  • Nigeria NewsASUP Gives FG 21 Days To Meet Demands.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to meet outstanding demands contained in its 2010 agreement with the union.
ASUP Maintains Stand On December 2 Nationwide Strike
Naija News reports that ASUP President, Shammah Kpanja, disclosed this on Thursday during a briefing to newsmen after an emergency National Executive Council meeting in Abuja.

Kpanja explained that the union’s demands include the immediate release of a circular by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission to effect payment of the Peculiar Academic Allowance for polytechnic lecturers.

He said, “The Peculiar Academic Allowances paid to academic staff across polytechnics are a component of the ASUP/FGN 2010 agreement. Rather than make provisions for payment, these allowances have been removed from the budgeting template, and the Federal Ministry of Education has failed to intervene in definite terms.”

The union president noted that the 25/35 per cent salary review arrears, covering 12 months and already captured in the budget, were yet to be released “for reasons beyond the comprehension of the union.”

He also faulted the continued outsourcing of the polytechnic accreditation process by the National Board for Technical Education despite assurances to halt the practice.

Kpanja lamented that many state governments have yet to implement the new national minimum wage in polytechnics.

He further decried the continued delay in approving a dual mandate structure aimed at ending the “longstanding discrimination against HND holders.”

“In view of the items listed above, our union’s NEC has resolved to issue a 21-day ultimatum to the government to address the issues satisfactorily.

“A failure to utilise this window may lead to the declaration of a trade dispute and withdrawal of services of our members across public polytechnics and monotechnics nationwide,” he warned.

Naija News recalls that Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State had ordered the immediate shutdown of Badeggi FM Radio in Minna, the state capital.

This was communicated in statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, who disclosed that Bago gave the directive during the expanded Niger State All Progressives Congress (APC) Caucus meeting held at the Government House.

He stated that the Governor directed the State Commissioner of Police and Commissioner for Homeland Security, Brigadier General Bello Abdullahi Mohammed (RTD) to shut down the media outfit.

In a statement to Naija News, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said that this development reveals a disturbing pattern of executive overreach, disdain for constitutional rights, and a steady erosion of democratic norms under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He stated that Governor Umar Bago’s decision to shut down Badeggi FM “with immediate effect” is nothing short of a brazen assault on press freedom and a clear violation of the rule of law in a manner reminiscent of military dictatorship.

The full statement reads: “The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is greatly concerned about the growing dictatorial tendencies among the state governors of the ruling party, APC.

“We recall the recent public statement made by the APC Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, declaring the presidential candidate of the Labour Party and a leading member of the coalition movement persona non-grata in Edo State.

“Now this: Another APC Governor of Niger State, Muhammed Umaru Bago, has just announced a clamp down on a private radio station in the state, with “immediate effect” in a manner reminiscent of the worst form of military dictatorship.

The Federal Government, through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), has condemned the protest by Ghanaians calling on Nigerians to be deported from the West African country.

Naija News earlier reported that some Ghanaian citizens staged a protest against Nigerians, accusing them of engaging in mass prostitution, ritual killings, kidnapping, and violent crimes in their country.

In a viral video seen on Tuesday, the protesters, numbering in their hundreds, carried placards with inscriptions such as “Armed robbery and violent attacks must stop,” “Our health at stake due to mass prostitution,” “Nigerians are kidnapping and using people for rituals,” and “Our kids are getting missing because of Igbos.”

Reacting in a statement to Naija News, Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, NIDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, disclosed that Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO NIDCOM, said the blanket outrage against Nigerians living in Ghana and branding them as criminals should be condemned by all.

She said: “Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves while those bad ones should be fish out and face the necessary sanctions.

“Ghana and Nigeria are like siamese twins. They are brothers and such in the spirit of ECOWAS and regional integration should continue to live in peace like brothers.”

The NIDCOM Boss appealed for calm and urged Nigerians living in Ghana not to be provoked or go into violence with anyone as the issue is being handled at the diplomatic level.

She advised anyone using inciteful words to desist henceforth both from Nigerians and Ghanaians as that is capable of escalating the matter.

Dabiri-Erewa also advised Nigerians to disregard the videos circulating that Nigerians’ shops and properties are destroyed by Ghanaians.

“There is no evidence to that and we must at all cost prevent any reprisal attacks,” she said.

She praised Ghanaian and Nigeria High Commissioners for their efforts to control the situation, adding that the Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, has also been in touch with Ghanaian authorities and had taken some pro- active measures.

  • Nigeria NewsTension As Suspended Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan Insists On Resumption TodayPublished.

Suspended Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, is set to stage a controversial return to plenary today, despite strong warnings from the Senate leadership that her suspension remains in full effect.

Naija News reports that the lawmaker, who was suspended in March over alleged misconduct, told journalists at a constituency event that she had officially notified the Senate of her intention to resume duties, citing a recent court ruling as justification.

She said, “I have pretty much two months more before the six months expire. However, I have written to the Senate again telling them that I’m resuming on the 22nd, which is on Tuesday, by the special grace of God.”

Akpoti-Uduaghan maintained that the Federal High Court’s recent judgment supported her return to the Red Chamber, even as the Senate continues to argue otherwise.

“They argue that it’s an order, it’s not an order, but it is a decision,” she said, adding that the suspension hindered her from performing core legislative functions like sponsoring bills and moving motions.

Backing her stance, her counsel, West Idahosa (SAN), said the ruling made it clear that the Senate had overreached its constitutional powers by suspending her for 180 days.

Idahosa said, “When you say the plaintiff should go back, you mean she should go back to work. Now that she said she wants to go and resume, let us see what the reaction of the Senate will be.”

He noted that while his client had appealed certain aspects of the judgment, particularly the conviction for contempt, the decision permitting her return was a significant victory.

“She is still a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the judgment has come to an end,” he said.

Her aide, Isah Bala, when contacted by Punch on Monday, could not confirm her exact movement.

He said, “It is not something I can immediately confirm now because we just returned from a programme in Okene.”

However, the Senate has firmly rejected her claim of a judicial green light for resumption.

In a strongly worded statement on Sunday, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Yemi Adaramodu, reiterated that no binding court order compels the upper chamber to lift her suspension.

Adaramodu said, “The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria wishes to reaffirm, for the third time, that there is no subsisting court order mandating the Senate to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan before the expiration of her suspension.”

The Senate clarified that Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court only gave an advisory urging a review of the suspension and potential amendment of Senate Standing Orders—not a direct recall order.

He stated, “The court explicitly held that the Senate did not breach any law or constitutional provision in imposing the disciplinary measure.”

He further noted that Akpoti-Uduaghan was found guilty of contempt over a social media post and fined ₦5 million, along with a directive to issue a public apology in two national dailies and on her social platforms—actions the Senate claims are yet to be fulfilled.

In a stern warning, Adaramodu said any attempt by the senator to enter the chambers today “under a false pretext” would be considered disruptive and a breach of legislative decorum.

“Until then, she is respectfully advised to stay away from the Senate chambers and allow due process to run its full course,” the Senate spokesman said
