NDLEA Arrests Ex-Convict and Three Cargo Agents Over UK-Bound Cocaine at Lagos Airport
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested Nwobodo Chidiebere Basil, a notorious ex-convict, and three cargo agents—Jubrin Firdausi Hassana, Kuku Daniel Oluwasegun, and Igwe Chioma Jane—at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, for attempting to smuggle 75 parcels of cocaine (1.5 kg) to London. Basil, 37, had previously been convicted in May 2023 for trafficking 30.10 kg of methamphetamine and sentenced to five years imprisonment, which he commuted by paying a ₦7 million fine. Following a sting operation, he was apprehended at a relaxation centre in Ikeja. NDLEA highlighted that Basil’s return to drug trafficking underscores weaknesses in Nigeria’s sentencing and justice system. The suspects are in custody, and investigations are ongoing.
