Elon Musk Accuses Trump of Lying Over Spending Bill, Hints at Epstein File Links as Public Feud Escalates

A political rift between tech mogul Elon Musk and U.S. President Donald Trump has erupted into a full-blown public feud, marked by sharp accusations and bombshell claims about government secrecy and political betrayal.

On Thursday, Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) to directly accuse Trump of lying about his involvement in a controversial spending bill. “False,” Musk posted. “This bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!”

The dramatic fallout comes after weeks of growing tension between the former allies. Musk, who recently resigned after just 129 days as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), has been openly critical of the bill, which passed the House last month and is awaiting Senate approval.

Musk has argued that the legislation would irresponsibly inflate the national debt and urged his followers to pressure lawmakers to reject it.

During a press conference on Thursday with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, President Trump defended the bill and expressed disappointment with Musk's stance. “I'm very disappointed because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody sitting here. All of a sudden he had a problem,” Trump said, suggesting Musk’s opposition may stem from provisions cutting electric vehicle subsidies—potentially affecting Musk’s Tesla business.

Musk pushed back, writing: “Keep the EV/solar incentive cuts in the bill, even though no oil & gas subsidies are touched (very unfair!!), but ditch the MOUNTAIN of DISGUSTING PORK in the bill.”

In a particularly pointed remark, Musk added, “Without me, Trump would have lost the election,” referring to his high-profile endorsement last year following an assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania. He followed up with: “Such ingratitude.”

But the most explosive claim came later in the day when Musk hinted that Trump’s name appears in classified documents related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein and his network of powerful associates.

“Time to drop the really big bomb: (Trump) is in the Epstein files,” Musk posted. “That is the real reason they have not been made public.”

“Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out,” he added, further intensifying the public fallout.

While the Trump administration has confirmed an ongoing review of tens of thousands of documents and videos connected to Epstein investigations, Musk’s claim—if substantiated—would send shockwaves through Washington.

Musk and Trump’s alliance appeared to peak last July when the billionaire publicly endorsed Trump and reportedly contributed $290 million to campaign efforts supporting his return to the White House.

Now, with accusations flying and trust broken, what began as a political partnership has morphed into one of the most volatile power struggles in modern American politics.
