The lawmaker representing Abia South Senatorial District, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, has said it would be impossible for President Bola Tinubu to win re-election in the 2027 presidential election.

Abaribe claimed that President Tinubu did not genuinely win the 2023 presidential election, adding that the hardship currently being experienced by Nigerians has strengthened public resolve to prevent his return after 2027.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Abaribe dismissed claims that Tinubu has never lost an election.

“I do not think so. Everybody loses elections, and you will see when the time comes. He will lose in 2027 because I know what Nigerians are feeling outside,” the senator said.

According to him, widespread economic hardship and public dissatisfaction with governance will play a major role in shaping the outcome of the next general election.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said that contrary to popular belief, many lawmakers face financial hardship after leaving office.

Speaking during plenary on Wednesday, Akpabio addressed what he described as “misconceptions” about the financial status of legislators, noting that their sacrifices are often overlooked. His comments followed a motion moved by Senator Sunday Marshall Katung (Kaduna South) to honour the late Caleb Zagi, a former senator who d+ed on June 25 after a brief illness.

During the session, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) revealed that Zagi had reached out to former colleagues for financial assistance while battling illness, prompting them to make personal donations.

“I was very saddened when he came to us for help. He was seriously ill and needed contributions, which we made,” Abaribe said. “People assume legislators are wealthy, but once you leave this chamber, there are no benefits, and many struggle to even afford healthcare.”

Abaribe described Zagi as a humble and committed public servant who built bridges across religious and regional lines.

In his response, Akpabio praised Abaribe’s gesture and highlighted the reality of life after public service for many lawmakers.

“You made a profound point — that Nigerians believe huge sums are spent on the National Assembly, but once you’re out, even basic medical care becomes a challenge,” Akpabio said.

“This shows how wrong the public perception is. Many believe we come here to enrich ourselves, but the truth is, we make sacrifices for national development and often leave office with little to show.”

He concluded by urging the public to recognise the sacrifices of legislators who serve to improve the country, rather than judging them through the lens of misinformation.
