Guinea’s media regulator, the Haute Autorité de la Communication (HAC), has suspended Africa24 TV from broadcasting in the country for covering the presidential election without proper accreditation. The suspension, effective immediately, also removes the channel from the Canal+ package, preventing access to viewers in Guinea. HAC stated that the action complies with national media and electoral laws. Africa24, a 24-hour French-language news network focused on African affairs, becomes the first international media outlet suspended by Guinea’s current authorities.

MTV to Shut Down Music Channels After Nearly Four Decades of Broadcasting.

MTV, the world’s first 24-hour music television network, is set to end its long-standing run of non-stop music broadcasting in the UK after nearly 40 years. The network will shut down five of its UK music channels MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live on December 31, according to reports

The decision marks a significant shift in viewing habits, as audiences now primarily watch music videos on YouTube and social media platforms instead of traditional TV. Paramount, MTV’s parent company, has not issued an official statement regarding the closures.

Launched in the US in 1981, MTV revolutionized music entertainment by airing pop videos introduced by “video jockeys” or VJs, who became stars in their own right. The channel delivered iconic moments such as the debut of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video, the 1985 Live Aid concert broadcast, and the creation of the MTV Video Music Awards.

MTV expanded to Europe in 1987, and the UK launched its own channel in 1997 with Three Lions by David Baddiel and Frank Skinner as its first video. The network helped launch the careers of several presenters, including Cat Deeley, Zane Lowe, and Emma Willis, and later moved into original reality programming with shows like Ex On The Beach and Teen Mom UK.

Reports suggest that Paramount will also shut down MTV music channels in other countries such as Australia, Poland, France, and Brazil, as part of a global cost-cutting plan aimed at saving around $500 million (£376 million).

Earlier this year, Paramount also closed its Television Studios division, which produced Jack Ryan and The Spiderwick Chronicles. In the UK, MTV’s original productions like Gonzo and Fresh Out UK were also cancelled.

Despite declining viewership, MTV’s UK music channels still drew modest audiences, with MTV Music reaching 1.3 million viewers and MTV 90s attracting 949,000 in July, according to Barb ratings.

MTV will continue to maintain its presence through social media platforms and Paramount’s streaming service, Paramount+.

Arise News anchor Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu has been killed during an armed robbery attack at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of Monday.

Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie among colleagues and friends, was 29 years old.

Born on December 26, 1995, she had distinguished herself as a talented news anchor, reporter, and producer, celebrated for her eloquence, professionalism, and dedication to impactful journalism.

Before venturing into broadcasting, Maduagwu trained as a lawyer — a background that gave her reporting and analysis exceptional depth and intellectual rigour.

In a statement confirming her death on Monday, the management of Arise News described the loss as a devastating blow to the organisation and the journalism community.

“It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of the Arise News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu,” the statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi read.

“Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident in her residence in Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police. Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.”

Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway.

ABC TV Network Suspends ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Indefinitely After Backlash Over Charlie Kirk Shooting Remarks.

ABC has announced the indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! following controversy over comments made by the host regarding the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The decision came after Nexstar Media Group, which owns 28 ABC affiliates, declared it would no longer air the program. Other affiliate groups also expressed concerns, raising the possibility of a wider revolt.

The backlash intensified when FCC Chair Brendan Carr warned ABC affiliates they could face regulatory consequences, including potential license revocation, for airing what he described as “news distortion.”

Kimmel’s original remarks, delivered during his Monday monologue, suggested that the suspect in Kirk’s killing was a MAGA supporter. Critics accused him of politicizing the tragedy, with Carr calling the comments “offensive and insensitive.”

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Kimmel had planned to address the controversy on Wednesday’s episode but was not intending to apologize, insisting his words were taken out of context.

Nexstar’s broadcasting president, Andrew Alford, defended the network’s move, saying:

“Mr. Kimmel’s comments about the death of Mr. Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse. Continuing to give him a platform is simply not in the public interest.”

The FG has confirmed the closure of 13,597,057 social media accounts over offensive content & violations of the Code of Practice 2024 across platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram & X.

The disclosure was made in the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report, submitted by major tech companies such as Google, Microsoft & TikTok. The code, jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) & the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) outlines measures to curb online harm.

