  • Japan is strengthening its defenses amid growing pressure from China

The government has begun building a “missile archipelago” across the Ryukyu Islands near Taiwan.

According to Bloomberg, this is Japan’s largest military expansion in decades and a direct response to China’s increasing assertiveness.

Tokyo is deploying new units and F-35 fighters to Kyushu and reinforcing its presence on Okinawa — an island that could be among the first targets if a conflict over Taiwan erupts.

Chinese and Japanese officials have repeatedly traded sharp statements in recent months.

And over the weekend, a Chinese fighter reportedly locked its radar onto Japanese aircraft — an action Tokyo viewed as a dangerous provocation.

    By: Zagazola Makama

Nigerian Army troops of Joint Task Force Sector One, Operation Udo Ka (OPUK), in collaboration with the Neighbourhood Watch, have rescued 14 kidnapped victims during a coordinated operation at Orokam Forest, a border area linking Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State and Ogbadigbo Local Government Area of Benue State.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the operation was conducted on Friday at about 1:30 p.m., following credible intelligence from locals indicating the presence of a suspected kidnappers’ hideout in the forest.

The source said troops deployed in Udenu LGA swiftly mobilised to the location alongside vigilante personnel of the Neighbourhood Watch.

“While approaching the hideout, the criminals opened fire on the troops. The joint team responded with a high volume of fire, forcing the kidnappers to flee in disarray and abandon the kidnapped victims,” the source said.

The sources said 14 abducted persons, who were returning from a burial ceremony over the weekend before being kidnapped, were rescued unhurt.

The sources added that preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were abducted from two separate communities Ezimo Agu in Udenu LGA, Enugu State, and Orokam in Ogbadigbo LGA, Benue State.

According to the source, the victims were subsequently handed over to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Udenu Division, for onward reunification with their families.

The source added that the troops expended 70 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition during the engagement and returned to base at about 7:21 p.m. without any incident.

The sources noted that troops had intensified monitoring of the general area to deny criminal elements freedom of action.

  • Benue Insecurity: Zaki Biam Residents Pay Kidnappers N100,000 for Protection.

Residents of Zaki Biam in Ukum LGA, Benue State, are gripped by fear as criminal activities escalate, including kidnapping threats, motorcycle theft, and suspected cult operations.

A community source told Vanguard correspondent over the weekend that residents have been receiving calls from unknown individuals demanding money and threatening abduction.

“People are scared because these callers sound serious and very coordinated. We need urgent help before things get out of hand,” he said.

He added that insecurity has worsened due to the activities of an alleged cult group that reportedly meets at the shop of its suspected leader, located at the former SSS office along Yam Market bypass.

“These boys meet both during the day and very late at night. Their activities are suspicious, and everyone in the area is worried about what they are planning.”

Motorcycle theft has also surged. Thieves reportedly target riders at night, creating heightened tension in a community where motorcycles are essential for transport and livelihood. “Because all the motorcycle thefts have happened at night, people no longer move around freely once it gets dark,” he said.

The fear is intensified by kidnapping threats. “One case involved a POS operator who allegedly paid ₦100,000 after being threatened by criminals who warned they would kidnap him if he refused. Imagine receiving a call telling you to send money or you will be taken away. That is the kind of fear people here are living with every day,” he added.

Residents are calling for urgent intervention from security agencies. “We are appealing to the government and security operatives to come to our rescue. Lives and property are no longer safe, and something must be done urgently,” he lamented.

Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful at press time.

  • Trump takes fresh aim at Nigeria as US Africa command proposes options for attack.

US President Donald Trump took fresh aim at two of Africa’s biggest economies, renewing his threat of an attack on Islamist militants in Nigeria and questioning South Africa’s role in the Group of 20 days before it hosts a global summit.

Trump in particular berated the Nigerian government for failing to contain the islamic militancy in the north of the country that has killed thousands and said his forces will be made to.do the work but there will be peice like he’ll to be paid.

In a video posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump reiterated his claim that the Nigerian government is failing to prevent the killing of Christians and said he’s asked the Pentagon to prepare for “possible action” unless the West African nation acts.

“The Nigerian government better move fast before its too late,” Trump said. “If they don’t there is going be hell to pay.”
The fresh threat against Nigeria came after a New York Times report that the US Africa command had proposed three options for attacking Nigeria.

Three defense officials said the plans from the command had three options — light, medium and heavy — and were intended to be escalatory. The light option, the officials said, included what the military called partner-enabled operations. Under that option, the U.S. military and the State Department would support government forces in Nigeria to target Boko Haram and other Islamic insurgents who have attacked, kidnapped and murdered civilians, mostly in northern Nigeria, where sectarian and ethnic violence has raged for almost 20 years.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, a Muslim whose wife is a Christian pastor, said on Sunday he was committed to working with the US and international community to protect all faiths. But “the characterization of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality,” he said.

The nation of 230 million — roughly split between Christians and Muslims — has suffered from years of ethnic violence, with more than 20,000 killed since 2020, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data nonprofit, which tracks such incidents around the world. Of the almost 12,000 attacks in that period, the vast bulk were not religiously motivated.
While Trump’s initial comments over the weekend led to some selling of Nigerian bonds earlier this week, the country was still able to sell $2.35 billion of new debt to global investors on Wednesday. Demand was big, with orders topping $12 billion.

The US president also said South Africa — the continent’s biggest economy — shouldn’t form part of the G20. Pretoria is preparing to host a summit of the group’s leaders on Nov. 22-23, though Trump reiterated that he won’t be attending, with Vice President JD Vance travelling to the forum in his stead.

“South Africa shouldn’t even be in the Gs anymore, because what’s happened there is bad,” he said at an America Business Forum event in Miami.

