EFCC: Edo Courts Sentence 34 Internet Fraudsters to Jail in Benin City

Between May 29 and June 4, 2025, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured the conviction of 34 internet fraudsters before Justices A.N. Erhabor and W.I. Aziegbemhin of the Edo State High Courts sitting in Benin City. The convicts were found guilty of various cybercrime-related offences including obtaining by false pretence, possession of fraudulent documents, and retention of criminal proceeds.
All 34 defendants pleaded guilty to their respective one-count charges after they were arraigned by the EFCC Benin Zonal Directorate. Prosecutors urged the court to convict and sentence the fraudsters accordingly, while defence counsels pleaded for leniency on the grounds of remorse.
- Justice A.N. Erhabor sentenced 26 defendants to 2 years imprisonment each or a fine of N200,000.
- Justice W.I. Aziegbemhin sentenced 8 others to the same terms: 2 years imprisonment or N200,000 fine each.
In addition to jail terms, all convicts forfeited their mobile phones, laptops, and funds traced to their bank accounts to the Federal Government of Nigeria. Each also signed a written undertaking to desist from cybercrime and exhibit good conduct going forward.
The convictions followed a sting operation by EFCC operatives based on actionable intelligence linking the fraudsters to online scams. They were apprehended, investigated, charged, and subsequently convicted.