According to the report, 58,909,112 offensive posts were taken down, while 754,629 complaints were registered by users. It also noted that 420,439 contents were removed but later re-uploaded following user appeals.

In a statement, NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications, Hajiya Hadiza Umar commended the platforms for complying with the code, stressing that the initiative is aimed at ensuring a safer & more responsible digital environment for Nigerians.

BBNaija Faces Legal Threat As Lawyer Petitions NBC, Demands Ban Or Regulation Within 30 Days.

Activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has petitioned the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), calling for an immediate ban or strict regulation of the ongoing Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality show.

He described the programme as ob+cene, indecent, and prof@ne, and gave the commission 30 days to act or face legal action. In the petition addressed to NBC’s Director General and titled “Urgent need to ban or regulate the content of the television programme described as ‘Big Brother Naija’ for ob+cene, indecent, and prof@ne content, pursuant to the NBC Act 1999,” Idam accused the show of airing real-time explicit and pornographic content freely on television and social media.

“The show is not only aired on national TV but its profane content is proudly shared on the verified social media handles of the host company, in total disregard for public morality,” he stated.

He questioned why NBC, which had previously banned or sanctioned music videos by Olamide, Phyno, Wizkid, and others for similar reasons, has remained silent about BBNaija’s content.

Although BBNaija is rated 18+, Idam said this rating is insufficient because the show’s content is still easily accessible to underage viewers and the general public, especially via social media. He argued that the programme contributes nothing of educational, artistic, scientific, or literary value and blamed it for undermining public decency and morality.

Idam urged the NBC to restrict the show to highly regulated channels reserved for adult audiences and to prohibit the distribution of expl+cit clips by the host company online. He stressed that Nigeria, already struggling with insecurity and other social vices, cannot afford the moral damage caused by such unregulated content.

“The NBC must act now to prevent further erosion of our societal values,” he warned, threatening legal action if no action is taken within 30 days.

SERAP Gives Niger Governor 48-Hour Ultimatum Over Badeggi FM Shutdown

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Niger State Governor Umaru Bago, demanding the reversal of his administration’s closure of Badeggi FM 90.1 in Minna.

Governor Bago had ordered the shutdown, licence revocation, and profiling of the station’s owner, accusing it of unethical broadcasting and incitement. SERAP described the move as unlawful and a threat to press freedom, urging the governor to reinstate the station’s licence and guarantee staff safety.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) also condemned the action, calling it an abuse of power and insisting that only the National Broadcasting Commission has the authority to revoke broadcast licences.

Naija News recalls that Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State had ordered the immediate shutdown of Badeggi FM Radio in Minna, the state capital.

This was communicated in statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, who disclosed that Bago gave the directive during the expanded Niger State All Progressives Congress (APC) Caucus meeting held at the Government House.

He stated that the Governor directed the State Commissioner of Police and Commissioner for Homeland Security, Brigadier General Bello Abdullahi Mohammed (RTD) to shut down the media outfit.

According to the statement, Bago directed that the licence of the station be confiscated and the owner be profiled.

But reacting in a statement on Saturday, Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Rabiu Ibrahim, said the Minister has called on stakeholders in the media industry to remain calm.

While noting that only the NBC can suspend a radio station’s licence, Idris welcomed the decision of the Niger State Government to formally report the perceived “unethical behavior” of Badegi FM to the NBC for resolution.

The statement read: “Ministry of Information and National Orientation has taken note of concerns raised by various stakeholders in the media industry regarding the recent directive by the Niger State Government to suspend the operations of Badegi FM, a radio station in Minna.

“According to reports, the Governor of Niger State, His Excellency Mohammed Umaru Bago, issued the directive during an expanded Niger State APC Caucus Meeting in Minna on August 1, which the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation attended. The Governor reportedly cited allegations of unethical broadcasting and incitement against the government

“While acknowledging the concerns raised, the Ministry notes that the suspension of broadcasting licenses falls within the purview of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), as stipulated by law. In light of this, the Ministry welcomes the decision of the Niger State Government to formally report the perceived “unethical behavior” of Badegi FM to the NBC for resolution.
