Security Heightened In South-East As Court Set To Deliver Ruling In Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial

Security has been tightened across the South-East as the Federal High Court in Abuja delivers judgment today in the long-running terrorism trial of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in DSS custody since his alleged “extraordinary rendition” from Kenya in 2021.

Justice James Omotosho fixed the judgment for November 20 after ruling that Kanu failed to present his defence within the allotted time. Kanu has argued that the terrorism charges are invalid because the law under which he is being tried has been repealed, insisting the case should be struck out and that the proceedings are a nullity.

His legal journey has spanned years of delays and appeals. In 2022, the Court of Appeal discharged him over the illegality of his rendition, but the Supreme Court later reversed that decision, sending the case back to the trial court. His continued detention has drawn national and international pressure for his release.

Ahead of the judgment, police in Abia State say security has been strengthened to prevent unrest, noting that the state remains calm but fully monitored.

Kanu has also filed a fresh appeal seeking to halt today’s ruling and separately filed a criminal complaint accusing two DSS witnesses of giving false testimony during his trial.

As Nigerians await the court’s decision, tension remains high over a case viewed as one of the most politically sensitive in the country.
