Kenyan Police Arrest Three Nigerians Over Suspected Cyber Fraud.

Kenyan authorities have arrested three Nigerian nationals for alleged cyber fraud and immigration offences after residents reported suspicious activity in a rented apartment in Mwea, Kirinyaga County.

The suspects — Peter Chukwujekwu, Alazor Chukulute Sunday, and Nnalue Chiagozie Samwel — were arrested on 12 November 2025 in a joint operation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and immigration officers in Mwaliko Estate, Ngurubani.

According to Streamline, the DCI said, “A well-coordinated multi-agency raid in Mwaliko Estate has blown the lid off a suspected cyber fraud ring operated by three Nigerian nationals.” 

The raid followed reports from residents about unusual movements and late-night activity in the apartment. Investigators recovered 21 phones, 79 SIM cards, a Dell laptop, and several credit cards believed to be linked to online fraud.

Authorities say the items suggest a network possibly involved in identity theft and financial scams.

Checks also showed the three were in Kenya illegally, with expired entry passes and no work permits. They claimed to be “running an online business,” but detectives are probing possible ties to wider cybercrime groups. “The three are currently cooling their heels in custody as investigators dig deeper into their network,” Streamline added.

The suspects remain in custody as forensic teams analyse the seized devices and trace possible links to other operations locally and abroad.

Their arrest comes amid a surge in cyber threats in Kenya. The Communications Authority recorded 2.54 billion incidents between January and March 2025, a major rise from late 2024. Many Kenyans have also fallen victim to phishing emails and fake text messages.

Kenya has strengthened penalties under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act of 2018 and its 2025 amendment, which impose fines of up to KSh 20 million and jail terms of up to 10 years for major cyber offences.

Senate moves to phase out petrol cars, advances electric vehicle bill.

The Nigerian Senate has moved closer to adopting clean energy transportation after a bill seeking to phase out petrol-powered cars and promote electric vehicles (EVs) scaled second reading on Tuesday.

The proposed legislation, sponsored by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, aims to provide the legal and policy framework for Nigeria’s transition from fossil fuel dependence to electric mobility. Kalu explained that the bill would help reduce carbon emissions, encourage local vehicle production, and align the country with global efforts toward sustainable transport.

According to him, the transport sector contributes between 20 and 30 percent of Nigeria’s greenhouse gas emissions. “This bill seeks to establish a comprehensive legal and institutional framework to guide Nigeria’s gradual move from petrol-powered vehicles to cleaner, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly alternatives,” he said.

The bill also proposes creating a National Electric Vehicle Development and Promotion Council to coordinate policy implementation at all levels of government.

In support of the proposal, Senator Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central) described it as timely, noting that countries like Kenya and South Africa are already progressing in electric mobility. He said adopting EVs would reduce emissions in cities such as Lagos and Kano, improve public health, and create new jobs.

Senator Osita Ngwu (Enugu West) added that Nigeria’s population gives it a critical role in global climate action, while Senator Titus Zam (Benue North-West) highlighted the environmental and health gains of the transition.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the initiative, calling it a “very good innovation,” and expressed confidence in its potential impact. The bill has been forwarded to the Senate Committee on Industries for further consideration, with a report expected in four weeks.

The Global Defence Consortium representing IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu has accused the Federal High Court in Abuja and Justice James Omotosho of bias and denial of fair hearing following alleged irregularities during Friday’s court session.

According to a statement by Barrister Onyedikachi Ifedi, Kanu informed the court that his legal team was dismissed only a day earlier and that he could not access his legal files due to DSS restrictions. His request for more time to review the files, the defence argued, was a constitutional right under Section 36(6)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, not a delay tactic.

Kanu also sought to extend his legal and medical consultations from three to five days per week—a request the court granted, though the judge claimed Kanu had wasted earlier opportunities. The defence disputed this, saying it was unfair to force a defendant in a capital case to proceed after only “three hours” of consultation.

The statement further alleged that the DSS continues to bug Kanu’s conversations with his lawyers, violating constitutional provisions and international legal standards. It added that Justice Omotosho’s actions—such as vacating the courtroom during consultations and adjourning when Kanu requested court records—proved a breach of fair hearing and contempt for open justice.

The defence also noted that its applications to bring witnesses from the U.S., Kenya, the U.K., and Ethiopia remain unaddressed, describing it as a deliberate attempt to frustrate the defence.

UK Issues Fresh Travel Alert Over Fake Alcohol Risk in Nigeria, Seven Other Nations.

The United Kingdom has issued a fresh travel advisory cautioning its citizens against the risk of methanol poisoning from counterfeit or contaminated alcoholic beverages in Nigeria and seven other countries.

According to a report by the BBC on Tuesday, the UK Foreign Office updated its travel guidance to include Nigeria, Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, Russia, and Uganda as countries with a high risk of methanol-related poisoning incidents involving British nationals.

Previously, the list featured Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Turkey, Costa Rica, and Fiji.

The Foreign Office explained that methanol, a toxic industrial alcohol made from wood distillation, is sometimes illegally mixed with genuine spirit-based drinks and cocktails. Even in small quantities, it can be fatal.

“Methanol is toxic even in small amounts. It can be found in products like antifreeze, fuel, and paint thinners,” the advisory stated.

To stay safe, the UK warned its citizens to avoid consuming unlabelled, homemade, or streetside alcoholic drinks while travelling.
“Avoid homemade or streetside alcohol. Don’t drink from unlabelled bottles. Local spirits or homemade alcohol are at high risk,” the Foreign Office advised.

