• US special forces have arrived in the United Kingdom as Washington moves to intercept a sanctioned oil tanker accused of evading the Trump administration’s blockade on Venezuelan crude and racing toward Russia.

Cargo aircraft carrying helicopters and personnel landed at RAF Fairford, as US and allied forces stage for a possible high-risk boarding operation against the tanker Marinera, formerly known as Bella 1.

The vessel, described by US officials as part of a “shadow fleet” used to bypass international sanctions, is believed to be operating under a Russian flag in the North Atlantic, roughly 500 miles west of Ireland, en route to Russia.

Troops from America’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, known as the Night Stalkers, have reportedly deployed Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters capable of fast-roping commandos onto large vessels. Three V-22 Ospreys operating out of RAF Mildenhall have also joined the mission, alongside surveillance aircraft and refuelling jets.

US and UK military activity intensified after the tanker was tracked resurfacing at sea, having previously slipped away from US forces in the Caribbean following Donald Trump’s announcement of a “total and complete blockade” on Venezuelan oil exports.

The tanker is alleged to be linked to Iran and accused of helping sanctioned regimes, including those of Vladimir Putin and Nicolás Maduro, continue oil trading despite restrictions. During the pursuit, the crew reportedly painted a Russian flag on the hull and later re-registered the ship under a new name in Russia.

Defence sources said the build-up at RAF Fairford indicates preparations for a hostile boarding, while naval patrol aircraft continue to monitor the tanker’s movements.

US officials told American media that the preference is to seize the tanker rather than sink it, mirroring a helicopter-borne raid carried out last month on another sanctioned vessel. A decision on whether to proceed with the operation is expected within days.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested Nwobodo Chidiebere Basil, a notorious ex-convict, and three cargo agents—Jubrin Firdausi Hassana, Kuku Daniel Oluwasegun, and Igwe Chioma Jane—at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, for attempting to smuggle 75 parcels of cocaine (1.5 kg) to London. Basil, 37, had previously been convicted in May 2023 for trafficking 30.10 kg of methamphetamine and sentenced to five years imprisonment, which he commuted by paying a ₦7 million fine. Following a sting operation, he was apprehended at a relaxation centre in Ikeja. NDLEA highlighted that Basil’s return to drug trafficking underscores weaknesses in Nigeria’s sentencing and justice system. The suspects are in custody, and investigations are ongoing.

  • BREAKING: U.S. COAST GUARD INTERDICTS SANCTIONED VESSEL OFF VENEZUELA'S COAST

U.S. officials just confirmed the Coast Guard is actively interdicting a sanctioned vessel in international waters off Venezuela's coast.

3 sources speaking anonymously told Reuters the op is underway, with the Coast Guard leading the charge.

No details yet on the ship's name, cargo, or exact location, but this comes during Trump's renewed pressure on Maduro's regime - think oil sanctions, military posturing in the Caribbean, and efforts to choke off revenue streams.

The move fits the broader push to squeeze Venezuela's economy and force regime change or concessions.

U.S. Coast Guard cutters have been patrolling these waters more aggressively lately, boarding ships suspected of smuggling oil or violating sanctions.

Watch for more updates - this could escalate tensions fast, especially with Maduro already backed into a corner.

  • In December 2014 a Russian cargo plane carrying French helicopters out of the Central African Republic made an emergency landing in Kano. The Antonov cargo plane had been traveling from Bangui to the Chadian capital N'djamena when it developed technical difficulties and made an emergency landing at Kano airport, because Kano was the closest airport facility.

Nigerian authorities detained it on arrival and questioned its French crew. The Nigerian federal and airport authorities, satisfied with the documents and the genuine character of the flight authorized the plane to continue its flight to N'Djamena.

There was no diplomatic grandstanding, accusations of invasion or unnecessary drama, just the kind of measured response you’d expect from a responsible nation.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has initiated diplomatic efforts to secure the release of the plane and the 11 detained personnel in B-FASO. Lets hope for a swift and positive resolution. Prolonging this situation serves neither country’s interests.

  • Burkina Faso Detains 11 Nigerian Officers, Impounds Air Force Aircraft Over Unauthorized Entry

Burkina Faso’s military government has confirmed the detention of 11 Nigerian military personnel and the seizure of a Nigerian Air Force cargo aircraft after it entered the country’s airspace without approval and made an emergency landing.

In a statement issued late Monday, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) said the C-130 aircraft belonging to the Nigerian Air Force was forced to land on December 8, 2025, in Bobo Dioulasso due to an in-flight emergency while flying over Burkinabe territory without clearance. The AES comprises Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali, all currently under military rule. Authorities disclosed that the aircraft was carrying two crew members and nine passengers, all of whom were later identified as Nigerian military officers.

The 11 individuals are presently being held by Burkinabe authorities. The regional bloc strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a violation of its airspace and national sovereignty. An investigation has been launched to determine the full circumstances surrounding the unauthorized entry. In response, the AES announced that the armed forces of its three member states have been placed on maximum alert.

