Eight Restaurant Workers Remanded for Alleged Attempted Murder of Lagos Enforcement Officers

Incident:

During a regulatory enforcement operation on Sinari Daranijo Street, officials from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) and the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) were attacked and injured by workers of Yakoyo Abula Joint.

The restaurant had previously been sealed by the government for regulatory violations.


Legal Action:

Eight workers were arrested and arraigned at Bolade Magistrate Court in Oshodi on charges of attempted murder.

Defendants: Ibiwunmi Oladunjoye (30, F), Sikiru Oyelami (45), Aja Daniel (29), Sanusi Abayomi (31), Timothy Emmanuel (22), Ajoke Adegoke (24, F), Sulaimon Akinbola (28), Ridwan Adeshina (30).

All pleaded not guilty and were remanded until January 28, 2026, pending advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

Lagos State Commissioner of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized that assaulting or obstructing government officials will face decisive legal action.

The restaurant supervisor was also arrested, and the premises remain sealed. Additional arrests may occur as investigations continue.

Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi says Nigeria’s political elite have deliberately undermined the country’s progress by treating public office as a private enterprise rather than a national duty.

Speaking at the 15th anniversary event of Enough is Enough Nigeria in Lagos, Sanusi said the political class routinely sidelined development opportunities because “public office is about themselves, their families, and people close to them, not about the country or the citizens”.

“We have done enough damage and maybe we need to stop. And I think this is the point Omobola is making about missed opportunities. Not just missed opportunities, I think sometimes deliberately missed opportunities,” he said.

“The reason we miss these opportunities is because we have people who think public office is about themselves, it’s about their families, it’s about people close to them, it’s not about the country. But public office is about the citizens.”

Sanusi urged young Nigerians to reject what he described as a dysfunctional system and commit to building a nation that reflects its actual promise. He said the country’s current political and social structure is one defined by “ethnic rivalries, religious conflicts, and competition for personal aggrandizement”, all of which, he warned, limit national advancement.

Insecurity: Kano gov gathers 4,444 Qur’an reciters for prayers against banditry

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has warned against politicising insecurity, stressing that the growing threat of banditry demands collective action from all citizens regardless of political affiliation.

The governor made the remarks on Saturday night during a special prayer session at the Government House, where 4,444 Qur’an memorizers (Huffaz) gathered to recite the Holy Qur’an and offer prayers for lasting peace in the state following recent attacks by armed bandits.

The event drew notable figures, including the 16th Fulani Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, top government officials, clerics and community leaders.

Governor Yusuf emphasised that insecurity affects everyone equally, urging Nigerians to unite in confronting the menace.

“Insecurity does not know politics or party affiliations. This is why everyone, regardless of their leanings, must join hands to fight the monster of banditry. We want to see everybody working together to free Kano,” he said.

According to him, the government is working round-the-clock with security operatives to protect Kano and its environs.

Describing the mass prayer session as a vital spiritual effort, the governor noted that such initiatives should be appreciated by all well-meaning residents.

The prayer session drew Islamic scholars, Qur’an reciters and participants from all 44 local government areas, all united in seeking divine intervention and an end to insecurity in the state.

Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially inaugurated the reconstituted Kano Council of Emirs, restoring the traditional structure with Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II serving as Chairman. The council also includes Emirs from Gaya, Karaye, and Rano.

This development was revealed in a statement by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Monday in Kano.

The inauguration follows the signing of the Kano Emirates Council Law (Repeal Bill) 2024, which dissolved the five emirate councils established under former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, returning Kano to its historic unified emirate structure.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Government House Coronation Hall, Governor Yusuf emphasized that reinstating the Council aims to strengthen peace, stability, and development across Kano State.

He described the traditional institution as “a pillar of history, guardian of values, custodian of heritage, and an indispensable partner in governance.”

Governor Yusuf added that the Council is expected to serve as a central platform where royal fathers can meet, deliberate, and provide meaningful guidance on issues affecting the people.

The Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, expressed confidence that the restored Council will significantly contribute to the state's development.

Earlier, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Chieftaincy Affairs, Prof. Tijjani Muhammad Naniya, traced the historical roots of the Kano Emirate, highlighting its over 700-year legacy of unity under one Emir.

Nigeria Has Pulled Back From Economic Collapse — Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II Hails the CBN Reforms.

Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Sanusi Muhammadu Sanusi, has praised the current leadership of the apex bank for what he described as a “remarkable turnaround” in Nigeria’s monetary and economic stability.

Speaking on recent economic developments, Sanusi said he had “nothing but positive words” for the CBN’s policies, noting that the institution had successfully stabilized the exchange rate and curbed the reckless monetary expansion that once threatened the economy.

“We came from a period of very high instability due to loose monetary policy and uncontrolled growth in money supply,” Sanusi stated. “In the last one year, the central bank has worked hard to mop up excess liquidity. Yes, interest rates are high, but the result is evident, we’ve stabilized the naira and pulled back from the brink of total economic collapse.”

The former governor highlighted key economic improvements, including declining inflation, which he noted had fallen to around 20 percent, and a steady rise in foreign reserves now exceeding $40 billion.