Travellers were also urged to stick to licensed liquor outlets, bars, and hotels, and to only consume sealed drinks with intact packaging. “Be cautious about spirits, cocktails, shots, and unusually cheap or free drinks,” the warning added, noting that pre-mixed cocktails served in buckets or jugs in tourist areas could be especially dangerous.

Damilare Adenola, the group’s Director of Mobilisation, maintained that the march is a constitutional right and a stand against the government’s “illegal and inhumane” actions.

In a statement released on Friday, the Embassy warned that the demonstration could cause disruptions, roadblocks, and possible violence. It urged Americans in Abuja to avoid protest zones and limit movement across the city.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens that the ‘Free Nnamdi Kanu Now’ protest is expected to take place on Monday, October 20th, 2025. There may be traffic congestion, road closures, and potential confrontations between protesters and police near Eagle Square and the Central Business District,” the statement read.

The embassy also advised residents to take extra precautions, recommending that children stay home from school and domestic workers who travel from outside Abuja not report to work that day.

The alert follows the announcement by activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, who disclosed on October 9 via X (formerly Twitter) that the peaceful protest would be held at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.

He commended Sowore’s nonviolent approach, urging the federal government to seek political and reconciliatory solutions to the grievances in the South East.

Kenyan Opposition Leader Raila Odinga Dies at 80 During a morning walk in India.

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga has died in India at the age of 80, Indian police confirmed on Wednesday.

According to Krishnan M., Additional Superintendent of Police in Kerala State, Odinga collapsed during a morning walk with his sister, daughter, & personal doctor. He was accompanied by both Indian & Kenyan security officers when the incident occurred. Despite being rushed to a nearby private hospital, doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

A spokesperson for the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre in Kerala, where Odinga had been receiving treatment, also confirmed the death. “Around 7:45 a.m., Mr. Raila was on his morning walk when he suddenly experienced breathing difficulties & collapsed,” the spokesman told AFP. “CPR was immediately administered, & after brief signs of recovery, he was rushed to a modern hospital. Unfortunately, despite several resuscitation efforts, he could not be saved.”

A member of Odinga’s political team, who requested anonymity pending an official announcement, also confirmed the tragic news.

Born on January 7, 1945, Odinga was one of Kenya’s most influential political figures. A member of the Luo ethnic group, he spent years in jail and exile under the autocratic rule of President Daniel arap Moi, championing democracy and political reform.

He entered parliament in 1992 and ran unsuccessfully for president five times in 1997, 2007, 2013, 2017, and 2022 each time claiming he was denied victory through electoral fraud.

Member of the House of Representatives, Obi Aguocha, has criticised the federal government for what he described as selective justice in the handling of the case of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

The Lawmaker accused the Nigerian government of applying different standards of justice to the Igbo ethnic group compared to other regions of the country.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television News, Aguocha said President Bola Tinubu recently granted clemency to individuals convicted of serious crimes such as drug trafficking and murder, while Kanu, who according to him has committed no offence, continues to languish in detention.

He said: “I firmly believe that we must all raise our voices, even if it means doing so through peaceful protests. In the administration of criminal justice in Nigeria, an Igbo man faces a host of challenges that other tribes do not experience. In a recent series of pardons, President Tinubu granted clemency to ‘drug lords’ and ‘murderers,’ yet Nnamdi Kanu, who has committed no offence, has endured extensive dehumanisation for ten years.”

Aguocha, who represents the Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, has been consistent in his calls for the immediate release of Kanu.

He said the continued detention of the IPOB leader, despite several court rulings in his favour, undermines justice and threatens peace in the Southeast region.

Recall that Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, since his re-arrest and extradition from Kenya in 2021.

He faces charges bordering on treasonable felony and terrorism.

In a post shared via X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Olayinka accused Atiku of double standards, describing him as a hypocrite who failed to publicly condemn the brutal murder of Deborah Samuel, a Sokoto student lynched in 2022 over alleged blasphemy.

Shoprite’s operations in Nigeria appear to be in dire straits, four years after the South African retail giant exited the country’s supermarket business.

Daily Trust reports that outlets in Ibadan and Ilorin have already shut down, while stores still operating in Lagos, Abuja, and other cities now have visibly empty shelves.

Senator John Azuta-Mbata, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has appealed to the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to allow him access to proper medical care.

In a video message shared on Thursday, Azuta-Mbata also urged Igbos across Nigeria to actively participate in the ongoing voter registration exercise and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Azuta-Mbata emphasized that Kanu’s prolonged detention has been a major source of political and security tension in Nigeria. Kanu was initially arrested in 2015 on charges of treasonable felony, jumped bail in 2017, and fled the country. He was rearrested in Kenya in June 2021 during a controversial operation by Nigerian security operatives and has since been held by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Calling for a political resolution, Azuta-Mbata stated that the Federal Government gains no advantage from continuing Kanu’s detention. He stressed the importance of safeguarding Kanu’s welfare and providing him with medical attention.

“I’m calling upon Ndigbo—wherever you are in Nigeria—to take advantage of the voter registration exercise going on now. Go and get your PVCs as quickly as possible.

“Secondly, I urge the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu. There is no real advantage in keeping him detained. The government must ensure his safety and allow him to receive medical treatment promptly. A political solution should be pursued, as continued detention serves no meaningful purpose.”
