• Lagos govt probes LASAA staff for allegedly diverting public funds.

The Lagos State Government has commenced a formal investigation into allegations of financial misconduct involving a staff member of the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency, LASAA, accused of diverting official payments into a personal bank account.

The probe followed a public outcry on X, where a user alleged that payments meant for LASAA were being made into an individual’s Opay account.

The whistleblower, identified as @Bhadmoz (TrueBlue), claimed that customers were being charged N45,000, but issued receipts reflecting only N7,100.

The user tagged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, calling for immediate action.

In a swift response, Commissioner Wahab confirmed that the individual linked to the allegations is an employee of LASAA.

He directed that the staff member report to the agency’s headquarters for immediate disciplinary action.

“My attention has been drawn to a post alleging improper transaction practices involving a staff member of an agency under our ministry. I have instructed that the officer appear at the agency’s head office tomorrow to face disciplinary proceedings,” Wahab said.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to accountability, integrity, and transparency in public service, warning that unethical behaviour would not be tolerated.

  • FG Reaffirms Maths, English as Mandatory O’Level Subjects Despite Admission Policy Review.

The Federal Government has clarified that English Language and Mathematics remain compulsory for all students registering for their O’Level examinations, despite the recent adjustments to university and polytechnic admission requirements.

In a statement on Sunday, the Federal Ministry of Education explained that the revised admission policy does not exempt any student from taking or registering for the two core subjects.

According to the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the clarification became necessary following widespread misinterpretations of the newly introduced O’Level admission framework.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, said the reform was designed to promote flexibility, fairness, and inclusiveness in tertiary education admissions, ensuring that qualified candidates are not disqualified over deficiencies in subjects irrelevant to their chosen courses.

“The streamlining ensures that deserving students are not denied access to higher education due to credit deficiencies in subjects not directly related to their fields of study,” Alausa stated.

He emphasized that the reform aligns with global best practices, correcting previous imbalances by allowing institutions to consider candidates for certain programmes where a credit pass in Mathematics or English is not compulsory. However, all students must still register and sit for both subjects in their O’Level exams.

The ministry noted that the policy only affects admission criteria for specific programmes, not the requirement to study or take the subjects.

“All students must continue to take both subjects as part of their Senior School Certificate Examinations, as they remain vital components of a sound educational foundation,” the statement read.

Earlier reports indicated that under the new policy, students in arts and humanities may be admitted into tertiary institutions without a credit in Mathematics, provided it is not a core requirement for their chosen field.

  • FG speaks on report that UTME no more required for varsity admission.

This clarification is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by Mrs Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education.

Boriowo quoted the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, as saying the report was false, baseless, and did not originate from the Ministry.

Alausa said: “At no point did the Ministry issue or authorise any statement suggesting that JAMB is no longer mandatory for admission into tertiary institutions.

“For the avoidance of doubt, JAMB remains the statutory and legally empowered body responsible for entrance examinations and coordinating admissions into all tertiary institutions in Nigeria.”

He reaffirmed that the established admission processes through JAMB remain fully operational and urged the public to disregard any contrary information.

Alausa said the Ministry had completely dissociated itself from the false publication circulated across various media platforms.

He urged prospective students, parents, and institutions to rely only on official communication channels of the Ministry and JAMB for verified information.

The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s collaboration with JAMB and other agencies to uphold transparency, fairness, and credibility in tertiary education admissions.

  • FG Overhauls Tertiary Admission Policy, Drops Maths Requirement for Arts Students.

The Federal Government has announced a major overhaul of admission requirements into tertiary institutions across Nigeria, aimed at expanding access to higher education and ensuring inclusivity.

The development was disclosed on Tuesday in a statement signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education.

According to the statement, the reform driven by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa is part of efforts to advance the Renewed Hope Agenda and promote inclusive education as a catalyst for national development.

Under the new policy, entry barriers into universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and Innovation Enterprise Academies (IEAs) will be eased, with mathematics no longer compulsory for students applying to certain arts and humanities programmes.

Dr. Alausa explained that the reform became necessary following years of limited access to tertiary education, which left many qualified candidates without admission.

He noted that out of over two million candidates who sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) yearly, only about 700,000 gain admission, a gap largely caused by rigid and outdated entry requirements.

The Minister added that the new framework would enable institutions to admit an additional 250,000 to 300,000 students annually, expanding opportunities for capable young Nigerians.

  • Lagos govt unveils emergency ambulance bikes to beat traffic, save lives.

The Lagos State Government, on Tuesday, unveiled 10 newly acquired Motorcycle Response Unit, MRU, Ambulances, popularly referred to as “Ambulance Bikes”

The bikes were handed over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS, in a move aimed at cutting down emergency response times and strengthening pre-hospital care delivery across the state.

