The bail hearing for the lawyer to detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, and his brother, Emmanuel “Fineboy” Kanu, was on Wednesday stalled at the Kuje Magistrate Court following the failure of the Nigeria Police Force to appear or file a counter affidavit. The matter, which came up before Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’I’d, was expected to determine the bail request filed on behalf of the two men and another person arrested during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held in Abuja earlier this week. However, proceedings could not go on as planned after the police failed to file their response to the bail motion or attend the session. It was gathered that Barrister Maxwell Opara, counsel to the defendants, approached the court registrar to inquire about the delay, only to be informed that the motion for bail was not listed for hearing. Magistrate Sai’I’d, who had previously assured that the application would be given prompt attention once the police were properly served, stated that his hands were tied due to the procedural lapses caused by the police’s absence and failure to respond. Omoyele Sowore & 4 others, restraining the protesters and other groups from staging any form of demonstrations for Kanu’s release in certain areas within the FCT. The ruling barred the respondents and any individuals or groups acting on their behalf from protesting within and around Aso Rock Villa, the National Assembly Complex, Force Headquarters, the Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way. In line with Justice Umar’s ruling on the protest, men of the Nigeria Police Force barricaded all roads leading to the areas mentioned by the ruling, thereby, frustrating Sowore and his fellow protesters from ensuring that their plans materialized. While barricading the roads, the police also shot teargas canisters to scare commuters and possible protesters from using the roads. Despite attempts by security operatives to stifle the protesters from carrying out their programme, Sowore and the demonstrators moved to other areas like Utako and Apo areas of Abuja where they protested. In the course of the protest, the police arrested and detained Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel; his Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, and other protesters at the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Command CID.

Police Deny Shooting Sowore, Others During Protest In Abuja. The Nigeria Police Force has denied claims that its operatives fired live bullets at protesters in Abuja during the #FreeNnamdiKanu demonstration led by activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore on Monday. The Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said it was only teargas that was fired. He added that people who are not familiar with the sound can mistake the firing of teargas for live ammunition as both make the same popping, explosion-like sound. Hundeyin, who spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday night, added that the Police only fired tear gas after the protesters refused to leave the areas where the court had already prohibited their demonstrations. “I can say it authoritatively that no live ammunition was fired today. Not a single live ammunition. “It is easy for people who are not familiar with the sound to mistake the firing of teargas for live ammunition. It makes the same popping, explosion-like sound. I can say it on good authority that no live ammunition was shot. “We made it clear that we were going to enforce this court order. We gave enough warning to these people to step back and not go beyond where they were, but they were adamant and they were approaching these areas,” he said. The Force PRO added that the officers acted within the provisions of the law and established procedures to ensure public safety.

Prof. Paul Ananaba, Chairman of the NBA-SPIDEL, made this known in Ikeja on Thursday during an interactive session organized as part of the build-up to the NBA-SPIDEL Annual Conference in Akwa Ibom. Ananaba, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, stated that the review aims to ensure the policy aligns with public interest and national security goals. The senior lawyer explained that the decision came after several weeks of discussions between both parties, following public complaints about the harassment of motorists with partially tinted vehicle windows. He noted that the association stepped in following numerous reports of arbitrary arrests and vehicle impoundments by police officers enforcing the tinted permit policy. “Following our discussions with senior police officers, we agreed that enforcement of the tinted permit should be suspended, while a joint review committee is constituted. “SPIDEL’s engagement with the police is not confrontational but aimed at promoting accountability and justice in public administration. “The committee, comprising representatives of NBA-SPIDEL and the Nigeria Police, will examine the legal and security implications of the policy and recommend new modalities for its regulation,” Ananaba said.

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, while addressing journalists at the FCT Police Command Headquarters in Garki on Saturday, said the arrests followed a “coordinated, intelligence-driven investigation” launched immediately after the tragic incident. The suspects were identified as Shamsudeen Hassan, Hassan Isah (22), Abubakar Alkamu a.k.a. Abba (27), Sani Sirajo a.k.a. Dan Borume (20), Mashkur Jamilu a.k.a. Abba (28), Suleiman Badamasi a.k.a. Dan-Sule (21), Abdulsalam Saleh a.k.a. Na-Durudu, Zaharadeen Muhammad a.k.a. Gwaska (23), Musa Adamu a.k.a. Musa Hassan (30), Sumayya Mohammed a.k.a. Baby (27), Isah Abdulrahman a.k.a. Abbati (25), and Musa Umar a.k.a. Small (31). Items recovered from the suspects include a locally fabricated AK-47 rifle, a locally made pistol, a pump-action gun, 36 live rounds of 9mm ammunition, two live cartridges, four mobile phones, two sharp knives, a cutlass, and two flashlights. According to the police, the security guard, Mr. Danlami, was shot dead by one of the suspects, Shamsudeen Hassan, after he attempted to stop the gang from entering the apartment complex. Investigations also revealed that the suspects sourced their weapons from a supplier in Niger Republic and were responsible for several armed robbery attacks across Katampe I, Apo, Zuba, and other areas in the FCT. Tinubu Approves 959 National Honours. President Bola Tinubu on Thursday approved the conferment of 959 national honours and endorsed far-reaching reforms to strengthen the funding framework of the Nigeria Police Force. Understands that the President made the approvals while presiding over marathon meetings of the National Council of State and the Nigeria Police Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Briefing State House correspondents after the sessions, the Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Affairs Office, Emanso Umobong, said Tinubu endorsed the report of the National Honours Award Committee covering 2024 and 2025, alongside special awards already bestowed since January 2025. “The award of titles of honour and decorations of dignitaries is a yearly event at which the President honours deserving nationals and non-nationals who have distinguished themselves in the service of the nation and humanity,” Umobong said. She explained that the committee, chaired by Justice Sidi Bage, screened over 5,000 applications before recommending 824 recipients for national honours and 135 special awardees, bringing the total to 959 honourees. Police Arrest 20 Osun Amotekun Operatives Over Akinlalu killings. About 20 operatives of the Osun State Amotekun Corps were reportedly arrested on Wednesday by a special squad of the Nigeria Police Force from Abuja over killings in Akinlalu, Ife North Local Government Area, last week. The police team carried out the operation at the Corps’ Oke Fia Operation Base in Osogbo and its Ife Central Division in Ile-Ife, sealing off both premises after the arrests.  However, the Corps’ state headquarters in Powerline, Osogbo, remained open as of Wednesday evening. Confirming the development, Osun Amotekun spokesperson, Yusuf Idowu, said the police “burst our operation base in Oke Fia and the Ife Central Command,” arresting about 20 operatives in connection with the Akinlalu incident. He added that the whereabouts of those arrested remain unknown.