Trump has previously made the false claim that there’s a genocide against White Afrikaner farmers in South Africa, which led him to offer them refugee status in the US.

  • "FG Set to Ban Foreign Airlines from Selling Tickets in Dollars" — NANTA President.

The Federal Government is set to put an end to the sale of airline tickets in foreign currency by international carriers, according to Yinka Folami, President of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA).

Speaking during a cultural and tourism programme in Lagos over the weekend, Folami described the practice of cross-border foreign currency trading as “a crime against the economy.”

“Those of us in the aviation sector know that until Nigeria has a strong national carrier to fill the gap, these issues will continue. I am pleased to inform Nigerians that the government is actively addressing the sale of tickets in foreign currency, and this is the latest update,” he said.

He emphasized that foreign airlines selling tickets in dollars violates regulations and adds pressure on the naira and the country’s foreign exchange reserves. Folami noted that the government is responding to concerns raised by travel agencies over this persistent challenge.

The NANTA president further stated that there is no longer any justification for selling tickets in foreign currency in Nigeria, calling the practice outdated and predicting that it will soon be phased out from the country’s aviation industry.

He also highlighted the importance of a strong domestic airline, urging Nigerians to support Air Peace. “The airline has taken bold steps by launching London routes from Lagos and Abuja. It is both a patriotic duty and a responsibility for Nigerians to support and pray for the airline’s continued success and sustainability,” Folami added.

  • Nnamdi Kanu: Umuahia locked down as shops, schools, banks close.

Abia State capital on Monday was totally locked down as residents decided to withdraw from their daily businesses and operations in solidarity with the #FreeNnamdiKanu march being championed by rights activist Omoleye Sowore.

The roads were virtually empty except for the occasional movement of tricycles and a few vehicles.

Economic and commercial activities were totally paralysed as shops, markets, banks, petrol stations, motor parks did not open for business.

Similarly, schools, both private and public, did not open for studies.

It was gathered that some of the schools had, over the weekend, sent messages to parents asking them not to bring their children and wards to school on Monday because of the #FreeKanu protest.

A convoy of joint security patrol vans was sighted along Uwakala Road, probably monitoring the situation.

Traders at the popular Isigate market did not show up for business, as their wares and tables were all covered.

Most of the major streets, including Post Office/Abia Tower Junction, FMC/Bank Road Junction, and Umuahia, visited by our correspondent, were a ghost of themselves.

  • History Made: Robotic Surgeon Performs Nigeria’s First UroLift Surgery.

Nigeria has recorded a major medical breakthrough as a hospital in Lagos successfully performed the nation’s first UroLift surgery, marking a new milestone in the treatment of prostate enlargement and minimally invasive healthcare in West Africa.

The landmark procedure was carried out at The Prostate Clinic (TPC), Victoria Island, under the leadership of Professor Kingsley Ekwueme, a renowned consultant urologist and expert in laparoscopic and robotic surgery.

Announcing the feat over the weekend, Prof. Ekwueme described the UroLift, also known as the Prostatic Urethral Lift (PUL), as “a new era in prostate care for Nigerian men.” He confirmed that the patient recovered well and was discharged on the same day without any complications.

“This is the first UroLift procedure in Nigeria, and it represents a new dawn for men living with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH),” he said. “It’s simple, safe, and effective — relieving urinary obstruction without the usual side effects of traditional prostate surgery.”

The UroLift system is a minimally invasive treatment that uses small implants to lift and hold enlarged prostate tissue away from the urethra, thereby improving urine flow. Unlike conventional surgery, it doesn’t involve cutting, heating, or removing tissue, and helps preserve sexual and bladder function.

Prof. Ekwueme noted that the introduction of the UroLift system would significantly reduce medical tourism, save foreign exchange, and attract more investment in advanced medical technology within the country.

Healthcare experts have hailed the achievement as a turning point in Nigeria’s medical landscape, commending The Prostate Clinic for championing innovation in men’s health. They expressed optimism that this success would inspire other hospitals to adopt modern urological technologies and strengthen Nigeria’s position as a regional hub for advanced medical care.

  • Nigerians Groan as Cooking Gas Price Hits ₦1,800 Per Kilogram Amid Shortage.

The cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has surged sharply across several Nigerian cities, including Lagos, Ogun, and Ibadan, following a nationwide shortage.

The scarcity was triggered by a three-day strike by oil workers, which disrupted gas supply and distribution across the country. Prices have also spiked in other states such as Port Harcourt, Cross River, Kano, and Kaduna.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) had embarked on the strike last week to protest the dismissal of some workers at the Dangote Refinery. Although the strike has since been suspended, the brief disruption in supply caused many gas depots to run dry, leading to rationing and steep price hikes.

In many parts of the country, the price of cooking gas has jumped from around ₦1,000 per kilogram to between ₦1,600 and ₦1,800.

In Abuja, refilling a 12.5kg cylinder now costs between ₦17,000 and ₦18,750, depending on the location. In districts such as Wuse, Garki, and Kubwa, a kilogram of LPG sells for ₦1,350 to ₦1,500, while some outlets in Jabi offer a 12.5kg refill for about ₦17,000.

Retailers in the city report that many outlets ran out of stock by Sunday, while those still selling gas increased their prices significantly.

A similar situation is unfolding in Lagos and Ogun States, where the price per kilogram rose from about ₦1,000 and ₦1,100 respectively last week to between ₦1,300 and ₦1,800 over the weekend.

Across Nigeria, households and small businesses continue to feel the impact of the gas shortage, as prices soar daily with no immediate relief in sight.

Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, has declared that the 2027 election will be a “walkover” for President Bola Tinubu.

Obasa made the comment at the weekend during the launch of ‘Tinubu 2027’ in Ojokoro LCDA, Lagos, where residents reaffirmed support for the president’s re-election bid.