The motorcycles, specially fitted with medical equipment, are designed to navigate Lagos’ heavy traffic, narrow inner roads, and other hard-to-reach areas, allowing paramedics to reach victims faster in situations where every second is critical.

Speaking at the official handover ceremony, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, described the initiative as a bold step in tackling the peculiar challenges of emergency care in a mega city like Lagos.

“These Ambu-bikes are Lagos’ response to our unique traffic situation. They will reach patients faster than conventional ambulances, deliver immediate treatment, and, where necessary, call in larger ambulance units for evacuation.

“This saves precious time and ultimately saves more lives,” Ogunyemi said.

She explained that each of the 220cc superbikes is equipped with vital life-saving tools, including sphygmomanometers, stethoscopes, pulse oximeters, nebulizer machines, glucometers, automated external defibrillators, AEDs, oxygen kits, radios, sirens, and specialized protective gear for the riders.

According to her, trained paramedics will man the units, delivering first aid and basic life support in cases such as collapses, bleeding, or respiratory distress, pending the arrival of full-scale ambulances.

  • Pandemonium As Fuel Tanker Explosion Rocks Oshodi, Lagos.

The tanker, which reportedly overturned while in motion, immediately exploded, with the raging fire consuming at least four other trucks parked nearby.
    Fuel Tanker Explosion
A petrol tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) burst into flames on Sunday at Iyana-Isolo, heading toward Oshodi, Lagos, causing panic and raising fears of the fire spreading across the busy corridor.

The tanker, which reportedly overturned while in motion, immediately exploded, with the raging fire consuming at least four other trucks parked nearby.

Eyewitnesses said the inferno could have caused a major disaster had it not been quickly contained.

Swift intervention by operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, in collaboration with other emergency agencies, averted what could have become a large-scale tragedy.

The agency mobilised first responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, police officers from Aswani, Ilasa and Mushin divisions, as well as the Neighbourhood Safety Corps, to the scene.

According to LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the fire was successfully brought under control after personnel cordoned off the affected road and diverted traffic away from the danger zone. He confirmed that reinforcements from adjoining zones were also deployed to boost the operation.

Bakare-Oki expressed relief that no lives were lost, attributing the outcome to the prompt coordination of agencies on the ground. He, however, cautioned drivers of articulated vehicles, tankers and heavy-duty trucks against reckless speeding, which preliminary findings linked to the cause of the accident.

He also advised residents to utilise LASTMA’s toll-free hotline (080000527862) to report traffic emergencies, assuring the public that the agency remains equipped to respond swiftly to incidents.

  • Court Stops Reps From Summoning 17 Insurance CEOs Over Alleged Debt

The Federal High Court in Abuja has barred the House of Representatives from compelling 17 insurance company CEOs to appear before its Committee on Capital Market and Institutions over alleged debt.

Justice Emeka Nwite granted the order following a suit filed by the insurers under the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA). The firms argued that they are already regulated by statutory agencies such as NAICOM, CAC, and FIRS, insisting the National Assembly lacks constitutional powers to demand operational records or probe alleged indebtedness.

The dispute stems from a House investigation into 25 insurers accused of failing to remit ₦98.4 billion to the Federal Government.

The plaintiffs include AXA Mansard, NEM Insurance, Cornerstone Insurance, LASACO, Mutual Benefits, and others. The defendants are the Speaker of the House, the Committee on Capital Market and Institutions, and its leaders.

The substantive case has been adjourned to September 9, 2025.

  • FCT Teachers’ Strike: FG seeks dialogue as action enters 100th day.

As the indefinite strike by primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) enters its 100th day, the Federal Government has appealed for dialogue, unity and swift resolution of the crisis.

In a statement issued by the Director, Press and Public Relations of the Ministry, Boriowo Folasade, on Monday, the ministry said it deeply values the unwavering commitment of Nigerian teachers, who remain the backbone of the nation’s foundational education system.

The Guardian reports that the long-running industrial action, which commenced on March 24, 2025, has paralysed learning across over 400 public primary schools in the six Area councils of the FCT, leaving thousands of pupils stuck at home or left unattended in dilapidated classrooms.

The ongoing strike was sparked by the failure of the six area councils to implement the N70,000 minimum wage agreement signed in a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding on December 11, 2024.

According to Boriowo, the Federal Ministry of Education has reviewed with concern the communiqué issued by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing, following its Emergency State Wing Standing Committee (SWSC) meeting held on March 22, 2025, in Gwagwalada, Abuja.