The bloc further stated that air defense and anti-aircraft systems across the confederation have been authorized to neutralize any aircraft that violates its airspace. The alliance described the incident as an unfriendly act carried out in breach of international aviation laws and warned that strict measures are now in place to safeguard its territorial integrity and civilian population.

  • Dangote Surge Forces Petrol Prices Down as Depots, NNPC Slash Rates Nationwide

Nigerians are beginning to feel relief as private depots and NNPC retail stations slash petrol prices following a major increase in supply triggered by the Dangote Refinery. After Dangote announced it is now producing 50 million litres of petrol daily, depot owners across Lagos, Port Harcourt, Warri and Calabar reduced ex-depot prices to stay competitive, with rates now ranging between ₦835 and ₦853 per litre depending on location.
NNPC stations also cut pump prices to ₦905 in Lagos and ₦930 in Abuja, with major marketers like MRS and Ardova selling below ₦900. With strong supply from Dangote and incoming oil cargoes, more price reductions may follow. Diesel prices are also falling, driven by increased supply and lower demand.

  • FG Approves just $1bn for Modernisation of Apapa, TinCan Ports in Lagos.

The Federal Government has approved $1 billion (₦1.4 trillion) for the modernisation of Apapa and TinCan Island seaports in Lagos — Nigeria’s busiest commercial gateways.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, announced this on Wednesday at the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Nigeria Conference in Lagos.

He said the project aims to enhance cargo handling, expand capacity, and align operations with global standards under the ministry’s 10-year marine and blue economy strategy.

“We are working closely with stakeholders to achieve a paperless, technology-driven port environment that enhances efficiency, reduces turnaround time, and curbs corruption,” Oyetola stated.

He added that similar port upgrades are being planned outside Lagos to ensure balanced development nationwide.

Though the government has not released full details or a timeline, reports earlier this year indicated that ITB Nigeria — owned by Lebanese-Nigerian businessman Gilbert Chagoury — had been awarded a $700 million contract for the Lagos port renovation, expected to begin in mid-2025.

The project is to be financed through a Citibank loan backed by UK Export Finance, with additional support from Afreximbank.

APM Terminals, operators of the Apapa port and a subsidiary of Maersk, has also proposed a $500 million investment.

Oyetola noted that the ministry is fostering private sector participation through regulatory reforms, public-private partnerships, and incentives to drive innovation and job creation.

Lagos ports, despite high fees and ageing infrastructure, remain vital trade hubs for West Africa and continue to attract major global shipping companies.

Saudi Arabia has slashed Nigeria’s Hajj allocation from 95,000 to 66,910 slots, effective from 2026.

According to the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), the reduction followed Nigeria’s failure to fully utilize its previous allocations during the 2024 and 2025 pilgrimages.

A statement signed by NAHCON’s Deputy Director of Information and Publication, Fatima Sanda Usara, explained that the new figure reflects the actual capacity reserved for Nigeria on the NUSUK Masar portal. “Although Nigeria was initially allocated 95,000 slots, only 66,910 are now available for the 2026 Hajj due to underutilization in previous years,” she stated.

The decision was revealed during a meeting between NAHCON and state officials to deliberate on Hajj costing and other critical matters.

Commissioner of Operations, Prince Anofiu Elegushi, added that future allocations to states will be adjusted based on their performance and utilization during the 2025 exercise.

In his remarks, NAHCON Chairman, Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, urged collaboration among state officials to ensure a smooth Hajj operation in 2026 and emphasized the need for strict adherence to medical screening requirements, which Saudi authorities consider crucial.

NAHCON also disclosed that negotiations were underway to reduce some cost components, including cargo handling charges, to lessen the financial strain on intending pilgrims.

  • Dangote Refinery Suspends Petrol sales in Naira, Cites Dollar Crude Obligations.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced a temporary suspension of petroleum product sales in naira, saying the move is necessary to avoid a currency mismatch with its crude oil purchase obligations, which are currently denominated in U.S. dollars.

In a circular sent to customers on Friday, the company explained that while it has continued selling products in naira, the value of such sales has already exceeded the amount of naira-denominated crude it has received. To realign its operations, it said sales will now be restricted to dollars until it gets further crude supplies priced in the local currency from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).

The refinery, owned by billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote, stressed that the decision is a temporary adjustment. “As soon as we receive an allocation of naira-denominated crude cargoes from NNPC, we will promptly resume petroleum product sales in naira,” the company assured.

Dangote Refinery also dismissed online reports suggesting that the halt was linked to alleged ticketing fraud. It described such claims as “malicious falsehood,” insisting its systems remain robust and free of fraud issues.

Reaffirming its commitment to the Nigerian market, the company said: “We remain dedicated to serving the market efficiently and sustainably. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this period.”
