INEC Clears 14 Associations To Advance In Political Party Registration Process
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 14 associations have scaled through the initial stage of screening and will move forward in the process of becoming registered political parties.
Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, disclosed this after a commission meeting on Thursday. He revealed that a total of 171 applications were received and assessed based on constitutional provisions, the Electoral Act 2022, and the commission’s regulations and guidelines.
“Out of the total number of applications received, 14 associations met the requirements to proceed to the next stage, while 157 did not,” Olumekun said, adding that the list has been published on INEC’s official platforms.
The cleared associations include:
-
African Transformation Party (ATP)
-
All Democratic Alliance (ADA)
-
Advance Nigeria Congress (ANC)
-
Abundance Social Party (ASP)
-
African Alliance Party (AAP)
-
Citizens Democratic Alliance (CDA)
-
Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA)
-
Grassroots Initiative Party (GRIP)
-
Green Future Party (GFP)
-
Liberation People’s Party (LPP)
-
National Democratic Party (NDP)
-
National Reform Party (NRP)
-
Patriotic Peoples Alliance (PPA)
-
Peoples Freedom Party (PFP)
INEC also invited the interim chairmen and secretaries of these associations to a briefing scheduled for Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at its Abuja headquarters.
According to the commission, the next step involves uploading required information to its portal and undergoing physical verification to confirm compliance. The final decision on their registration will depend on the outcome of this process.
INEC emphasized that political party registration is a continuous exercise and that it remains open to associations that meet the required legal framework.
Chairman Mahmood Yakubu noted in June that the commission had received over 100 letters of intent for party registration, stressing that all applications are being processed in line with the law. He urged interested groups to study the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022, available on the INEC website.
