School Abductions Spike: Governors Mobilize for Coordinated Security Response”

The escalating kidnapping and banditry crisis in northern Nigeria has sparked urgent responses from local governments. In light of the recent surge in attacks, especially targeting educational institutions, the 19 Northern governors have called an emergency meeting scheduled for November 29, 2025, in Kaduna State. This move comes after the South-West governors convened in Ibadan to discuss similar concerns, notably calling for the establishment of state police to counteract the growing wave of violence in their region.

The rise in violence, including the deadly attack at the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi, where 24 schoolgirls were abducted and the vice principal was killed, has pushed northern states to take drastic measures. A series of kidnappings of students and teachers across multiple states, including a recent raid on St. Mary’s Catholic Schools in Niger State, has led to widespread school lockdowns in a bid to protect students and staff.

Peter Ahemba, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, confirmed the planned meeting and emphasized that the governors would be discussing practical strategies to tackle kidnapping, banditry, and other security threats. The meeting will likely focus on strengthening security measures and improving support for law enforcement agencies in the northern region.

Nasarawa State, where the Governor is also leading efforts to combat insecurity in the north-central zone, has been active in coordinating emergency responses. Governor Abdullahi Sule, who had to cut short his participation in the G20 summit in South Africa, convened an emergency security meeting on November 24 to address rising tensions. Ahemba assured that the government is taking a proactive stance, with heightened security measures in place.

The situation has highlighted the vulnerability of educational institutions to attacks by armed groups, prompting heightened vigilance and immediate action from regional leaders. The increasing frequency of such incidents has raised concerns about the safety of students and staff, contributing to the broader national security debate.
