Military Dismisses Coup Claims, Reaffirms Loyalty To Democracy

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has refuted a recent report by an online publication suggesting that the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary celebrations was connected to an alleged attempted military coup.

According to the report, 16 military officers, from the ranks of Captain to Brigadier General, were purportedly detained by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) for allegedly holding secret meetings to plan a coup against the government.

However, in a statement released on Saturday in Abuja and signed by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) described the publication as false, malicious, and deliberately aimed at creating fear and distrust among Nigerians.

The DHQ clarified that the decision to cancel the Independence Anniversary parade was purely strategic — to enable President Bola Tinubu to attend an important bilateral engagement abroad, and to allow the military to maintain its operational focus in ongoing counterterrorism, anti-insurgency, and anti-banditry campaigns across the country.
