect the flow of funds, we can nip such crimes in the bud."

He disclosed that the Commission and the military has had a long history of collaboration, including training of personnel, curtailing illegal oil bunkering and a host of others . "One of the reasons for our visit is to familiarise ourselves with the leadership of the Commission so that we can build on the existing relationships between the two institutions. It is not about competition but about collaboration. It doesn't matter who kills the snake as much as the snake is killed."
He revealed the military is willing to collaborate and offer any kind of support to the Commission whenever it is called upon to do so.

Responding, the Acting Zonal Director of the Benin, Deputy Commander of the Commission, DCE Sa'ad Hanafi Sa'ad commended the army general and his men for their visit. He noted that synergy and collaboration were crucial as no single agency or institution can effectively eliminate crimes and criminality in the society. 'We build synergy and collaborate with relevant stakeholders and the Nigeria Army is a critical stakeholder. Our interest and your interest are the same, which is to have a better Nigeria and so we are willing to collaborate with you."

Northern States Governors' Forum Appoints Ezekiel Gomos as Director-General to Strengthen Regional Coordination

The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF), under the leadership of its Chairman and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has approved the appointment of Mr. Ezekiel Gomos, OFR, as Director-General of the Forum’s Secretariat.

The appointment is in line with the Forum’s renewed commitment to strengthening its institutional capacity and improving coordination among the 19 northern states in addressing the region’s pressing challenges.

According to the Forum, creating the office of Director-General is a strategic step towards repositioning the Secretariat as a more effective hub for policy coordination, collective action and long-term development planning.

Mr. Gomos, a former Secretary to the Plateau State Government, is an accomplished development economist and policy expert with a distinguished career spanning public service, governance reform, private-sector development and human capital advancement.

His experience includes senior roles in high-impact institutions such as the New Nigeria Development Company (NNDC) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

In addition, he has been Lead Consultant and Head of Faculty at the Jos Business School (JBS), a centre dedicated to entrepreneurship development, leadership training, and policy dialogue.

For nearly two decades, Mr. Gomos has served as a resource person at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, contributing to the training of senior leaders across Nigeria in policy, strategy and national development.

The new DG's academic credentials include graduate and postgraduate degrees from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and the University of East Anglia, UK. He is also a recipient of several prestigious international fellowships, including the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship (University of Minnesota), the British Chevening Scholarship and the UNDP Fellowship at the ILO Training Centre in Turin.

Gomos has attended senior executive programmes at Harvard Kennedy School, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and Durham University Business School.

Presenting the appointment letter, Governor Inuwa Yahaya charged Mr. Gomos to apply his extensive expertise in strategic leadership, institutional development and policy management to strengthen the NSGF Secretariat into a robust platform for collective security coordination, regional economic cooperation and sustainable development across the North.

The NSGF Chairman expressed confidence that the appointment will usher in a new era of deeper collaboration, improved coordination and more coherent regional responses to the North’s most critical challenges.

NIGERIA–INDIA ADVANCES DEFENCE PARTNERSHIP AS INDIAN DEFENCE ADVISER VISIT COAS

The strategic defence partnership between Nigeria and India received a significant boost on 9 December 2025 when the Indian Defence Adviser to Nigeria, Colonel Manoj Singh, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu Nigerian Army Medal, at the Army Headquarters, Abuja. The visit reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to strengthening bilateral military cooperation and advancing shared security interests.

Colonel Singh while making his remarks commended the Nigerian Army for its sustained efforts in tackling security challenges nationwide and expressed appreciation for the warm reception. He emphasized India’s willingness to broaden defence cooperation, expand training opportunities for Nigerian Army personnel and deepen technical exchanges in critical areas of mutual benefit.

In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu stressed the importance of maintaining an enduring partnership with the Indian Armed Forces. He described India’s long-standing support in military training, capacity building and defence development as invaluable, noting the need to further enhance collaboration in counter-terrorism operations, intelligence sharing, equipment support and professional military education.

