Wahala don really set for Ipele town in Ondo State as angry youths have petitioned Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, accusing their traditional ruler, the Olupele of Ipele, Oba Samuel Oluwashola Adesanmi Daramola, of harbouring hooded gunmen who allegedly fired shots inside his palace just hours before the Ipele Police Station was attacked and burnt.

In a strongly worded petition dated January 2026 and sent to the Governor’s Office, the concerned youths said they were alarmed by what they described as the monarch’s conduct, which they believe is threatening peace and security in the community.

The youths first praised the state government for its intervention after the New Year’s Eve attack on the Ipele Police Station on December 31, 2025. But they warned that deeper issues within the town, allegedly linked to the palace, could make things worse if urgent action is not taken.

According to the petition, the Olupele has barely stayed in Ipele since he was crowned over a year ago, frequently travelling to Lagos and the United Kingdom, where he lived before becoming king. The youths said this absence has weakened traditional leadership and damaged cooperation between the community and security agencies.

They further alleged that the monarch is constantly at war with local youths and even elites in the diaspora, creating tension and slowing down the town’s socio-economic development. “Kabiyesi is not at peace with the majority of youths,” the petitioners claimed, adding that he often quarrels with people he sees as enemies.

The youths also raised allegations of financial misconduct, accusing the monarch of removing or suspending chiefs without clear reasons and being overly interested in money matters. They cited a case where a ₦1 million donation meant for electricity restoration was allegedly diverted to a project that residents cannot verify.

Market disputes were also mentioned. The petition said the Olupele was recently attacked at Joks Market after allegedly trying to take over revenue collection, a role normally handled by the local government. His agents were also accused of collecting money from tipper drivers, nearly leading to violent clashes.

More disturbing allegations followed. The youths claimed that a young woman accused the monarch of impregnating her and pressuring her to abort the pregnancy, allegedly out of fear that his wife in the UK would react violently. They insisted that “cogent evidence is available.”

The youths alleged that the monarch parades armed men, fires gunshots inside his palace whenever he is in town, and has previously used gunmen to threaten residents. They said a matter involving these armed men is already under investigation at the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police in Akure.

They further claimed that during a palace party on the night of December 31, 2025, hooded gunmen were allegedly firing shots “at the pleasure of the kabiyesi.” Shockingly, about two hours later, armed men reportedly stormed and set the Ipele Police Station ablaze.

The New Year’s Eve attack, carried out by about 20 to 30 gunmen using rifles and explosives, left the police station badly damaged and threw the community into panic. Residents fled their homes, church services were disrupted, and fear spread across Ipele, although no casualties were recorded.

The youths described the monarch’s alleged actions as “unbecoming of a first-class Oba in Ondo State” and appealed to Governor Aiyedatiwa to urgently order a discreet but full-scale investigation into the matter. They also asked that the Olupele be cautioned to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

The petition was signed by Ibrahim Japheth and Olorunfunmi Oladotun on behalf of the Concerned Youths of Ipele, with copies sent to the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the police, DSS, and other security agencies.

The article, inspired by legendary reggae singer Peter Tosh’s song Steppin’ Razor, takes aim at judges who, instead of quietly doing their jobs, now mount the courtroom like a stage—boasting, threatening and performing toughness while serious allegations of bribery and influence quietly pass without action.

According to Odinkalu, some judges in Nigeria are beginning to see themselves as untouchable strongmen—“dangerous judges”—who talk tough but refuse to use the powers the law has already given them to deal with corruption.

The writer recalled how in August 2023, a senior judge, Justice Flora Azinge, publicly complained in court that lawyers had allegedly tried to bribe her with ₦10 million. Rather than naming the culprit, reporting the matter or punishing the offenders, she reportedly chose to issue public warnings and threats—without taking concrete action.

Fast forward to this past week, and history appears to be repeating itself.

At the Federal High Court in Abuja, Justice Polycarp Nwite, while ruling on the bail application of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, his wife and son over money laundering and corruption charges, reportedly declared himself “dangerous.” He warned lawyers not to approach him or attempt to influence his decisions, insisting that any such move would be “vehemently resisted.”

But Odinkalu no gree.

According to him, this kind of courtroom performance is nothing but noise if the judge refuses to take the legal steps available to him. Under Nigerian law and international judicial standards, judges are expected to be independent, impartial and firm. Any attempt to influence a judge is a crime—and there are clear options: report to the police, punish for contempt, refer lawyers for disciplinary action, or openly name and shame the offenders.

Instead, the author says, some judges prefer drama to discipline.

“This kind of talk without action,” Odinkalu argues, “does more harm than good. It makes the judiciary look weak, compromised and unserious.” In his words, a judge who complains about being approached but refuses to identify or sanction the culprits is not defending justice—he is advertising that he can be tested again.

In the Malami case, the judge neither named the lawyers allegedly trying to influence him nor recused himself from the matter. To Odinkalu, that is a serious failure of judicial responsibility.

In the petition addressed to the governor at the Ebonyi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, the communities warned that recent developments could “gravely prejudice” their proprietary rights and destabilize the lawful future of Nigercem Plc. They recalled that Ibeto Group lawfully acquired majority shares in Nigercem in 2010, but that the Ebonyi State Government under former Governor Martin Elechi allegedly revoked the company’s mining lease, a move they resisted through litigation.

According to the petition, prolonged court battles ended in 2013 with judgments in favour of Ibeto Group and the host communities. The communities said they supported the investor because earlier plans to site a new cement plant outside their area would have reduced them to mere limestone suppliers without benefiting from the economic and social gains of hosting a functioning cement factory.

While welcoming Governor Nwifuru’s campaign pledge to work with Ibeto Group to revive Nigercem, the communities expressed disappointment that a 15-member committee set up in August 2025 has yet to publicly present its findings. Their concerns deepened after the governor announced plans during the 2026 budget presentation to borrow ₦150 billion to build a new state-owned cement plant, despite the existence of Nigercem Plc.

The petition further alleged that some political office holders from the host clan were pressured on December 31, 2025, to sign a fresh consent letter purportedly revoking earlier agreements with Ibeto Group. The communities described this development as “deeply unsettling,” adding that the proposed site for the new plant lacks commercially viable limestone deposits and would still depend on resources from their land.

They also rejected what they called an “unauthorised and self-appointed committee” allegedly acting in their name, warning that they would resist any attempt to reduce Nigercem to a mere limestone excavation zone or to bypass existing legal rights through political manipulation.

In their appeal, the communities urged Governor Nwifuru to halt any action affecting ownership, mineral rights or control of Nigercem Plc and to convene an inclusive town hall meeting involving traditional rulers, professionals, youth and women groups, religious leaders and other stakeholders to transparently determine the company’s future.

As of the time of filing, the Ebonyi State Government had not issued an official response. However, the communities said they remain open to dialogue, expressing confidence in the governor’s sense of justice and statesmanship.

The unfolding dispute raises critical questions about resource control, investor confidence, community rights, and state-government intervention in Nigeria’s extractive sector. Observers warn that failure to address the grievances transparently could trigger renewed legal battles and social tensions in Ebonyi State.