Of tinted glass, Nigeria police and the law. The Nigeria Police Force is in the news again, for the enforcement of the ban against tinted or shaded glasses in motor cars. On April 25, 2025, the police announced its intention to compel the procurement of a written permit on all cars with tinted glasses. Although no cogent reason has been proffered for the implementation of this policy inherited as part of the military invasion of our political space, it would seem from all indications that the goal is that of revenue generation. The challenge with this is that Nigerians have been taxed and overtaxed and if the rationale behind the current tax reform laws is to harmonise all taxes, then there has to be a rethink of this policy by the police. THE LAW AGAINST TINTED OR SHADED MOTOR GLASSES On 8th February 1991, the federal military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida (Retd) enacted the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Decree 1991, in the following terms: “The Federal Military Government hereby decrees as follows: 1. (1) Except with the permission of the appropriate authority designated for the purposes of this Decree and for such good cause as may be determined from time to time by the appropriate authority, no person shall cause any glass fitted on a motor vehicle to be- (a) tinted; or (b) shaded; or (c) coloured lightly or thickly (d) darkened; or (e) treated in any other way, so that the persons or objects in the motor vehicle are rendered obscure or invisible. (2) In this section, “good cause” means health or security reasons. 2. (l) Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained in any law, rule of law, enactment or the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1979, as amended, any person who without the permission of the appropriate authority-

The legal body, in the letter it served the IGP on Thursday, drew his attention to the fact that issues surrounding the legality of the tinted glass policy, is already pending before the Federal High Court in Abuja, warning that “the Nigeria Police, as a law enforcement agency, should know better not to be lawless.” This came on a day that police officers who were on the street to enforce the orders of the Assistant Inspector-General, AIG, Zone 5, on tinted glass permit, allegedly impounded a vehicle belonging to a judge of the National Industrial Court, NIC, in Delta State. He said: “We shall invoke the powers of the Court to ensure that the Nigeria Police Force does not trample on the rights of Nigerians. Any citizen that is harrassed by the Police in the purported enforcement of the illegal tinted glass permit by the Police should be free to contact any of the NBA branches. “The Human Rights Committees of the 130 branches of the NBA in Nigeria are ready to offer pro bono services to anyone that is harrassed. “It has been estimated that the Police may generate at least N3billion within a month from monies that will be collected, thus, turning the Police into a revenue- generating agency of the Federal government instead of focusing on the more serious issues crime. “The matter is in Court and the Nigeria Police as a law enforce should know better not to be lawless. A police signal obtained by reporters read in part: “The vehicle attached to the Department of Operations, FHQ Abuja, was declared missing/stolen or removed from where parked on 28/07/2025 from the parking lot of FHQ, Louis Edet House, Abuja. Case is under investigation. Grateful disseminate to formations, area commands, and divisions for possible recovery.” In response, the Force has directed all area commands, divisional police officers, and tactical units nationwide to remain on high alert and treat the case as “very important.” Security agencies have also been instructed to provide immediate updates on any leads that could aid the recovery of the vehicle.

IGP Kayode Egbetokun Warns Police Officers Against Meddling in Land Disputes. Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has cautioned officers of the Nigeria Police Force against interfering in civil matters, particularly land disputes, warning that the Force will not serve as enforcers for private interests. In a video posted on the NPF’s official X handle on Thursday, Egbetokun made it clear that police officers must not act outside their mandate by escorting parties for land recovery, disrupting lawful occupations, or meddling in civil claims without clear criminal elements. “The Nigeria Police Force is not, and will never be, an enforcer for private interests,” he stated. “Every such action compromises our neutrality and drags the Force into disrepute.” The IGP further warned that any officer found violating this directive will face strict disciplinary measures, stressing that the boundary must remain clear.