Sanusi also pointed out that Nigeria’s economy recorded growth of over 3 percent in the first quarter and more than 4 percent in the second quarter of the year, outpacing population growth for the first time in years.

He described these gains as evidence that the CBN’s policy tightening and reform efforts are beginning to yield tangible results, restoring investor confidence and setting the economy on a path toward long-term stability.

Petrol Subsidy Removal Rescued Nigeria From Bankruptcy – Emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi.

Muhammad Sanusi II, Emir of Kano and former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, says scrapping petrol subsidy saved Nigeria from imminent bankruptcy.

Speaking at the second edition of the Kano International Poetry Festival on Saturday, Sanusi described the subsidy system as wasteful and unsustainable, noting that it drained government finances through oil price fluctuations, exchange rate pressures, transport costs, and refining expenses.

“Subsidy meant if petrol was N100, Nigerians paid N70 and government covered N30,” he explained. “But government went further, fixing petrol at N65 per litre regardless of global oil prices. Who paid the difference? Government. And that was always going to bankrupt Nigeria.”

He faulted past governments for neglecting local refineries while spending billions on subsidies that enriched foreign refineries and cost Nigerians jobs. According to him, those funds should have been invested in production rather than consumption.

The emir recalled warning as CBN governor in 2012 that the policy was like “a man running towards a ditch.” He said Nigeria eventually began borrowing to pay subsidies and later to service debts, making the arrangement unsustainable.

Sanusi stressed that subsidy removal should be seen not just as an economic reform but also as a chance to rebuild a more resilient and self-reliant nation.

Canada Rejects Over 1,596 Nigerian Asylum Claims in 2025.

Canada has denied 1,596 asylum applications from Nigerians between January and August 2025, fresh data from the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) show. 

Out of 3,548 claims filed so far, 2,292 were accepted—an approval rate of about 65 per cent, higher than in previous years.

Nigeria remains one of the top sources of asylum seekers in Canada, alongside Mexico, India, Haiti and Colombia. Analysts link the surge to insecurity caused by Boko Haram and economic hardship. Most claimants are hosted in Ontario and Alberta.

Under Canadian law, the IRB grants protection if applicants meet the UN definition of refugees or face risks such as tort¥re or cruel treatment in their home countries. 

Social groups considered include women, LGBTQ+ individuals and people living with HIV/AIDS. Claims are usually filed at ports of entry or through immigration officers before referral to the Refugee Protection Division.

Despite the recent rise in approvals, Nigerian claims have historically faced high rejection rates. Between 2013 and 2024, the IRB denied 13,171 applications and accepted 10,580. Rejections peaked in 2019 with 3,951 cases. In 2024 alone, 811 were denied, while 2,230 were approved.

Nigeria ranked eighth among the top 10 countries with the most successful claims last year, following Turkiye, Mexico, Colombia, Iran, Pakistan, Haiti, and Afghanistan.

Speaking on the trend, Imaobong Ladipo-Sanusi, Executive Director of the Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation, said many Nigerians misunderstand refugee laws, leading to rejections. 

“Documentation is crucial. Coming irregularly gets you rejected. But migration must be safe, orderly and regular, and those truly in need of protection should be protected,” she said.

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has criticized Nigeria’s political leadership and societal focus, saying the country remains stuck in divisive debates on tribe and religion while the rest of the world addresses pressing global issues such as artificial intelligence and climate change.

Speaking on Saturday at the second Kano International Poetry Festival (KAPFEST), organized by the Poetic Wednesdays Initiative, Sanusi said Nigeria has suffered from “lousy leadership” for decades.

“You rise and fall with the quality of your leadership and Nigeria has had lousy leadership for a long time,” the emir said. “While other countries are discussing climate change and artificial intelligence, we are still talking about Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, North, South, Muslim, Christian — the same conversations we had in the 1960s.”

He urged Nigerian youths to take charge of the nation’s future, insisting they have the power to retire the current political class. Sanusi also warned that reckless borrowing and wasteful spending by government would have dire consequences for the country’s economy.

The festival, themed “Poetry in a Time of Crisis,” was aimed at encouraging poets and artists to use creativity as a tool for peace and advocacy in Northern Nigeria.

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has approved the appointment of Sanusi Mika’ilu Sami as the new Emir of Zuru.

His appointment follows the death of Emir Muhammad Sani Sami Gomo II, who passed away on August 16, 2025, in London.

According to the state’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Garba Dutsin-Mari, Sami emerged winner after securing the highest votes from the Zuru Emirate election committee screening three candidates.

A former aide to the late Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, Doyin Odebowale, has faulted the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, over his demand that the Ooni of Ife revoke a chieftaincy title conferred on Ibadan businessman Dotun Sanusi.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Odebowale said monarchs derive authority only within their local government areas and cannot override elected officials. He added that colonial chieftaincy laws had long reduced their powers.

Olafare added that the alleged Oluomo of Yorubaland title in contention “does not even exist,” insisting that those issuing threats were simply “jokers.”