The visit featured the presentation of souvenirs to the Defence Adviser by the COAS as a symbol of friendship and continued cooperation. Colonel Singh also signed the visitors’ book and a group photograph.

NIGERIA POLICE FORCE CONDUCTS PRE-DEPLOYMENT TRAINING ON PREVENTING THE RECRUITMENT AND USE OF CHILDREN IN ARMED CONFLICT

The Nigeria Police Force has conducted a week-long Pre-Deployment Training on Preventing the Recruitment and Use of Children in Armed Conflict held at the Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja. The programme was declared open by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, represented by AIG Aminu Baba Raji, AIG Training and Development and fully equipped officers with child-sensitive policing during internal security operations.

The programme was delivered in partnership with the Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace and Security, featuring international facilitators and certified Nigeria Police Trainers-of-Trainers. Officers were trained to detect and prevent child recruitment and to recognize that children associated with armed groups are primarily victims deserving confidentiality, empathy, and protection.

In his remarks, the IGP stressed that children remain among the most vulnerable in situations of violence and that their recruitment by armed actors whether as fighters, spies, or in other roles, is a grave violation of their rights and a threat to national security. He emphasized the need for officers deployed to conflict-affected areas to identify these risks and respond with professionalism, sensitivity, and gender-responsive approaches.

The training further strengthened existing Nigeria Police child-protection initiatives such as the Safer Schools Programme and POCACOV. A total of 25 officers were certified as ready for deployment to conflict-affected areas.

IGP Egbetokun expressed appreciation to the organizers for their support and assured that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to upholding human rights and enhancing child-protection capacity through continuous training and strong partnerships.

Germany Approves Voluntary Military Service for 18-Year-Olds Amid Rising Security Concerns

Germany’s parliament, the Bundestag, has voted to introduce voluntary military service, marking a major shift in the country’s defense policy following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The move is part of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s plan to build Europe’s strongest conventional army.

Starting January 2026, all 18-year-olds will receive a mandatory questionnaire asking if they are interested in joining the armed forces. The form will be compulsory for men and voluntary for women. From July 2027, all 18-year-old men will undergo medical examinations to assess their fitness for possible military service.

The decision has sparked widespread opposition among students, with strikes planned in as many as 90 cities. Protesters argue that compulsory training promotes drill and obedience, offering little benefit while disrupting young people’s lives.

Currently, Germany’s armed forces, the Bundeswehr, have around 182,000 personnel, with plans to increase the number to 260,000 by the early 2030s, supplemented by 200,000 reservists. The government says that while service is voluntary, compulsory measures could be considered if too few volunteers come forward or if security thr+ats escalate.

NUC Receives €3m to Kick-start ICT Projects in Universities

A heightened push to upgrade digital infrastructure in Nigerian universities has received a major boost, with an initial three million euro released to kick-start ICT projects in ten selected institutions.

The fund is the first tranche of the $40 million loan secured from the French Development Agency to strengthen teaching, research, and administrative efficiency through technology.

The announcement was made by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, at the inaugural meeting of the 13th NUC Board in Abuja.

Professor Ribadu says, since assuming office, the Commission has intensified efforts to reposition universities through research driven reforms, entrepreneurship development, digital transformation, and enhanced skills training.

At the meeting, the Board outlines five priority pillars that will shape its mandate: performance evaluation, improving global university rankings, expanding digital literacy, strengthening research output, and driving key institutional reforms across the system.

The FCT High Court has scheduled December 9, 2025, for the mention of Tonye Patrick Cole’s ₦40 billion defamation lawsuit against FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Channels Television. Cole, the 2023 APC governorship candidate in Rivers State, accuses Wike of making false and damaging statements during a September 18 broadcast, alleging financial misconduct involving state resources, Rivers State gas, and the Olympia Hotel. Represented by senior lawyer J.S. Okutepa, Cole seeks ₦40 billion in damages, ₦500 million in legal costs, a public apology, retraction of the statements, and a perpetual injunction restraining further defamatory publications. The defendants have been ordered to enter appearance within 21 days of receiving the writ.
